Month: April 2014

Anime Mondays #58

I’m doing my recap a little earlier than usual this week as Sunday officially starts “wedding season,” and it’s bridal showers, bachelorette/bachelor parties and days where people proclaim their love through the end of July.  I’ve never purchased so much Tupperware in my life.  Anyway, along with the shows this week, I watched this Japanese movie called Last Quarter, which is a manga adaptation from my beloved Ai Yazawa that never was translated into English.  I don’t watch a lot of live action Japanese movies (unless they are based off an anime I like, hi, I watched BOTH Nana movies), but this one was really good.  It was shot beautifully.  The lighting, the costumes and the sets just blew me away.  The acting was pretty sub-par, but I wasn’t expecting any Oscar-caliber performances, but it was just so pretty.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Monster Rancher – Episodes 1-2 Monster Rancher Cover

So…Right Stuf was having a Discotek sale, and for some reason, I felt compelled to start collecting this series.  Yes, another Pokemon rip-off.  No, it’s not very good.  I never watched this when it was on tv (I am guessing it was, since it’s long and has an English dub…), and I have no emotional, nostalgic attachments to it, so I’ll just tell it like it is: this show is straight up bad and boring.  Some kid gets sucked into a video game.  He’s trying to fight some bad guy.  That’s about all I got out of it.  I’ll be honest, I put this in the player when I wanted to take a nap, and it did not disappoint, as I only stayed conscious for two episodes.  This is going to go immediately to the back burner.

Naruto – Episodes 107-114 Naruto cover

Shit. Just. Fucking. Got. Real.  This is not the first time I’ll say that this week (spoiler~).  Something happened in this group of episodes, where the characters all seem to have magically aged.  I don’t know how much time is supposed to have passed between the start of the series and the halfway point, but all of the ninja kids seem to be more mature now.  First of all, Sasuke has officially peaced out and left the Leaf Village.  He’s a dumbass for trying to get revenge rather than stay with his ninja group, but this aside, I have a rather shocking confession to make.  Are you ready?  I didn’t believe this happened myself.  I actually, straight up cried during an episode and felt empathy towards Sakura.  Yeah, you heard me.  Worthless Sakura.  If you’ve seen the show, I’m sure you know the episode.  If you haven’t, then, well…spoilers.  Sakura is bawling and confessing her love to Sasuke, begging him to stay with her or let her come with him.  My heart broke (this is also not the first time this happened this week).  I must be having some major girl moments or something because I felt her compassion so hard.  Dear God, I cried during a Naruto episode, what is wrong with me??  I guess I could finally relate to something in this series.  Especially since Sasuke pretty much blows her off.  AND THEN KNOCKS HER OUT.  Asshole.  In other news, Shikimaru is a BAMF and the Choji episodes…I can’t.  I am really hoping that those endings were not cut and dry.  God, please.  I’ll start bawling again.

Paradise Kiss – Episodes 5-12 (Completed!) Paradise Kiss cover

Speaking of bawling…Christ.  I sobbed at the end of every single episode of this series.  I think this is a new record for me.  And I loved (almost) every second.  However, let me tell you, that ending…I think I stared at the DVD menu for a good five minutes after it was over just thinking about how broken my heart was.  I want more of this.  😦  I know, there is no more, and the story really ended in a complete way, but, damn.  It’s not like Nana, where when the anime ends, I can just go read the manga (I haven’t yet, don’t tell me what happens), I’m pretty sure this is it.  And it was SO GOOD.  I haven’t felt this invested in a group of characters in a long, long time.  I liked every single one.  And Caroline and George…ugh.  My stomach dropped so many times for them.  If you are a fool for shoujo romance anime like I am, stop everything you are doing and track down Paradise Kiss.  I do not regret a single cent of the $72 I spent purchasing this.  Even if the dub sucked and I watched the whole thing subtitled.  I think this just made my top ten anime of all time list.  Why is Ai Yazawa so perfect?  I rated this 9/10 on MAL, the point taken off for the bits of ‘comedic’ styling and my broken heart.

