Anime Mondays #70

Once again, I went over to youtube this week.  The crunchyroll guest pass is still active, so if you click in the description box on the actual youtube page for the video, it’s all yours.

Went to the Ren Faire this weekend, and (shocker) only bought a couple things!  But there were hot guys everywhere, so, really, that’s where the majority of my time went.  Next week, I am going out of town, so I will probably go back to the actual blog, but we’ll see if I have the time to film.

For those of you playing the home game, here is the anime I watched this week, if you don’t want to watch the video:

  • Hunter x Hunter – Episode 2
  • One Piece – Episodes 85-87
  • A-Channel – Episodes 3-6
  • Ao Haru Ride – Episode 5
  • Nana – Episodes 38-47 (Re-watch) (Completed!)
  • Nodame Cantabile – Episode 3
  • Hikaru no Go – Episodes 29-32

246 currently watching anime, 34 completed this year.

Anime Mondays #20

This has been a week full of ups and downs, kids.  With all the life stuff going on, I didn’t have a lot of time to watch tv period, but I tried to fit some anime viewing in for you.  And…and…I found an etsy listing to get the cosplay/Halloween costume of my dreams made, so as soon as I can have my date with a measuring tape, I’m going to be the happiest girl in the world.  For now, though, it’s Monday, so let’s recap the week, shall we?

All images below are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

GetBackers – Episodes 14-15 GetBackers Cover

This Makubex arc just keeps on going, guys.  When will it end?  Like, the three episode arcs were perfect, in my opinion.  It was just enough to keep me interested, but not too much that I got bored.  Well…now, I’m getting bored.  You knew it would happen.  And we are introduced to even MORE worthless side characters.  I wish there were just a Dr. Jackal and Lady Poison spin-off.  That I would watch and not complain about.  I got another disc of this in the mail, though, so as soon as I get through the one in my DVD player currently (you’ll see what it is below), it’s back to GetBackers.  You know, sometimes I question my decisions to torture myself with long series when I could quite easily just finish all the 13 episode ones I have sitting here waiting for me to get in the mood to watch them…welcome to the world of undiagnosed OCD.

NANA – Episodes 31-34 NANA Cover

I remember I was having a really crappy day last week, so I felt the urge to turn on something I was completely in love with instead of wasting my time watching crap.  Luckily, I was in the middle of a NANA re-watch, and there we have it.  Guys, my love for this series knows no bounds.  It is in my top 5 series of all time.  And to think that I almost never watched it because I didn’t like the art style.  Fortunately, it’s something you get used to right away, and even if I didn’t, I still would have been sucked in by the amazing story and the best soundtrack I have ever heard.  Seriously.  I actually tracked down the songs from this show on Itunes and purchased all the ones I could, which was not an easy task since a lot of them aren’t available to buy in the States.  For those of you who haven’t seen NANA yet, what is wrong with you???  Nah, I kid, but here’s the gist of it: there are two girls named Nana who are brought together by fate when they sit next to each other on the train when they are both moving to Tokyo.  One Nana is the lead singer of a punk band, while the other Nana (who is later nicknamed Hachi) is completely boy crazy and just wants to find her place in life.  Now, normally, when I watch a show, I can find one character I can completely relate to.  But in NANA, oh no, I can completely relate to BOTH Nanas.  Rockstar Nana is completely cool and sure of herself and wants to sing for the rest of her life.  Hachi Nana doesn’t know what she wants except she wants to be in love and have someone love her in return.  If you mix the two Nanas together, you pretty much get a Glitterbots.  Like, if I could be one character from any show/book/movie, etc. it would be Rockstar Nana.  She’s not perfect by any means, but I still would strive to be like her any day of the week.  Anyway, this show is like a soap opera, and despite being over 40 episodes long, the first time I watched it, I’m pretty sure I marathoned it in a weekend max.  You do not want to stop watching.  It’s never boring.  There’s always some sort of drama going on.  And you can’t even skip the opening and ending themes because they are just perfect.  In fact, NANA has one of my favorite openers of all time and TWO of my favorite ending themes.   (Watch for a future post whenever I get the chance to sit down and find all the links, but for now, here is one of the best ending songs of all time.  OF ALL TIME.)

