2013 Anime Wrap Up and 2014 Backlog Goal

Happy new year!  What are you looking forward to in 2014?  Personally, I’ve got another Disney vacation in the planning stages and a move.  Ooh, scary.  Also, I want to spend as much time with my baby nieces as possible…unfortunately, they live in a different time zone, but I’ll figure something out.  I’ve got my anime backlog project to keep me busy, and here is the starting number:

animelistThat’s right.  240 anime currently being watched.  (It would have been 241, but I finished something this morning.  Whoops.)  I will not go over this number.  I’d like to cut it down to 200 by the end of the year, but I have no idea if that’s even possible.

As for 2013, I finished more than I thought.  After a few calculations (aka: I scrolled through all my Anime Mondays post and counted off all the shows I marked as completed), I figured out my magic number of shows I finished: 32.  Of course, that includes 7 short OVA series and movies, but that’s still pretty good.  As you can see, I never finish anything.  I have to beat last year by 8 titles to hit my goal, and I’m pretty sure I only have a couple OVA series in my list, which means I have to watch entire series.  The countdown is on.

Speaking of countdowns, here is a list of my favorite anime of 2013.  Please keep in mind that these may not have been made in 2013, but they are ones I finished.  Feat in itself.  How about…seven of them.  Does that sound good?  Anything to put in a Nana reference.

7.  Btooom! Btooom! Cover

I almost put Diabolik Lovers here, but I cared about this show so much that I made an actual review on it, so Btooom! wins.  My love for the survival game premise knows no bounds, and even with an unfinished ending, this deserved a place on my top list.  Sure, it was OVER said top on multiple occasions, but where else can you watch a bunch of people chuck bombs at each other and get a love story out of it?  …Don’t say Future Diary.  That got left off the list for its shitty ending.  I guess unfinished trumps shitty.

6.  Danganronpa: The Animation Danganronpa Cover

What did I tell you?  It’s like survival game-a-palooza up in here.  I watched this show weekly, and it was the only one of the season where I screamed at my tv wanting more immediately.  I really hope the game sequel gets an anime because I need more Junko in my life ASAP.  Also, this has one of the best ending sequences I’ve seen in a long time.  It was decidedly simple, but I loved that moment when the camera panned out and you got to see who had gotten killed and what they were like before the shit hit the fan.  And the song…THE SONG.  I loved it.

5.  Say ‘I Love You’ Say 'I love you' Cover

It was between this or My Little Monster to put in the #5 spot, and although they are both pretty similar, Say ‘I Love You’ made the cut.  I loved the premise of this show, and it reminded me of one of my favorites, Kimi ni Tokdoke, but with a less annoying female protagonist.  And I love Yamato.  I have no shame.  He has absolutely everything, but he loves Mei, and that’s all that matters.  It did start to fall apart some towards the end, but if you like the shoujo romance shows, you should not skip this one.

4.  Lovely Complex Lovely Complex Cover

Speaking of shoujo romances…ugh.  I LOVE Lovely Complex.  It’s right up there with Nana as one of my favorites of all time.  I’ve said it before, but Risa is pretty much me in anime form.  So if anyone wants a really tall girl who doesn’t give up, please, take my number.  I don’t have a thing for bunnies, though.  Anyway, this show made me cry more times than I am willing to admit, so you know it’s got to be a lot.  It also has one of the best anime kisses ever and it gives me the feels.  You know.  Lord.  All the underground hype for this show is completely worth it.

3.  Interstella 555 Interstella 5555 Cover

Yup, this is a movie, but what a fantastic movie.  Firstly, it’s entirely scored in Daft Punk music.  Secondly, it takes place mostly in space, and I DON’T HATE IT.  And, lastly, it’s about a band, which I always love.  If you watch one anime movie in the next few months, this should be it.  Find it while you can, because, sadly, it’s going out of print.  I could watch this every week and not get bored.  My love for Interstella knows no bounds.

2.  Soul Eater Soul Eater Title

This was the longest series I completed in 2013, and it only got finished because it was SO GOOD.  I could not stop watching this.  Death the Kid has one of my favorite character designs of any anime ever, and even if the ending is kind of bogus, I still loved this show.  And there is a spin-off coming!  Here’s to hoping it has a few cameos from the original cast.  And I think I’m the only person who didn’t think Black Star was annoying.  I should get a medal.

1.  Mawaru Penguindrum Penguindrum Cover

Best show of my 2013 hands down.  No contest.  Penguindrum had absolutely everything I could have ever asked for in an anime wrapped up into two awesome box sets.  It’s got the sense of fucked up that I like, has beautiful characters, a psychological storyline, and PENGUINS.  YEAH, PENGUINS.  Seriously, though, it won’t be for a lot of people, but it was my most favorite thing.  I encourage everyone to watch this, but only if you’re prepared to get your mind fucked for hours upon hours.  If that’s your cup of tea, you won’t be sorry.

And I have definitely posted way too often this week.  I’ll be back on Monday with my first completed show of the year.  Spoiler: it wasn’t a very good one.

Anime Mondays #41

So, you know how I’ve been talking about making the transition to youtube?  I pretty much have the whole theming planned out, along with a filming location…I just need to learn how to use iMovie.  This is going to be interesting.  Look for a 2014 debut.  In other news, this “Timber” song by Ke$ha is really distracting and stupid.  Spotify, you are failing.

All images below are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Diabolik Lovers – Episodes 11-12 (Completed!) Diabolik Lovers Cover

And so it ends.  And it tries to have a plot.  I cry, the end.  Seriously…I know why boys watch all the fanservice shows I hate.  And when they try to have plots, they just fail even harder.  Such is the case with Diabolik Lovers, that ends on a low note that makes absolutely no sense.  I can’t even attempt to explain the ending, but this is what I got out of it:  Yui stabs herself because she’s a moron, the old lady vamp tries to awaken her anyway, the purple haired smart guy makes a potion to flush the old lady out of her, Ayato makes out with Yui’s almost corpse in order to give her the potion, she wakes up and she’s thirsty.  Thirsty for…what?  Blood?  Water?  Then the credits roll, I get confused and almost throw my Roku remote at the TV, and afterwards we are treated to a coda that is more than likely recycled game footage of all the vampires coming on to Yui.  Sadly, that was the best part of the episode.  It was cheesy as all hell, but I mean, I didn’t watch this show for its plot, I watched it to see what kind of ridiculous things would come out of the characters’ mouths.  I will still be the only person who liked this anime, like, ever, and my cosplay is being made right now by someone overseas.  You can go ahead and judge me, but who’ll be the one picked up a reverse harem at the con?  This girl.  I ranked Diabolik Lovers 7/10 on MAL, taking one point off for the shitty ending.  I don’t know why anyone expected this to be anything other than a show that panders to fangirls, which it did exceptionally well up until the end.  So trash it all you want, but it did its job.

Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters – Episodes 17-24 Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters Cover

This block of episodes can be summed up in the following sentence: oh my god, Yugi loses a match.  I know.  I was shocked, too.  Seeing as this is the protagonist who can do no wrong, homeboy straight up loses his match to Kiba.  However, this doesn’t come without a twist.  Yugi could have smoked him, but in doing so, he may have pushed Kiba off a wall or something, so he refused to attack and let him win.  Seriously??  I mean, it’s a goddamned card game.  Even with holograms and stuff, if you’re taking this crap so seriously that you’re willing to commit suicide if you lose…Jesus Christ.  I know, I know, Kiba was trying to save his brother who Pegasus kidnapped, but come the fuck on.  I want Yugi or someone in his group to really lose, not just throw it away.  It’s not that I dislike the characters, it just gets so boring when you know the good guys will always win.

Naruto – Episodes 44-52 Naruto cover

Thank god, the Chunin exam preliminaries are over.  OVER.  I mean, the exam as a whole is still going on, but at least we’ll get to see them do something slightly different for awhile.  Predictably, Naruto won his match.  Rock Lee got slaughtered by the sand guy (though he put up enough of a fight to make his match last three episodes, fuck), and the quiet girl who has a crush on Naruto got a beat down from her cousin.  In the real exam, the sand guy is going to go up against Sasuke (who is still currently in a goddamned coma), and that is going to be the shit.  I think sand guy is my favorite character.  I mean, not favorite enough that I can remember his name, but, you know.  He just doesn’t give a fuck about anything but slaughtering people AND HE CAN’T BE TAMED.  Love it.  Of course, I ran out of episodes, so I had to buy another box set off Right Stuf, and it’s coming with my Christmas order where one thing is out of stock, so who knows when I’ll get it.  It’s an amazing thing that’s out of stock, though, so I’ll wait.  No worries.

Accel World – Episodes 1-6 (Re-watch) Accel World Cover

When I was lucky enough to score one of the best deals I have ever come across at Right Stuf (spoiler! I’ll talk about it in a minute), I had to pad out my cart, so I ordered the first volume of the Accel World blu-ray.  I love this show.  I watched it while it was airing on Hulu, and every  Saturday morning, I would get up and turn it on.  I would not miss it for the life of me.  It was a no brainer that I was going to buy it, but I was going to wait until a Viz sale…whatever, I picked it up and got the “art book,” which was not worth it because the quality is crap.  Sadly, the quality of this blu-ray is crap, as well.  The dub is terrible.  I don’t know what it is about Viz doing this horrific dubs, but, oh my god.  The Vampire Knight dub was an atrocity, and this dub…ugh.  I hate it so much.  It’s like the actors are just reading lines off a piece of paper.  Secondly, I think the video quality was better off the internet, and I was watching it on a big screen tv in HD, so that’s something.  The show is still awesome, though.  I liked it better than Sword Art Online, and I adore that show to pieces, so that’s telling you something.  It doesn’t get really good until the back half, though.  Another thing Viz sucks at?  Making people wait for the next installments.

Gun x Sword – Episodes 1-4 Gun x Sword Cover

Ah, yes, another title I got out of a Crunchyroll mystery box that I have every disc from…except volume 2.  Will I ever finish this?  Probably not until a blind box buy throws the next volume in my direction.  That aside, this is not a very good show, and not at all up my alley.  You’d think, guns and swords, so it should be okay, right?  Wrong.  Turns out, the main dude with an American name fights with “armor…” which is code for “inside a giant robot.”  I fucking hate robots.  After I figured that out, it lost all its appeal for me.  On a side note, I have so many doubles of a few volumes of this.  Does anybody want them?  Please take them off my hands, otherwise, I have about 40 dvds I need to sell back to Amazon for a quarter apiece.

Stellvia – Episodes 1-4 Stellvia Cover

Another blind box pick, but one where I only have this volume.  I’m slightly saddened by that, because even though this show takes place in space (the only thing I hate more than anime about robots is anime about space), it’s pretty good.  I guess it’s more a school show than a space show, at least so far, as the main girl goes off to space boarding school, and is learning to become a pilot, or an engineer, or something.  Really, this was on in the background while I re-did my anime shelves, so I wasn’t paying close attention.  But I did put my entire Tenchi Muyo! collection in one spot!  And I’m only missing the space spin-offs which I refuse to buy.  Maybe I’ll check out the rest of Stellvia, though.  Netflix has got to have it collecting dust somewhere.

Code Geass – Episodes 3-5 Code Geass Cover

I probably should have paid more attention to this, but I got to the point where I just wanted to send the disc back, so I put it on while I was cleaning.  Consequently, I have no idea what’s happening now except Lelouch saw some girl in the shower and one came to visit him who’s a princess…I don’t know.  All the robots turned me off.  I have disc 2 that I need to send back, as well, so I’ll try to pay more attention to that one.  You know, I’m attempting to watch anime series that people think are “classic,” age not defining, but most of them are robot shows.  Doesn’t anyone have a classic shoujo or a classic romance or even a classic horror?  Man, I hate robots.

Tenchi Muyo OVA – Episode 8 Tenchi Muyo! Cover

I love the theme song to the second half of the OVA series.  Man, I had completely forgotten about it, but as soon as I popped my blu-ray in, the pioneer song just attacked my ears, and I remembered how I spent days trying to memorize it.  Ugh, I love it.  Anyway, other than the theme song, I was not a huge fan of the back half of this series.  My VHS collection attests that I purchased them, but I didn’t watch them nearly as much as I watched 1-6.  Wanna know why?  Filler-palooza, even when I didn’t know what filler was.  Case in point: this episode is all about Tenchi and his harem taking care of a baby.  Yes, a whole episode dedicated to infant care.  And while it’s cute, it’s nothing to write home about.  I can’t remember if any of the episodes after it have plot or not, but I’ll find out.  I’m making my way through the whole collection, including the Pretty Sammy spin-off which I forgot that I had.

Cowboy Bebop – Episodes 6-10 Cowboy Bebop Cover

I have been looking and looking to try to buy this series for a price that’s not hundreds of dollars, when lo and behold, someone tweeted that Right Stuf had a bunch of Bandai titles back in stock…and this was one of them.  So I picked up all of the Remix edition for $5 apiece.  MY LIFE, IT JUST GOT GREAT.  Well, except for volume 2.  But, wouldn’t you know it, I had volume 2 just sitting at my house from Netflix, and I can buy it on Amazon, so merry Christmas to me.  Unfortunately, these episodes were not as good as 3-5.  I was waiting for the epic to kick in, and it just didn’t.  I won’t give up, though.  Something awesome has got to happen before the series ends.  I have faith.  And now I own it, so I can watch it whenever I want to instead of forcing myself to watch this DVD I’ve had from Netflix since June just so I can get a new one…in case you were wondering, it’s the third live action Death Note movie, and it’s full of subtitles and I can’t make it past the first five minutes without forcing myself…but I will.