Code Geass – Episodes 18-25 (Completed!) Code Geass Cover

Shit. Just. Fucking. Got. Real. Part 2.  Unfortunately, it took 21 episodes for shit to get real in Code Geass, and then it just hit the fucking fan.  Episode 22.  Oh my goodness.  I can’t even.  Like, the whole series just got thrown on its head in that one episode, and for the rest of it, I was HOOKED.  Like, I was watching it just to kill time while I was painting my nails after work, and then all of a sudden, I was foregoing sleep to watch it, IT WAS THAT GOOD.  But the cliffhanger ending…fuck you, anime, fuck you.  I did not want to watch season 2 of this.  In fact, until episode 22, I was just going to finish this first season and then let it go, never to have a Geass cross my anime list again.  But no.  Now I have to find out what happens.  This is worse than the goddamned Attack on Titan cliffhangers.  Jesus.  I rated this 5/10 on MAL because even if it got really great, I had to suffer through 21 episodes of crap to get there and that shit is unacceptable.

Little Busters – Episodes 1-2 Little Busters Cover

I honestly thought I had started watching this anime when I purchased it (the only reason I did was because I got it SUPER cheap for a Sentai blu-ray), but, as it turns out, I had tried, but had fallen asleep through the first episode.  Yeah…clearly, I only got through two of them.  I can’t tell you what, if anything, this show is about, other than it’s based on a Key visual novel, which I did not know.  But as soon as I started to get bored, I realized, it’s by the same people who made Clannad, and then it all made sense.  PS: if you don’t follow my post tags, ‘I hate Clannad‘ is one that’s used often.  The dub is atrocious.  Even my precious Brittany Karbowski can’t save this crap, and Greg Ayres is hideously miscast.  I fell asleep through the sub, so there’s that.  No, I don’t have narcolepsy like the main character does, but I guess that’s the selling point of this series, that some dude has narcolepsy and nobody liked him except this group of childhood friends.  Now they’re older and are going to be split up soon, hence a push to “make the most of their youth,” whatever that means.  Apparently, it’s something about baseball.  But this is not a sports anime.  Off to the pile of no return you go, Little Busters.  I’ll see you again when I am really, really bored.

Soul Eater Not! – Episode 3 Soul Eater Not Cover

I hate to admit that this show is starting to grow on me.  I actually really enjoyed this episode, and it didn’t have any cameos at all.  Maybe it was because it focused on one of the side characters and not the main ones, but it was cute.  Anya is starting to become likable.  I think I’m losing my marbles.  But the “witch” of the girls’ dorm is such a great character.  I hope they flesh her out even more.

Akuma no Riddle – Episode 4 Akuma no Riddle Cover

Yup, I still love this show.  For a yuri show, it’s not very yuri-focused, and I can dig that.  There’s no weirdo Strawberry Panic bathtub scenes…yet, anyway.  This episode focuses on the smart girl, who can draw diagrams and make bombs as well as fuck ups.  She doesn’t even want to be an assassin, but she doesn’t want to fail at it, either.  Shit, maybe she should have just gone into the armed forces or something and made weapons.  She could have avoided all of this mess.  Probably my least favorite episode so far, but it was by no means a bad one.  I can’t wait until the girl with the short red hair gets featured.  She had a little cameo in this episode, but I want to know the story.  Hurry up, Akuma no Riddle.  This is by far my favorite show of the season.

Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (Completed!) Naruto Movie 1 Cover

The best part about this movie was that I didn’t have to purchase it, and I could watch it dubbed for free on Amazon Prime.  Seriously…the best part.  If I would have spent money on this, I would have been sad.  Even my OCD completest nature is not going to force me into buying this piece of crap.  It’s a filler movie, another stupid ninja mission, but the animation looks a lot nicer.  However, once again, I’m forced to ask myself what the hell time period this anime is supposed to take place in because he’s a ninja but Naruto is going to the movies…I don’t get it.   I thought ninjas were ancient warriors.  Anyway, the plot is dumb, the main heroine is a complete bitch, and I was just glad when it was over.  Don’t waste your time on this unless your OCD is bugging you like mine was.  You must watch this after episode 101 of the anime, though, just throwing that out there, as I had to google when to watch the movies about five times because I kept forgetting.  I rated this 5/10 on MAL, and that’s being generous.