Back to the episodes at hand, I had purchased the Viz sets and was watching the dub for my re-watch of the series.  The NANA English dub is nothing to write home about, but at least they are not blasphemous because they didn’t even try to dub the songs into English.  However, they replaced one of the ending songs early on with a different one, and it completely fucked me up from the fansubbed version I first watched.  But now, we’re into the home stretch; Nana’s band has been signed to a record deal and Hachi is happy with her latest boyfriend until tragedy strikes…shit, I don’t want to ruin it for you if you haven’t watched it.  I really want everyone in the world to watch this show, and knowing stuff takes the fun out of it.  I’ll just say that this group of episodes is FULL of melodrama and really delve deeply into Nana and Hachi’s relationship with each other.  Although the show is a love story, it’s more about the power of friendship between two women, and the bond that Nana and Hachi share…well…it takes a lot for it to be broken.  Fuck, I love this show.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya – Episode 1 The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Cover

See, I told you I was working through my list of anime I should probably watch.  Unfortunately, with just this first episode, I found nothing stellar about Haruhi.  Does it get better?  It seems like just another high school slice of life so far, but I only saw one episode because I got bored or had to leave or something.  Ugh, it was so unmemorable I can’t even remember why I stopped watching it.  But, I’m doing it!  Someone give me a gold star.

Dragon Drive – Episodes 6-7 Dragon Drive Cover

This is what I am currently watching before I go to bed.  The alternate universe stuff is getting a little better because it’s about to go into tournament fighter in an alternate universe mode, and we all know how much I love tournament fighters.  The little baby dragon keeps turning into this giant death sucker more and more now, though, and I’m like UGH KEEP THE CUTE THING SMALL, PLEASE.  But nope, he’s growing.  I have a rental of this I need to return, so I’m plugging away at it.  It’s not a show to write home about, but at least it’s improving instead of getting steadily worse.

Assemble Insert – Episodes 1-2 (Finished!) Assemble Insert Cover

Once again, Netflix decides to send me something random that had a long wait.  Not that I’m complaining, because, let’s be real, I hate waiting, so I watched this as soon as it came to my house.  Assemble Insert is a really, really old OVA series that’s only two episodes long, and, honestly, it could have benefited from one more episode to tie things up.  It’s so old, that it was released from RightStuf, not Nozomi or whatever the hell their label was called before that.  I thought it was only subtitled, but I guess there was a dub?  It played the subtitles automatically, though.  It’s supposed to be a parody, but a parody of what I could not tell you.  Basically, this organization holds Idol-style auditions to find a new superhero, and this girl named Maron wins because she’s cute, in high school, and can twist a microphone stand around like it’s a pipe cleaner.  There’s nothing really outstanding about her besides her super strength, but these guys clean her up, give her singing and dancing training and stick her in an embarrassing costume.  Then she fights things.  I pretty much described the entire plot right there.  It’s worth watching if you’re bored, but if you can’t track it down, you’re not missing much.  It wasn’t bad, per say, it just ended really abruptly.  I ranked it 5/10 for the sole reason that I love vintage stuff, but the story just wasn’t there to hook me.

Rose of Versailles – Episodes 1-5 Rose of Versailles Cover

Well, since Princess Knight got delayed until August, RightStuf took pity on its customers who ordered that with the first volume of Rose of Versailles together and sent out the box set.  Previously, I had seen one crappy fansub of this that was horrid quality, but I am a sucker for old anime and melodramas, so I knew I’d watch it eventually.  Thankfully, this new release is completely cleaned up and you can see the stars in the characters’ eyes.  Love it.  This show has to do with Marie Antoinette, but since I never studied the French Revolution, all I know is that eventually she’s going to say, “Let them eat cake!” and die.  Spoiler alert?  It’s really about this girl named Oscar, though, who was raised as a boy and is now Marie Antoinette’s Royal Guard or something.  Of course, everyone loves Oscar because she’s so beautiful and mysterious, and she’s like, whatever, fuck all of y’all I’m just going to do my job and protect my family.  This show is not for everyone.  It’s full of 80’s split screens and art style and THE SOAP OPERA OF IT ALL, OH MY GOD.  Clearly, I love it, like when they spent three episodes about how these two countries are going to go to war because bratty little Marie won’t speak to Madame du Barry, who is really just a prostitute who weaseled her way into the king’s bed.  The walls bleed.  Tons of people are dead already.  Bitches be catty, yo, and it is perfect.  I do not regret this purchase at all, and I can’t wait to watch the rest of this set, even if it means I’ll be chomping at the bit until the second part comes out.  I hate waiting.

And I bet you guys hate waiting, too, but to reward your patience, here is a free crunchyroll guest pass!

Check out the new shows on me while I sit here and watch ones that aired before I was even born, and then let me know which ones I should watch for the next Anime Monday.  Until then!