One Piece – Episodes 71-73 One Piece Cover

It’s Christmastime, so instead of watching Frosty the Snowman specials, I watch a lot of One Piece.  I know.  I’m weird.  But I have 8 collections of it to get through, and I am only on #3…which I think I was on LAST Christmas.  Oy.  These episodes have dinosaurs in them (spoiler, I love dinosaurs), which makes them semi-interesting, but they also have strange giant fights, which cancels the interesting out.  Also, they say Baroque Works a lot, which is an awesome name.  Other than that, not much is happening.  People getting kidnapped.  Vivi is still there.  The giant duck got beat up.  That giant duck is like the best character ever.  I want one.

And we’re done.  What do you think of the holiday layout?  I can’t see the post tags, but it’ll get changed in 2014.  I still can’t find a WordPress layout I’m in love with, but at least they’re better than blogger.  See you next week!

Anime Mondays #40

Does anyone have any weird holiday anime traditions?  I know this is an odd question, but I’m curious.  I mean, you could drag out your dusty, bargain bin copy of My Santa.  I won’t judge you.  You know what I’ve been doing the past couple years?  Staying up until 3am on Christmas Eve wrapping presents and watching One Piece.  It has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas, but that’s how I get shit done.  Pirates and bow tying.  Feel free to tell me how awesome I am.  I do accept comments, and unless they are spam, they won’t get deleted, I promise.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Naruto – Episodes 38-43 Naruto cover

Boy, you know what I really wanted after that giant chunk of episodes that proved Sakura’s uselessness?  MORE SAKURA EPISODES.  God, just shoot me in the eye.  These weed-out-the-crap Chunin exam episodes are still happening (and I when I googled how to spell Chunin, I just found out this arc goes into episode 60+!  oh, god, and this isn’t even filler…) and apparently, they are going to show us every single stupid battle.  The group of episodes I watched this week didn’t have anything terribly epic except for the great bitch battle of the century, Sakura vs Ino, where I hoped and prayed that Ino would win the entire time, but knew in my head that that probably wouldn’t be the case.  I mean, come on, Naruto’s team obviously has to win every match they have, right?  Right??  Fortunately, I was incorrect in my prediction.  Sakura doesn’t lose, but she doesn’t win, either.  I’ll take the tie.  Still proves Sakura does not belong in the ninja club.  Let’s kick her out of the tree house.

Lupin the 3rd: Part II – Episodes 1-5 Lupin the 3rd Part II Cover

In the last Crunchyroll Anime Mystery Box I received, I was lucky enough to grab the first three volumes of this show.  Now, you should know how my OCD works by now; I am very leery to start an anime sequel without watching the first series first.  Like…it gives me the shivers.  But, I really didn’t feel like dropping thirty bucks on the first show right now, and this was the highlight of my mystery box, so I popped that sucker in.  First, a word of warning: episode 3 is not on the first volume.  It’s about Nazis and stuff, so it got pushed back to a way later disc.  Luckily, this is on Hulu, so as soon as I was done with episode 2, I went over there to see the “banned” episode.  Lupin the 3rd (III?  Third? It’s different everywhere.) is about a group of thieves who go around making plans to steal stuff.  However, in the end, they pretty much get nothing.  It’s very Cowboy Bebop.  I actually dig this show a lot, but if you don’t like that “older” anime art style, you probably won’t.  I thought it would be more like a kid’s show than it actually is…yeah, no.  There are half-naked ladies and sex jokes everywhere, but instead of it being stupid fanservice, it’s funny.  Gasp.  What a concept!  I liked this so much that I immediately turned on…

Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine – Episodes 1-4 Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine Cover

Thank you, Funimation Channel for allowing me to watch this dub the moment I switched over to another series.  Also, thank you Funimation in general for casting Michelle Ruff as Fujiko Mine, the same voice actress who played her in the Part II dub.  While she doesn’t sound exactly the same as she did ten years ago, it was such a great performance that I wasn’t thrown too much out of the world.  Fujiko Mine is a prequel to the Lupin series (or at least Part II, as I haven’t seen the first one), but it’s so much darker than the old show.  I mean…seriously.  It’s no Higurashi or anything, but it’s not a giant, comedic romp that Lupin the 3rd: Part II is.  The opening is so not safe for work that it’s not even funny, and don’t despair, Fujiko gets naked in every episode so far.  But the art style is fantastic.  It’s a throwback, but it’s not.  It uses today’s technology to create something really beautiful.  Fujiko is introduced to her gang from the original show one episode at a time, and she just steals the anime.  Talk about a master thief.  Four episodes in, and it’s fantastic.  I just hope it doesn’t peter out soon.  And I would watch at least a couple episodes of a prior series before jumping into this, just so you get the bare bones of what’s happening.

InuYasha – Episodes 14-15 InuYasha Cover

Late night shounen time!  Yes, there is a ‘u’ in there, I checked.  My apologies.  However, I can’t apologize for the two episodes I watched which were basically like…Kagome gets kidnapped and possessed by the ghost of InuYasha’s old almost lover…yeah.  Kinda boring, kinda dumb, wasn’t really feeling it.  But at least I finished a disc!  In 2014, I am going to really try to finish a bunch of shows before I start new ones.  This will probably be easy during the winter season as nothing is catching my eye besides the Sailor Moon re-make (which is going to be an ONA?  What the fuck??  It doesn’t even get to go on television???  My heart hurts a lot.).  Anyway, InuYasha.  I’ll get through you.  Or at least through box set one.

Devil Survivor 2: The Animation – Episode 1 Devil Survivor 2 The Animation Cover

Ah, yes, it’s the end of 2013, which means it’s time for Top Video/Post-a-Palooza, where I sit on youtube for long periods of time and check out everyone’s recommendations from the previous year.  I believe I caught this in a couple best OP videos, so I decided to turn it on.  This anime looks to be part survival game/part apocalypse in the first episode.  There is a website where you can see people’s faces right before they die if you sign up for it, and, lo and behold, the protagonist catches himself on there right before a train hits him and crushes him to death.  Or does it…  He is given the choice to live or die via the website, and when he decides to not kick the bucket, it automatically downloads this app onto his phone, which is like a live action Pokemon for demons where they actually come out of the phone and beat up other “bad” demons.  His two friends get this app, as well, and it’s like a continuous loop of “I wanna be the very best like no one ever was.”  I don’t think there will be training or a gotta catch ’em all attitude, but our protagonist does, apparently, have the strongest demon ever.  It’s a tiger.  Rawr.  The first episode was nothing special, and if it says something, I nodded off during the second one (twice).  I’ll stay awake though and plow through some more.