Here’s the count: currently watching 239 shows (sad that I picked up two crappy ones) and have completed 23 shows this year!  Nothing in my backlog is really jumping out at me to watch right now to tease you for next week.  All my anime rental dvds have been returned (sidenote: why is it taking so long to have them marked as received? :/ and no, this is not Netflix, but I’m used to a one week turnaround time, and this has been almost three for one of my discs…), I don’t feel like starting anything new…I did get Hellsing recommended to me to finish, and I’m almost halfway through it, so maybe I’ll knock it out.  Is this a burn out?  Is this “the void” left by Paradise Kiss???  My heart…it still breaks.

Anime Mondays #57

I just got back from a weekend out of town where I went to a legitimate bingo casino to play, and the lady I was playing with won $3000.  No joke.  3k.  That’s so much money.  I get excited when I win $20 at the casino, but three thousand dollars?  That’s insanity.  In other news, I have a new favorite place.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Naruto – Episodes 100-106 Naruto cover

Another box set of Naruto has been completed.  I have the rest of the series coming from amazon this week so I won’t have to buy any more, but then…then it’s time to work on Shippuden.  I’m kind of dreading it, not gonna lie.  I might have to take a really, really long break.  In this little block of episodes, we get some stupid ninja mission where the gang has to play bodyguards to some dude running a race, who I swear is voiced by the same actor as one of the original ninja turtles.  It was pretty worthless.  However, we get one little throwaway comedic episode where Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura spend the entire time trying to get Kekashi to take his mask off.  More of these, please!  Oh man, even though it was cheesy and played out as hell, I still enjoyed it…except for the ending.  I won’t ruin it entirely, but it’s safe to say no one will be pleased.

Paradise Kiss – Episodes 1-4 Paradise Kiss cover

I honestly could not tell you what took me so long to start Paradise Kiss, other than the fact that I couldn’t find it anywhere.  It’s by the creator of Nana, so, in theory, it should have been top priority for me, but I have never gotten around to watching it.  Well, it came in from my rental service, and when I had this major bout of insomnia, I watched the entire disc at 4am before I had to get up to get ready for work.  Oh. My. God.  I am obsessed.  It’s completely out of print, but I didn’t give a shit, as soon as I had put the thing back into its red envelope, I had to get on amazon and ebay and price check until I could buy the whole series.  It’s different from Nana, but it has a lot of similar themes.  It also is a spin off for a series I started a long time ago called Gokinjo Monogatari (Neighborhood Story) which I liked but had a hard time tracking down, as well.  As for ParaKiss, this girl is walking down the street when a dude with a lot of facial piercings literally stops her and makes her turn around.  When he sees her face, he tells her she needs to be a model for his clothes, and though, at first she isn’t having any of it, slowly her mood changes, and she becomes obsessed with the world of these fashion school kids behind a hot pink door.  I will say this about the series; the pacing is horrific.  It just moves so quickly, it doesn’t give you enough time to really enjoy anything.  I guess that’s the downfall of having a 12 episode series, as opposed to all the creator’s similar work which is 40+ episodes.  Also, the stupid “comedic animation” style is really distracting, along with just being terrible.  Nana had a bunch of it, and I could write it off because it was mostly Hachi barking, but this stuff just takes you out of the moment.  But Yukari and George…man.  They make my stomach drop.  Obviously, this is more romance than anything else, and it’s just fantastic.  I can’t wait for my dvds to come so I can marathon the shit out of this as soon as I can open the mailer.  Also, the ending theme is “Do You Want To” by Franz Ferdinand, and that makes me happier than almost any ending theme ever.  All Ai Yazawa anime adaptations have fantastic ending themes.  Love, love, love.

Akuma no Riddle – Episodes 1-3 Akuma no Riddle Cover

And here is another anime I have become completely obsessed with.  The stupid English title aside, Akuma no Riddle is so amazing, I just can’t even deal.  Once again, I picked this up on Hulu when an insomnia fit hit (stress: it’s really bad for you unless it forces you to stay awake and watch awesome anime), and stayed awake until I had devoured every single episode that has aired already.  Yes, it’s another survival game anime, but this time, it’s a bunch of girls who are all focused on assassinating one girl…well, at least until Tokaku jumps in and changes the game, aiming to protect this girl instead of kill her.  All the characters are a little tropey, yes, but they’re also all certifiably insane, so it makes them loads more interesting.  I can’t wait to delve into all the character backstories and get to learn what they want their prizes to be if they can chop the target girl, Haru, into pieces.  Tokaku is great.  She’s not sure why she’s drawn to Haru, and that confusion makes her human instead of just a killing machine.  I love this for so many reasons, but here are two random ones that really stick out.  #1: there is a different ending theme every episode, and y’all know how much I love my ending themes.  #2: the characters spend a whole three minutes talking about nail polish in an episode.  Oh yes.  This show is going to be great.

Soul Eater Not! – Episode 2 Soul Eater Not Cover

This show is really dumb, but I am going to keep watching it in hopes of another Death the Kid cameo.  No joke.  It’s extremely trope-y, there’s not much to it, and the setting is the best part of the anime.  Meh.  In this episode, we learn a little more about Anya who sells her family crest to buy a giant Tanuki statue and then all the girls get part time jobs.  …stupid.  I hope this gets better.  Apparently, there’s something special about all of them because they are being guarded by a couple of guys, but we know nothing yet.

Baby Steps – Episode 2 Baby Steps Cover

I’m really upset that I don’t like this anime.  Our main dude has realized he can take cell phone pictures and video to track his tennis form, so now he’s going to be obsessed with perfecting it because hitting the ball in perfect form was like some religious experience for him.  I just don’t give a shit about any of the characters, still.  I don’t care if they win or lose or if they ever hit the ball perfectly.  I’m over it.  I’ll finish it…but I’m over it.  This may be one of the sports shows that I have to marathon to enjoy, but we’ll see.

And that’s the end.  My backlog challenge has really taken a hit lately.  I’m currently watching 239 shows and I have completed 20 anime so far this year.  I’m all about taking a nap right now, though, instead of catching up on the stuff I missed over the weekend.  Sleep is trumping reverse harems.  I never thought I’d see the day.

Anime Mondays #56 (Spring 2014 First Impressions)

Can someone enlighten me on how this year’s weather works?  Seriously.  It’s like we get two gorgeous days in a row where I can wear shorts and no coat and then we go right back to snow.  Is this, like, an apocalypse lead up?  I am not amused.  It’s April, this should be the time where I get to wear capris until October.  Anyway, I know you did not come here for a weather report.  Here’s this week’s anime recap.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Baby Steps – Episode 1 Baby Steps Cover