For some reason, as I was checking out old posts, my best of the week recap things aren’t showing up…I don’t know what’s up with that.  I type them.  Maybe I need a new layout.  Just go watch Fujiko Mine.  You won’t be disappointed.  And since you made it all the way to the end, here’s a free Crunchyroll guest pass:

Next week marks the end of Diabolik Lovers, which I’m sure will make most of you weep with joy, while I weep for the end of my dirty little secret anime.  Everyone just hates it so much.  Now you know how I feel about Girls Bravo.  Suck it.

Anime Mondays #39

I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday weekend if you’re in the US!  I didn’t do much, but I did go see Frozen, which was absolutely amazing.  I don’t have a sister, but it made me think of my two baby nieces and then the tears just started flowing.  I am a sap, guys.  This is gonna be a long post.  Settle in and turn on Spotify, that’s what I’m doing.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Diabolik Lovers – Episodes 9-10 Diabolik Lovers Cover

So…nine episodes in, this anime tries to have a plot.  Ugh.  I know, people with taste were just waiting for the plot to kick in, but not me.  Please, give me my  shameless weekly dose of “fanservice” so I can get on with my day.  I mean, there’s still some thrown in there, but it’s not as trashy, especially since some of it is still coming from the pink haired vampire, who always has to cross that creeper line and say something about his fangs.  Yui is going to “awaken,” (sexually? psychically? I don’t know) and turn into Cordelia, who was a mother to half these vampires.  Needless to say, they all tried to kill her.  But, they love the submissive Yui, so will they try to save her?  Or just kill her?  See, the plot sucks.  Over it.

Golden Time – Episode 8 Golden Time Cover

Banri + Linda forever, okay.  This week, Linda tells him that she would have turned him down on the bridge if she had made it on time, and he had, you know, not gotten critically injured and practically killed, but, of course, she’s lying.  You know it, I know it, and she employs the girl tactic of saving face, to let his current relationship with Koko play out.  I know she’s just trying to be the good cop here, and I’ve done it before, too, but man…I wonder how much confusion and heartbreak people would save if we’d just be honest with them instead of trying to do what’s supposedly in their best interests.  A lot?  I’m thinking a lot.  Other stuff happens here, but it’s wholly unimportant because it’s about that tiny girl who the other guy likes.  No one cares.  Make my love triangle happen.

Naruto – Episodes 34-37 Naruto cover

The three stooges get back from part two of their exam, scrolls in hand, and can move on to part three.  There’s all this ninja babble that’s probably supposed to be important, but I’m taking a card from the main character and forgetting the moral lesson while I go eat ramen instead.  Sasuke is cursed, and everybody knows it, but he wants to keep fighting anyway.  Dumbass.  Of course, he gets picked first for the “combat rounds,” which need to take place to weed out the weak people before round 3 can start, and predictably, he’s getting his ass kicked.  I’m sure he’ll win as soon as I put in the next DVD, but you know…tension.  This is really dragging out.  I hope I don’t have to sit through every goddamned battle.

Project A-Ko Movie (Completed!) Project A-Ko Cover

I bought this during the recent Discotek sale on Right Stuf, thinking that I had seen it once before when the Sci-fi Channel (spelled correctly) used to have anime week, but after watching it, I’m not sure if this was it.  All the weird mech shows from the 80s kind of blend together.  It was cute, sure, but I zoned out for a lot of it.  Basically, A-Ko and C-Ko are bffs for life, and they go to the same school together.  While there, B-Ko, an old childhood friend, remembers that her and A-Ko used to be bffs, but as soon as C-Ko came along, A-Ko dropped her.  So, B-Ko thinks the best course of revenge is to become “friends” (and I use that term very, very loosely) with C-Ko, and it will destroy A-Ko.  Meanwhile, she also tries to kick A-Ko’s ass, and would have been successful, except that A-Ko has some kind of freaky strength, which causes some space organization to become interested in her, and it all goes downhill from there.  Cause y’all know I am not a fan of space OR robots, and this has both.  I ranked this 6/10 on MAL, mostly for the parts that took place on the ground.  If you took out the robots, this would have promise, but, well…it was made in the 80s.  Always space.  Always robots.

Toriko – Episodes 4-13 Toriko cover

I picked this back up because I had the urge to watch Pokemon again, but then I really didn’t want to sit through it…this was the shounen (shonen? help me out here, spell check isn’t doing it) title that was closest to it.  The English dub for this show is phenomenal.  Ian Sinclair is a beast.  But the animation…this is one of the most poorly animated shows I have ever seen.  I mean, it’s almost as bad as Shadow Star Narutaru, which is just an abomination towards the end.  It’s like…really bad flash animation in some points, and in others, it’s like the character is attached to a popsicle stick and someone is just bouncing it along a background.  Seriously.  It’s really bad.  As for plot, it’s still Pokemon with food.  Nothing interesting really happens, except Toriko gets a dog.  This is definitely going back on hold for awhile.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters – Episodes 1-16 Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters Cover

Yeah…this happened.  I never watched the series on tv, but, hello, the long-running curse strikes again, and Amazon had this on sale, so I had myself a little mini-marathon.  And honestly, it’s not so bad, even if the dub is atrocious.  I mean, why does Joey sound like a Soprano?  Dub aside, this show is all tournament fighter, no filler.  I LOVE TOURNAMENT FIGHTERS.  I mean, it’s literally got hit points on there while guys play this card game.  It’s got logic and teaches kids how to play this game (merch tie in!) which doesn’t really bother me, but you know what does?  How Yugi doesn’t lose.  Ever.  At least so far.  Like…he keeps pulling just the right cards out of his deck, and I know, the power of heart, or whatever, is psychically making him pull the right cards, but come on.  No matter how much I love pikachu, I’m sure if I played Pokemon, I wouldn’t pull him every time.  This is a decent show, though, and I understand why so many people like it.

Haganai – Episodes 10-12 (Completed!) and OVA 13 Haganai Cover

I caved and plowed through this show just to finish it, and I’m so glad I’m done.  Please remind me this when Funimation comes out with the sequel so I do not buy it.  God, the last half of this series was all fanservice crap.  Like, embarrassing fanservice crap, where I wanted to watch this by myself and mute it just to make sure no one ever would catch me with it.  Most of it is Rika’s fault (and I can only remember her name because she refers to herself in third person).  Ugh, what a hot mess she is.  The gang goes to the beach, and then at some summer festival, the dark haired chick’s hair catches on fire and she has to cut it…and finally the dude realizes that she is his only childhood friend from years ago.  And that’s it.  No, seriously, that’s how it ends.  I thought there was one more episode because the conclusion was absolutely non-existent, but it turns out the last episode is a worthless OVA about them going into a video game or a “round-robin story” again.  If this hadn’t turned into a harem fanservice piece of crap, the show actually had promise, but that’s asking too much.  I still liked the dub, though, haters be damned.  I ranked both the series and the OVA 6/10 on MAL, but that’s being generous.  Really generous.