I cheated on my backlog challenge so hard this week.  Once I started watching the new series, it was like I couldn’t stop myself.  And then, when I tried to finish a couple off so I could go back to my original number, my ADD kicked in hardcore and I could only get through a few episodes at a time.  Ugh.  But Baby Steps.  I don’t know about anyone else, but this anime reminded me a lot of Marmalade Boy.  I don’t know if it’s the weird, almost retro art style, or the fact that it’s about tennis, but has melodramatic undertones (as opposed to Marmalade Boy, which is a melodrama where the main character sometimes plays tennis…), but it went there.  Unfortunately, this was not a good thing.  I feel like I’m going to contradict myself many times this week, but I wasn’t buying the sports/slice of life drama Baby Steps has going on.  Maybe it’s because I connected absolutely 0% with the main character.  He studies really hard in school to get perfect grades, but for no real reason.  He doesn’t enjoy it, he just thinks he has to.  He has no life to speak of, other than that he copies his perfect notes for his classmates, and wants to pick up a sport so he can get some exercise.  Yeah.  He’s not passionate about anything at all.  I’m sure the point of this set up is to show how eventually he will become passionate about tennis, but the way the anime went about this was just overkill.  The female lead he’s paired with is pretty much devoid of personality also, other than that she loooooves tennis and wants to go pro.  I just wasn’t feeling the first episode, but since it looks like the first half of this series is going to be one big training montage, I won’t feel the need to marathon it and can watch it as it airs.  Bad for a sports series but good for my backlog challenge.

Princess Nine – Episodes 5-26 (Completed!) Princess Nine cover

Unlike Baby Steps, here we have a sports anime mixed with drama that I absolutely LOVED.  Princess Nine made my heart whole, broke it completely, and then put it back together again.  Oh man.  Once I started watching this anime, I just did not want to stop.  In fact, I didn’t watch anything else at all until I completed it earlier this week.  And once it came to the end, I was a sobbing hot mess.  God, I wish there was another season of this show.  I know it’s so old that it will never ever happen, and there isn’t even a manga I can read, but I fell in love with every single character so much that I just want more.  For a sports anime, the pacing is completely off, and, honestly, that’s the show’s biggest downfall.  We know in the very first episode that the girls will need three years to play at Koshien, which is the equivalent of the World Series for Japanese high school baseball, but by the time we get to where this is a legitimate possibility, it’s episode 25 already.  Yes, there are a lot of training episodes, but they did not take away from the overarching story of the show (except for the one with Ryo’s extended dream sequence…trust me, you’ll know what I mean when you get there) and I felt that the love triangle here was top notch.  A lot of the problems are all miscommunication based (as seems to be the norm in romance anime), but I bought it.  Oh, how I bought it, hook, line and sinker.  Please get past the terrible pacing and the in-game stock footage.  Just do me a favor and watch this show, if for no other reason than to hear Monica Rial perform a dub voice that doesn’t sound like a petulant, high-pitched whiny child for 80% of the show.  SHE IS GOOD, GUYS.  Except for the first five episodes, where the high hot mess comes out, but as the character develops, so does her voice, and man.  I am so in love with Princess Nine.  I rated it 9/10 on MAL, and if you like your sports anime with a high dose of drama and characters you give a shit about, I highly recommend it.

Naruto – Episodes 94-99 Naruto cover

Tsunare is a bad ass.  That pretty much sums up these few Naruto episodes, but it’s oh so true.  She not only takes down the bad guys, but she heals Sasuke and becomes the fifth hokage.  God, a character on Naruto I like who is not a bad guy and not a child.  I’m honestly shocked.  The filler (I’m just guessing this is filler because the story arc seems to be over…) episodes after the battle aren’t half bad, either, but since I have no idea what everyone is going to do now that Tsunare’s the fifth hokage, it means I have no idea what this is leading up to.  More Chunin exams?  I’m all about it.  I bet there will just be some lame ninja missions, though.

Soul Eater Not! – Episode 1 Soul Eater Not Cover

Yeah…this is not Soul Eater.  I’ll cop to squealing at the cameos by the original characters in the first episode, though.  Especially Death the Kid, my anime husband, flying by as someone looked out the window.  No shame.  But, they looked so…weird.  The art style has completely changed, so Maka didn’t look like Maka (she has moe eyes now, gross) and Soul was like…this ugly, mute shell of a person.  I didn’t even recognize Sid.  The only returning character who looked somewhat normal was Black Star, and his cameo was by far the best.  Other than that, Soul Eater Not! is about two girls who are going to fight over this weapon girl who has zero personality.  Actually, the two girls fighting over her don’t have much of those, either.  One is a bitch, and the other is dumb.  That’s about it.  Seriously.  It may end up being a cute show, but it’s not anything that I would have wanted out of a Soul Eater spin-off.  However…I do want to cosplay as the weapon girl.  Her outfit is the cutest school uniform I have seen in awhile.

Kamigami no Asobi – Episodes 1-2 Kamigami no Asobi Cover

Well, you know how I said I was looking for a reverse harem to fill the void left by the end of Brothers Conflict?  FOUND IT.  This anime has absolutely no shame in what it is.  This is like…the reverse harem to end all reverse harems, packed chock full of manservice.  I mean, in the first five minutes, we are treated to a magical girl transformation sequence for a male character.  Oh yeah.  It went there.  Like, you know how on the Americanized edit of Sailor Moon how they erased all the lines in the girls’ silhouettes?  None of that here.  Kamigami no Asobi is about Zeus bringing a bunch of gods from different mythologies together and dropping them in a fake school he creates with one human girl, saying they all need to learn about love and interactions with people.  So, pretty much this one girl is going to have to date every single one of them for the good of all man kind.  Um, sign me up.  She’s not as devoid of personality as most reverse harem girls, so I don’t hate her (yet), even if she did try to run away.  Why…why do these reverse harem girls never realize how awesome their lives are?  I don’t understand it.  Dumb characters are dumb.  This anime will have no plot and will more than likely also be dumb, but I am going to enjoy every moment of it.  True facts.

La Corda D’oro Blue Sky – Episodes 1-2 La Corda D'oro Blue Sky Cover

Oh, my precious La Corda, you are back with a vengeance.  How I have missed the halls of Seiso Academy with cute boys playing instruments everywhere with horrible animation and still frames to infer movement.  The first series was the shit.  It’s what made me excited for anime again when I realized that it was so much more than Sailor Moon and Unico.  I was like, reverse harem?  That’s a thing???  Oh, yes.  But this spin off…I’m not really feeling it.  Firstly, TOO MANY CHARACTERS.  Lord, in the first episode, I think we were introduced to ten of them, with barely any warning or development, and it all went by so quickly that I couldn’t even register the different hair colors.  Secondly, the premise is just…dumb.  In the first series, the main girl couldn’t play the violin at all until a music fairy helped her and gave her a magic violin that practically played itself.  That I could buy.  This time, it’s about this oddly dominant purple haired dude who practically kidnaps his two friends and forces them to enroll in Seiso without any pretense whatsoever.  I mean, their luggage is magically waiting for them at the dorms.  They didn’t have to apply?  Audition?  What about the parents?  How does this even happen?  Stupid.  Thirdly, the best characters are going to be the ones that go to different schools, and we will barely get to see them, I can tell already.  I’m sad.  I miss my trumpet playing anime boyfriend Hihara.  Plus, I want to punch the lead girl in the face.  Win some, lose some.

Love Live! School Idol Project – Episodes 4-5 Love Live! School Idol Project Cover

Once I started all these new shows, I tried really hard to finish some old ones.  Unfortunately, I started with Love Live, so that didn’t end well.  I had to switch to Hulu Plus to watch after episode 5, and for some reason, it didn’t have subtitles?  So there went that.  Man, this show is boring.  You’d think I’d like it since it’s about a girl group and music, but…no.  It’s more first season K-On! than anything worth watching.  The characters aren’t cute (minus the red haired girl), there’s no real plot to speak of, and, though I like the fact that they aren’t succeeding right away, but how long is it going to take for them to at least form the whole group??  I know there’s nine of them, I’ve seen the intro, but we just haven’t gotten that far yet.  In fact, it’s taken me five episodes to even distinguish between the characters to tell them apart in the intro.  Another show where I hope it gets better.  It’s not going to, is it?  I’m trying.