Yu Yu Hakusho – Episodes 51-56 Yu Yu Hakusho Title

Watching one tournament fighter made me want to pop in another, so Yu Yu Hakusho it is!  The gang is finally in the finals, but before they even started, the giant enemy asshole went and killed Genkai.  Really?  Really???  I know it was all a plot device for character motivation, but come the fuck on.  Why do you have to go and kill the grandma?  Then the red haired dude almost dies in battle, I cry, the end.  STOP TUGGING AT MY HEART, TOURNAMENT FIGHTER, THAT IS NOT WHAT I AM WATCHING YOU FOR.  I now only have two more box sets plus the OVAs to get through, so I am making a ton of progress, and am, therefore, awesome.

Lovely Complex – Episodes 1-24 (Completed!) Lovely Complex Cover

I think I’m going to do a full post on this show, so, for now, let me just tell you that I loved this so much I watched every single episode in a day, and I have now found a new anime that tells the complete story of my goddamned life (take a backseat, Nana), and I laughed, I cried (A LOT), I related.  Y’all know I love my shoujo, but this is like….one of the best.  I ranked LoveCom 9/10 on MAL, and everyone should check it out.  Seriously.

Best of the Week: Lovely Complex, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, Yu Yu Hakusho

Love it or Leave it: Golden Time, Diabolik Lovers, Project A-Ko

Hope it Gets Better:

I need a new shoujo in my life, otherwise I’m just going to re-watch Kimi Ni Todoke and cry a lot.  Any suggestions?

Anime Mondays #37

So I’ve been thinking more and more lately about turning these blog posts into youtube videos.  My problem?  I don’t want to edit them.  In fact, I dropped out of film school because I hated editing so much.  This is the issue when you’re a perfectionist, and every single second of film has to be exactly what I want, or I scrap the whole thing.  It would take me two months to post a freaking review.  Anyone want to be my editor?  I have a nice camera.  I have a good microphone.  I even have lighting.  I just…don’t want to clip and piece things together.  Oh well.  Something to think about for next week.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Rose of Versailles – Episodes 21-22 Rose of Versailles Cover

I had the brilliant idea last weekend to try and marathon another series since I had done so well with Kuroko no Basuke, and so I popped my Rose of Versailles DVDs in and hoped for the best.  Apparently, the best only got me two more episodes into the series.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s not worse than the first half, which I absolutely adored.  I guess my ADD was just not having subtitles for the moment.  The second half of the series begins with Jeanne being a totally greedy bitch and using some perverted church guy for his money by promising him “audiences” with the queen.  Of course, Marie Antoinette knows nothing about this and already thinks he’s a giant creeper, so you know this isn’t going to go well.  Eventually, Jeanne pretty much steals a baller necklace and blames Marie Antoinette for it, and life starts to turn into a hot mess because the queen already has ostracized herself from the people of France because she had babies and doesn’t want to bother with anyone but her kids anymore.  She’s still a child, even though she has children.  Life really wasn’t that different back in the day, huh?  More historical stuff is being tied in now.  I’m ready for more Oscar and less true facts.

Dragon Ball – Episode 51 Dragon Ball Cover

There’s still no fighting going on.  Bulma and her crew are getting chased by some military guy.  I miss the fighting.  Come back, fighting.  Please?

Naruto – Episodes 26-30 Naruto cover

So, I caved and bought the second box set off Amazon.  And then was treated to a recap episode (choke) and this awesome arc about the second super ninja test.  Except the awesome arc quickly got boring and repetitive when the test really turned out to be this vehicle for a snake-infused bad guy to beat up Sasuke.  Really?  He must be as special as Naruto, but at the same time, JUST LET THE DAMNED NINJAS COMPLETE A GOAL ALREADY.  Also, there are some really disgusting visuals in these episodes.  And Sakura proves how useless she really is, as all she can do is babysit the comatose bodies of Sasuke and Naruto.  Man, if anyone is going to get killed off, she gets my vote.

Outbreak Company – Episode 1 Outbreak Company Cover

I don’t know why I read this description on Crunchyroll and decided to give this show a try.  For some reason, I thought it might be Sword Art Online-esque, but I should have known better after I saw the word “otaku.”  Basically, this loser otaku guy gets shoved into a fantasy world to introduce them to Japanese culture by way of anime and manga, but all he really does is scream over all the people there who are some kind of anime stereotype (ie: maid, elf, little girl empress, etc.).  I don’t know if the episodes will get better or not, and I don’t intend to find out for a long, long while because I just…ugh.  Another dumb show on Japanese television.  Let’s be real, the morning wood gag really turned me off.

Diabolik Lovers – Episode 8 Diabolik Lovers Cover

So, three of the vampires killed their own mother.  I kind of knew that was coming.  I mean, if you didn’t after the last episode…come on.  Instead of being just warped and sexually twisted, they are now murderers, as well.  Super.  Actually, for the first time, I got the weird, creeper vibe watching this show, and it was because the pink haired vampire said something along the lines of, “I want my fangs to enter you always,” and I was like….sufficiently creeped out.  Supposedly people think he is the least offensive of all of them, but…not this girl.  If anyone would make me peace out of the vampire house, it would be the pink haired one.  Let’s be real, guys who appear the “nicest” in a room full of creepers, are actually the biggest crazies of them all.

Golden Time – Episode 7 Golden Time Cover

Okay, so I am officially a member of Camp Koko Is a Nutcase after this episode.  I loved her just a little more when she explained her reasoning for blowing off Tada Banri, but then she immediately introduced him to her father as her boyfriend and then jumped all up in his business acting like they were this perfect Hallmark couple the morning after the love confession.  Seriously?  But Tada’s eating that shit up, so he’s a little kooky, as well…maybe they’re made for each other.  The Paris thing…oh man.  That got me, though.  No wonder she’s so high maintenance.  “Yeah, I’ll totally sleep with you, but we have to be in Paris first!”  No wonder whatshisface hated her guts.  Still hoping for that Banri/Linda thing to happen.  I feel it.  It’s gonna.

Pokemon – Episodes 14-18 Pokemon Cover

Watching that College Humor video with the updated Pokerap made me realize that I didn’t even know there were more than 150 pokemon…let alone 718.  I am a bad, bad fan.  I still want to see every episode before I die, so I thought I’d get cracking.  I made a dent?  I tried.  Most of these episodes center around Ash & Crew ON A BOAT (chasing buoys, motherfucker), and the boat sinks and then they’re trapped on Giant Pokemon island, and James buys a Magikarp…oh my god.  I love Team Rocket.  The hilarity of them was lost on me when I was a kid, but those guys carry the entire show.  Also, the episode where the pokemon speak with awkward English subtitles was in this bunch.  Never do that again.  Dear god.