Persona 4: The Animation – Episodes 8-12 Persona 4 Cover

Okay, so I like Rise…but I still don’t like this show.  The episodes without all the fighting and without the Midnight Channel, are still the best episodes, and for an anime that’s really supposed to be about the fighting and this alternate world, that’s really bad.  Also, I can’t find the rest of this series dubbed to rent anywhere, so now I don’t know when I’ll get to finish it.  Is the game a whole lot better?  That’s the only thing I can think of, that people who love the game really love this anime, because I’m not buying why a lot of people think it’s so great.  Someone help me.  Anybody.  Bueller?

School Rumble Season 2 – Episodes 15-17 School Rumble Season 2 Cover

So, I found this show randomly in a box of anime I need to watch because after I sent back that Persona 4 disc, I needed to look at something I actually liked.  I watched the first season years and years ago, along with the OVA and half of the second, but then I just put it aside for some reason.  Let me tell you, when I put it back in the player, I immediately picked the storyline back up and remembered every single character and what they were about and how much I liked them.  This is a difficult feat, especially for a comedic anime, and a testament to how good School Rumble is.  Sure, it has its faults, like the dub is terrible (so that’s really just a Funimation fault, whoops) and you have to really pay attention because the dialogue is so rapidly paced, but it’s a good, solid comedy.  These episodes were especially good because they all involved Harima staying at Tenma’s house and then being kicked out and having to go on this adventure with Sawachika…ugh SO GOOD.  I felt so terrible for Harima because Tenma is just so clueless and he looooves her, but I could not stop laughing.  Man, I hope he gets his head out of his ass and picks a different girl because they are all so much more deserving than Tenma.  It’s hard to watch more than a few episodes in one sitting, but this show is worth it.

Supernatural: The Animation – Episodes 17-19 Supernatural the Animation Cover

Watching the Supernatural anime just made me want to watch the Supernatural tv show, which I am a huge fan of…even though I haven’t gotten past season 4 yet.  No spoilers!  It’s a good companion piece to the tv show because it has animated episodes from the show, along with anime only episodes, so it doesn’t get boring.  Also, the anime does things that the actual show would never have the budget for, like a giant robot demon made out of junkyard cars.  Oh yes.  Plus, each episode is introduced by Jared Padalecki or Jensen Ackles, so that’s worth your money right there.  And, Jared does the dub voice.  (If you didn’t know, I think he is one of the most attractive men on the history of the planet, so enjoyment level is up to rooftops here.)  Still, it’s hard to marathon this because continuity is a big issue.  Also, the art style isn’t my favorite.  But, I mean…it’s Supernatural.  That’s enough.

And that’s enough for this post.  I am currently watching 237 anime (god, fuck you spring season 😦 ) and have completed 20 shows this year.  There may or may not be a post next week, as I’m going out of town, but if not, just look for a double in two.  I also want to pick up at least a couple more spring shows…I know.  I shouldn’t.  But they’re so shiny and new…lord help me in the summer.  Oh!  And I got my Crunchyroll mystery manga box in the mail.  All Tokyo Pop titles, and most I have never heard of, but I’ll take some pictures and get something up on it before I leave for next weekend.  See you then!

Anime Mondays #55

I was about to start this huge rant about not being able to find the new season of La Corda D’oro online anywhere (because I thought I had been keeping up with the simulcast announcements), and it turns out that I haven’t at all because Crunchyroll has it.  Whoops.  Jumping the gun: one of my strong points.  In actuality, I had to go on the Crunchyroll site for a different reason, though…which you can find at the bottom of this post.  You know the drill.