Clamp School Detectives – Episodes 1-5 Clamp School Detectives Cover

I finally returned a Netflix disc I had sitting on top of my TV for two months, and this was the next one they sent me.  Truthfully, I only put it in my queue because I was watching Cin Wicked’s Year of Clamp and it was a Clamp show I had never heard of….which is nuts, because I thought I’d at least seen part of every Clamp show (yes, even X, the movie and the tv series).  So, I had to skip his retrospective on this, and watched the show instead.  Honestly…I’m not really impressed.  I thought all the main characters were girls at first, and they just seem way too young to be solving mysteries, even if the mysteries are extremely pedestrian.  I’ll give the next group of episodes a shot, but eh…not my favorite.

Ace of Diamond (Diamond no Ace) – Episode 7 Ace of the Diamond Cover

Oh, hooray, another episode where Sawamura acts like a spoiled brat.  Even though he’s moved up to second string, that’s not good enough for him, and the fact that he gets assigned to practice with a catcher who’s not on first string makes him act even more like a baby.  Dude…get a clue.  You used to be charming and passionate, and now you’re just even more the dickbag.  I did laugh out loud with the pudding joke, though.  At least the other characters are saving this show.

Kuroko no Basuke Season 2 – Episode 7 Kuroko no Basket Season 2 Cover

I can’t believe I waited a whole week for a tie game and a flashback episode.  A flashback episode where NOTHING HAPPENED.  I got all excited thinking we’d finally find out how Teppei got his injury (my money is on his creepy rival hurting him somehow), but no, it was just about how the basketball club formed, with the dude in the glasses having ridiculous hair.  Also…a tie?????  Really??  No overtime????  Unheard of.

I forgot to do my round-up last week.  Whoops.

Best of the Week: Golden Time

Love it or Leave it: Naruto, Kuroko no Basuke, Rose of Versailles, Diabolik Lovers

Hope it Gets Better: Pokemon, Ace of Diamond, Clamp School Detectives, Dragon Ball, Outbreak Company

It was a pretty crappy week, but have a free Crunchyroll guest pass anyway:

See you next time!

Anime Mondays #36

I’m baaaaack!  My vacation was a success.  The Backstreet cruise was insane (though, not as insane as I was led to believe, but it still far exceeded my expectations), and Disney World was adorable and not at all crowded.  I tried to go all commando park touring and ended up sick (which I am still trying to get over), but we got a lot done and still managed to fit in some one of a kind experiences.  I can’t wait to take my baby niece there and watch her go crazy running around in a cute little dress.  Anyway, we have a lot to get through today, as I’m at least three weeks behind, so let’s party.  Also, MAL will only let me go back to last week so…let’s see if I can remember what I’ve watched in the past month.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

GetBackers – Episodes 46-49 (Completed!) GetBackers Cover

Well…I finished it.  I think I finished this right before I went on vacation, actually.  And, you know what?  I was totally underwhelmed.  The ending was pretty worthless, and the entire series as a whole was best in its throwaway comedy episodes.  If it hadn’t tried so hard to be serious (I know, a serious, long-running shonen?  Who would’ve thought?), it would have been a hell of a lot better.  Am I sad I wasted all this time watching it?  Kinda.  But, you know, give me a long series, and I feel compelled to tackle it.  I rated this 4/10 on MAL because I really didn’t enjoy it at all.  At least it didn’t have robots.

Diabolik Lovers – Episodes 4-7 + Recap Special Diabolik Lovers Cover

Yeah, shove it, I still like this show.  The female protagonist is still worthless, but the vampire characters make up for it.  Especially the one who calls her Bitch-chan.  Hey, he is just saying what everyone else is thinking, alright?  Kudos.  Unfortunately, the newest episode is mostly a flashback, which, like our main character, is worthless, as it only shows how all the vampires used to be completely different before their screwed up mothers fucked them up somehow.  It’s also pretty obvious that the girl is going to be somehow related to them, which makes their blood sucking tendencies pretty incestual.  Can this show get any more screwed up?  I’m betting on yes, which is why I’ll continue to watch it.

Naruto – Episodes 14-25 Naruto cover

I’ve officially had to buy another set of this show since I plowed through the first one.  Finally, this stupid arc about the guy building the bridge ended (and ended really sadly, btw, I wasn’t expecting someone to actually DIE), and we’re on to all the rookie ninjas taking a test to up their ninja level.  I’m much more interested in this show when Naruto and the gang have clear goals, rather than them just aimlessly training or wandering around the forest waiting for some enemies to attack.  Also…Sasuke.  He’s the shit.  Don’t judge me.  It’s mindless enough so that I can watch it while I’m sick and still know what’s going on, so bravo Naruto.  You’re keeping my interest while other shonen do not.

Golden Time – Episodes 2-6 Golden Time Cover

Despite the inclusion of an amnesia plot, this series is shaping up to be my favorite of the fall season.  It is spiraling towards a high school slice of life, just with the inclusion of a lot of drinking because it takes place in college, but it’s dramatic enough to keep me hooked, especially in the last episode.  Holy crap, main dude, you’re an asshole.  I mean, I know Koko is completely being a bitch, too, using her “friendship” to throw it in Mitsuo’s face just to prove she’s doing okay after he rejected her, but damn.  Tada just…made it all or nothing for her, didn’t he?  I think Koko really wants to be friends with him, but how is she supposed to return a love confession so quickly when she’s been in love with Mitsuo all her life?  Anyway…I dig this show.  Also, I hope Tada gets with Linda.  But I won’t hate him if he doesn’t.

Ace of the Diamond – Episodes 2-6 Ace of the Diamond Cover

Much like Tada Banri, Sawamura is a real asshole.  Unfortunately, his asshole character trait makes him a perfect “ace,” because in order to be an ace, you have to be a douchebag.  Okay…I guess I can buy it…sort of.  He’s not a complete tool, he just loves baseball so much that he doesn’t want anyone to get in his way or to support people if he’s not involved and playing.  But once he’s on the field…watch out.  He will get his team more fired up than anybody.  At points, I get this show confused with the other sports anime I am currently watching (hold on for that one), but then I remember that Diamond no Ace has more assholes than the other show, and I can figure it out.  Apparently I love sports anime, now.  Who knew?  Thanks, random baseball show.