Hanasakero Seishounen – Episodes 5-19 Hanasakeru Seishounen cover

Last week, I told you how this anime wasn’t what I was looking to watch, but I started it up anyway.  Then I watched 15 episodes, so clearly it was doing something right.  This is a reverse harem, but it’s not.  It’s like…a reverse harem with a plot.  In fact, it’s plot-driven.  I know, sacrilege.  The more I watched of the show, the more I forgot about the romance aspect of it, and, while that’s neither good nor bad, Hanasakero is solid.  Every episode gets more and more fucked up (not Penguindrum fucked up, but still, in a good way), and it’s like I’m watching some kind of prime time soap opera instead of an anime.  First off, guy with the headband is actually a prince of this made up country, and he’s pretty much the most important character, as almost everything in this block of episodes has revolved around a political plot involving said made up country.  It’s really complicated and would take way too long to explain (along with ruining some of the best spoilers in the show), but just be warned that Brothers Conflict this is not.  I’m a big fan of the fact that the main girl actually acts her age (15) sometimes, especially during the romance parts where she admits to not knowing what love is, and keeps her head, even though boys are throwing themselves at her.  It’s completely refreshing that she’s not a submissive protagonist, to say the least.  And all of the guys have distinct personalities that aren’t just outlined by the fact that they are each falling for this girl in their own ways.  I’m not even going to classify this as a reverse harem anymore, I’m just going to enjoy the plot twists to the fullest.  And I still think she’s going to pick Lee-Leng.  We’ll see.

Princess Nine – Episodes 1-4 Princess Nine cover

Do not judge me for starting a new show.  Right Stuf shipped my set early, so I had to.  Princess Nine is not only a sports anime, but it’s old, so it would have to screw up really badly for me not to like it.  Let me tell you, so far, it does not disappoint.  It does show its age animation-wise, but I won’t fault it too much because Right Stuf did a great job on this release.  There are only four episodes on each disc, and the first one had a handful of extras.  The transfer is about as good as it’s going to get, and the (old) English dub didn’t immediately force me to turn on the subtitles, so +++ all around.  Princess Nine is about a girl named Ryo who likes to play baseball.  Her dad (unbeknownst to her) was apparently a high school baseball champion, but when he died, he left her and her mom to run this restaurant, and Ryo is such a good daughter that once she graduates junior high, she’s not even going to go to high school, but help her mom out with the restaurant instead.  Luckily, her mom tells her about her dad and encourages Ryo to follow her dreams when she gets a chance to be interviewed for a full scholarship to attend one of the most prestigious high schools — as long as she plays on the baseball team — and bam, Princess Nine is born.  Actually, there’s a lot more going on here, as this is an all girls high school, and the headmistress wants to make the one and only all girls baseball team in Japan.  Hell, her main goal is to see Ryo play in the Japanese high school baseball finals just like her dad.  But, she gets no backing from the school board, can’t find nine players to start the team…it’s just a mess.  However, it’s also a really great piece on gender roles.  It’s an intelligent sports anime.  I know.  Impossible.  They haven’t made the full team yet, but I think my favorite girl is Seira…this should come as no surprise.  I can’t wait to watch more.  In fact, I think I will as soon as I complete this post.

Naruto – Episodes 90-93 Naruto cover

So, it turns out Tsunare isn’t a traitor, after all!  Hooray!  Just as I started to lose all hope in the Naruto characters, I re-gained a little.  The Pervy Sage actually told her that she had been chosen to be the fifth Hokage (which she turned down), and then this all out battle between her, Orochimaru (spelled correctly this week!) and that kid with the glasses from the Sound Village (who really cares what his name is) begins.  That Sound Village kid is a real dick.  I don’t know what his motivations are, but I want to punch him in the face, anyway.  I purchased the next set of this, so I think I only have one or two left to go.  Almost halfway done.  And then Shippuden.  I hope I can make it.

And that’s it.  I am currently watching 234 anime (I added one), with 19 completed shows this year.  There wasn’t a whole lot happening this week, but I did get sucked into the defunct CW show Cult that got added to Netflix.  Yeah…didn’t know it was prematurely cancelled.  Therefore, the ending…UGH.  Can’t I get a creator interview to wrap some shit up?  Please?  Please???  Anyway, here’s a free Crunchyroll guest pass:

I plan to start on the spring season next week with the two (possibly three) shows I’ll be watching, but hopefully I can clear a couple off my backlog before that happens.  There just aren’t enough hours in the day, friends.