Kuroko no Basket – Episodes 1-25 (Completed!) Kuroko no Basket Cover

Yes, I marathoned this entire series.  There’s no judging.  I ran out of Diamond no Ace episodes and wanted to watch another sports show, and this was the first one I thought of.  And I wasn’t disappointed.  Every character in this show has something that caught my eye.  Sure, there are assholes, but they aren’t complete assholes.  Kuroko, for having the show named after him, isn’t necessarily the main guy here; everyone on his team and off has something to contribute to the overall arc of the story.  I will say that the prelude got really annoying after about the fifth episode, and that the openings contain characters that aren’t even shown until the second season, so I was going all, “when is that purple haired guy going to show up and wreck shit??” and it didn’t happen.  Thankfully, season 2 of this anime is airing now because it ended on one of those GIVE ME MORE NOW NOW NOW notes, and you know how much I hate waiting for shit.  Speaking of shit, Kise is THE shit.  I hope he busts Aomine’s ass in season 2.  I ranked this 7/10 on MAL, and hope the second season is just as addictive, even if I have to wait for new episodes.

Kuroko no Basket Season 2 – Episodes 1-6 Kuroko no Basket Season 2 Cover

Okay, so not only did I watch the entire first season, but I am now completely caught up with the second.  TOO MANY NEW CHARACTERS.  Now, instead of just one Generation of Miracles, there’s a Generation of Miracles Lite?  How many people do I have to look for in the opening now?  Also, the plays are getting more into the fantastical realm of things with basketballs and people vanishing.  I mean, I guess they had to make Kuroko more of a bad ass, somehow.  I’m still digging it, but I know I won’t watch for a couple weeks just because I like to marathon shows that end on cliff hangers, and WHAT THE SHIT, THIS LAST EPISODE’S CLIFF HANGER.  I mean, you just couldn’t tell me who won that game, could you?  Bitches.

Good Luck Girl – Episode 1 Good Luck Girl Cover

Once again, Funimation trailers suck me into shows I wouldn’t normally watch.  This girl has absolutely everything, and because of her excess good luck, she needs to take some bad luck back so other people can be happy.  Um…okay.  This premise is basically there so lucky girl can fight with a demon and make a lot of boob jokes.  It’s funny, don’t get me wrong, and it’s not as stupidly fanserviced out like other shows I’ve seen lately, but, let’s be real, I’ve only seen one episode…I’m sure it could (and probably will) get a lot worse.  I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt, though; it will be the show I continue to watch when I’m sick of reading subtitles.

Code Geass – Episode 2 Code Geass Cover

I have a lot of rental discs that need to go back because I’ve kept them for months…and unfortunately, I have no desire to watch any of them.  I thought I’d like this show, even though it had robots, but the second episode was pretty much ALL robots, and I spent my time editing pictures in photoshop instead of actually paying attention.  Whoops.  I have 8 more episodes of this to get through so I can return these DVDs, and I don’t send back anime without watching it.  Someone help me.  Too many robots.

Dragon Ball – Episodes 49-50 Dragon Ball Cover

Now that I ran out of Naruto episodes for the time being, this is what I’ve turned to to watch before I go to bed.  Sadly, Dragon Ball is only good when there’s some tournament fighting going on.  Right now, I’m in the middle of some kind of Red Ribbon Army chasing everyone while they go through an abandoned pirate ship, and it’s just boring.  Even with a robot skull, it’s boring, and I love skulls.  One Piece next?  It’s looking very plausible.

For getting through this whole recap episode/post, here is a free Crunchyroll guest pass!

Now it’s back to photoshop so I can get all my Disney pictures ready for the internet.  Could there be a trip report in the near future?  Magic 8 Ball says…

Anime Mondays #35 (Fall 2013 First Impressions!)

Man, I was so excited when I completed a bunch of shows last week.  I’m trying to get my list of currently watching anime under control since I’m in the middle of over 200 shows…don’t judge me.  So what did I do?  Picked up a bunch more.  Stupid fall season.  By the way, if you want to stalk my life, you can follow me not only on MAL, but on Hummingbird and Anilist, as well.  They all pretty much have the same features…except the awesome status update feeds on Hummingbird and Anilist.  That way I can talk about junk I’m watching while it’s happening instead of spoiling my twitter feed.  Shall we get started?

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers below up to the episodes listed!

Naruto – Episodes 9-13 Naruto cover

I viewed some of these episodes and actually watched them (as opposed to when I normally watch Naruto, which is when I am half-conscious and in my bed), and damn…the quality is terrible.  Like, I seriously had to check to make sure I was watching this show on DVD, as opposed to streaming it with a crap connection.  The animation is really poor, along with the quality of the transfer.  I was still entertained even though I was awake, however.  Ridiculous.  There’s this new ninja now who was disguised as some kind of super ninja tracker who goes and kills bad guys, but no one can tell if this ninja is a boy or a girl.  Seriously.  I mean, this character has said multiple times that he’s a boy, but I totally don’t buy it.  We’re still building this bridge, and the ninja that the tracker “killed” isn’t really dead, and we spent two episodes watching Naruto and Sasuke run up a tree to train their chakras or whatever….and I hate that it’s so mindless that I enjoy it.  I can have it on in the background while I’m doing other things, and I don’t have to worry about whether or not I’m going to miss something important.  Total plus for a girl like me who always likes noise.  I mean, I’m listening to My Chemical Romance as I write this.  The Black Parade, if you were wondering.  RIP, MCR, RIP.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion –  Episode 1 Code Geass Cover

Oh, the fond memory I have of turning on Cartoon Network in Nashville really late on some random Saturday night while my friend and I were throwing back Captain Morgan to finish off our giant bottle and finding anime on…and I think it was Code Geass; all I remember is watching some really well drawn guy pilot a giant robot.  Anyway, even if that wasn’t the same show, I’ll just pretend it was because I was really drunk and wearing a cowboy hat, and that’s how I’d like to keep my first memory of this show.  Fast forward years later, and even though I hate mech shows, I picked this up because I heard it was fucked up.  One episode in, and it has definitely met my fucked up standards.  I couldn’t even tell you what it’s about other than this weird girl gives Lelouch all these bad ass mind control powers, and he makes a shitload of soldiers kill themselves.  Just like that, I want to continue.  See how my twisted mind works?

Hayate the Combat Butler – Episode 8 Hayate the Combat Butler Cover

I really only watched this because I’ve had this disc from my rental service since the summer started, and I can’t bring myself to watch more than one episode at a time.  It’s not that this is a bad show, because it’s not, it’s really funny, it’s just that it’s extremely fast paced and only has subtitles so I have to pay attention to it when I watch it.  I know.  I say that like it’s such a horrific thing to have to pay close attention to the shows I watch, but when I watch tv, I’m usually doing six things at once.  Multitasking for the win.  This episode was cute, though.  Hayate and the maid went on a date while his creepy stalkers tried to take pictures of him.  I swear, if this was dubbed it probably would have sold better.  Doesn’t matter now because Bandai went under, but you know.

Strike the Blood – Episode 1 Strike the Blood Cover

Now…you guys know how I feel about vampire shows.  Despite my, ahem, distaste, for Blood Lad, I normally devour every one of them.  Did you like that?  My horrific puns?  Okay, I’m done.  Strike the Blood seems interesting enough.  This high school dude becomes an extremely prolific vampire, even though he had no desire to whatsoever, and still tries to act like a normal teenager in an area of the world where magic and monsters are allowed to exist as a sanctuary and for research purposes, as long as they don’t fuck things up too much.  This demon fighter girl gets assigned to trail the vampire dude, and because he ends up breaking up a fight she’s in and finding her wallet, she doesn’t kill him straight off.  There’s some ridiculous back story that’s only hinted at in flashbacks before the first episode ends, but it’s not as dumb as Blood Lad, so it won’t take me months before I watch the second episode.  Unfortunately, there’s a lot of pointless fanservice, which makes me cringe, but I’ll motor past it.

Beyond the Boundary – Episode 1 Beyond the Boundary Cover

This show is really beautiful.  It’s got the brilliant Kyoto Animation art style,  but that means it also comes with the KyoAni moe tropes.  Holy crap, the female protagonist is ANNOYING.  I mean, she’s supposed to be this bad ass demon fighter who can flip over a tall gate and stab some dude instantly with her blood sword (Deadman Wonderland, anyone?), but she constantly trips over shit and gets buckets on her head and thinks someone turned the lights out.  Seriously???  Seriously.  Luckily, the other characters are more interesting, including the fact that the aforementioned “some dude” is actually immortal.  Awesome.  I don’t know if I’ll be keeping up with this weekly, but it will definitely be a show I’ll finish by the time the season ends.  I was going to put a highly inappropriate question here, but just be thankful I deleted it.  You’re welcome.

Golden Time – Episode 1 Golden Time Cover

FINALLY AN ANIME THAT DOESN’T TAKE PLACE IN HIGH SCHOOL.  It takes place in college, but at least it’s a step up.  I love this.  It reminds me so much of when I was in college, even though I didn’t go to law school.  From the first day jitters, and wondering how you’re going to fit in, to meeting a group of diverse people who you’ll end up spending the next four years with…I love it.  Finally, a slice of life I can get behind.  Plus, the main girl is certifiably insane, but adorable, and I love, LOVE the lead guy.  When he saw that festival chair with the lipstick for the first time and fell instantly in love with her, I fell instantly in love with him.  He’s not a doofus guy like most of the ones that are main characters in anime, he actually gets ideas of his own and runs with them.  I really hope I continue to love this show.  It might be my new Chihayafuru.

I Can’t Be a Hero, So Instead I’ll Get a Job – Episode 1 Hero Cover

I don’t even know what the real title for this is, in English or Japanese, so let’s just pretend it’s that.  I cannot get behind this show at all.  It’s like an unfunny version of the show from a couple seasons ago about the demon that worked at McDonald’s.  Except that was funny.  This just has a bunch of really unnecessary and badly drawn fanservice and an incredibly lame plot.  I’d almost rather watch this sped up and backwards like it does in the end credits, but even that is 90 seconds too much.  I hate that I started it because now I’ll be compelled to finish it, but just…ew.  It won’t be any time soon, I can tell you that much.

Ace of the Diamond – Episode 1 Ace of the Diamond Cover

Come close, I want to tell you a secret.  I really, really like sports movies.  I don’t like sports, but I like the movies.  Like The Mighty DucksRookie of the Year?  I’m all over that shit.  I’ll take my sports scripted over live any day.  Now, here’s another secret: other than Japanese games, I’ve never seen a sports anime all the way through.  I might have to make an exception for Ace of the Diamond.  So far, it’s a pretty charming tale about a pitcher who prides teamwork above all else, even if his team sucks, transitioning from junior high baseball to high school baseball.  A baseball school is scouting him, but he doesn’t want to leave his old team behind.  The protagonist is kind of a goof, but I like where this is going.  Plus, the fact that I think this show is only going to be 12 episodes or something means it won’t drag out like tournament fighters.  A+++.

Diabolik Lovers – Episode 3 Diabolik Lovers Cover

Screw the haters, I still like this show.  It’s not for a valid reason, like it has great animation or a complicated plot or anything like that.  But it has vampires, a reverse harem, AND is completely fucked up.  So take that.  Vamp of the week is the one with the headphones, and he pulls the lead girl into the bathtub with him (fully clothed, but how are they both not electrocuted??) and bites her after the red haired vamp gave her hickeys on her chest and had her for a snack.  I know.  I know.  I like…can’t even.  But I must.  This lead girl makes me want to punch her, or at least hope that one of the vamps sucks her dry, much like the lead of UtaPri, but I can’t stop watching this.  I’ll be the only person who buys the DVDs because Sentai actually licensed this.  I KNOW.  I never claimed to be a rational person when it comes to reverse harems, guys.  Leave me alone.

Kill La Kill – Episode 1 Kill La Kill Cover

I went back and forth over whether or not I wanted to watch this because of all the hype.  I’ve heard this was supposed to be THE show to watch of the season, and I avoided Attack on Titan for the same reason, but then I really enjoyed it for the most part, so…ugh.  Anyway, I bit the bullet and watched Kill La Kill.  And subsequently HATED it.  Apparently, this is supposed to be one of those shows where you have to “turn your brain off” to watch it, but I can’t even see myself enjoying it like I watch my damned shonen.  The art style is atrocious.  Everything is ugly,  And it’s set in this world where school uniforms give you magical powers, and the one that comes alive attaches itself to our main girl (via some fucked up shit where the UNIFORM literally rips the girl’s clothes off) and says “FEED ME BLOOD!” like it’s freaking Audrey II.  The plot is ridiculous, and it’s not the kind of fucked up that’s psychological, it’s just the kind of fucked up that’s stupid.  I’m not going to feel bad if I drop this show entirely, which is something I never do, but on the same token, it’s made by the same people who did Evangelion, which is the only show I have dropped.  I just can’t get behind this.  I know I’ll be the only one, but I don’t care.  Let’s kill Kill La Kill, y’all.  For real.

Best of the Week: Golden Time, Diabolik Lovers, Ace of the Diamond, Strike the Blood, Code Geass

Love it or Leave it: Beyond the Boundary, Naruto, Hayate the Combat Butler

Hope it Gets Better: I Can’t Be a Hero, So Instead I’ll Get a Job, Kill La Kill

I know I have a Crunchyroll Guest Pass coming up, so I’ll put that in a new post once it comes, along with a few more first impressions because there won’t be another Anime Mondays post until November.  I’ll miss you, Anime Mondays!  But you will rise from the dead like zombies and everything will be right again once Halloween is over. ❤
