Anime Mondays #69

Well…I finally did it.  I got off my butt and did my first youtube Anime Mondays.  We’ll see how this translates to a visual medium.  Yeah, writing is visual, but you get the drift.  Anyway, here it is!  Vlog or blog?   You be the judge.  That sounds like a really horrible reality show.

Clearly my purple hair is fading to some reddish color.  Don’t worry, it’ll get fixed in 12 days.

PS – The prize inside this post is in the video description box on youtube.

Here is a list of the anime I watched this week in case youtube isn’t your thing:

  • Btooom! – Episode 2
  • Naruto – Episodes 154-163
  • Hikaru no Go – Episodes 25-28
  • Ao Haru Ride – Episode 4
  • Madoka Magica – The Beginnings (Movie) (Completed!)
  • One Piece – Episodes 81-84
  • Yu Gi Oh! Duel Monsters – Episodes 129-137
  • Love Stage – Episode 4
  • Zankyou no Terror – Episode 4
  • Sailor Moon Crystal – Episode 3
  • Walkure Romanze – Episode 1

Currently watching 247 anime, completed 34 this year.  Let me tell you, blogging is much faster to do than vlogging.  I think I spent over 6 hours editing the two videos I put up, and I HATE editing.  It’s why I quit film school, friends.  Luckily, most of that 6 hours was spent learning how exactly to use iMovie (after figuring out that I couldn’t even begin to touch Final Cut Pro), and by the second video, I felt like a pro.  I’ve got a different camera to use for next week so this will be in higher quality, and, hopefully, the lighting won’t suck as much, but that depends on if my setup comes or not.  Youtubing is rough.  Major props from me to everyone who makes any type of video on there.  Seriously.

Anime Mondays #68

What’s been happening this week, you guys?  I had to shell out a shit ton of money to fix my car.  My poor baby.  The air conditioning was broken, so I took it in, and the technician discovered ten other things wrong with it.  It’s just an adorable PT Cruiser, how could things have gone so awry??  It’s putting a cramp in my style, that’s for sure.  I have some Right Stuf orders I need to make (big ones), and that’s not going to happen anytime in my near future.  Gee, guess I’ll be forced to watch my backlog.  Or, you know, Crunchyroll.  Probably Crunchyroll.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Yu Gi Oh Duel Monsters – Episodes 108-128 Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters Cover

I have no shame.  I watched the entire “Noah” arc of this series.  All of it.  Pretty much in a day.  And I am stupidly confused by it…not by any of the plot/character elements, but by the fact that I was sure Noah was Kaiba’s brother and that his step-dad was pulling the strings the whole time the first time he came on screen.  And this was supposed to be a big reveal??  The bigger reveal would have been to tell us what kind of accident he had to pretty much kill himself.  And how the step-dad’s disappearance factored into all of this.  Did he injure his own son and then feel guilt about it so many years later and want to injure himself?  Goddamned censoring.  So that happened.  And in the last episode of this arc, Kaiba said what I had been feeling the whole time.  I’m paraphrasing, but it goes a little something like this: that was a completely pointless diversion from the main path, NOW LET’S GET BACK TO THE BATTLE CITY FINALS.  A fucking men.  The coolest part of this is the four way duel that goes down to see who will battle against each other because all the strategies make zero sense, but everyone thinks they are the smartest in the world for spewing some words out of their mouths.  There cannot be a strategy in a four way duel because everyone is going to fuck up your strategy.  Although, Joey does grow some balls and tells Yugi to stop helping him…but then the idiot decides to battle Marek.  Stupid.  He loses, but has another one of those technicality TKO’s where he doesn’t lose by points but because he can’t get up off the ground.  And that’s where I stopped because I couldn’t take anymore of the made-up rules.  Is this less confusing in Japanese?  Can I even track down some fansubs?

A-Channel – Episode 2 A-Channel Cover

Yeah, the second episode wasn’t any better than the first.  Everyone gets caught in a rainstorm and then they all get in the bath.  I’ll never understand why Japanese people all like to jump in the tub together.  When I’m in the bath/shower, it’s the most peaceful time of my day since I don’t have to deal with anyone and can have some me time.  I do not like this show.  I will struggle to finish it because it’s a rental.

Ao Haru Ride – Episode 3 Ao Haru Ride cover

My Crunchyroll Roku channel would not play this episode, so I was forced to watch it on my laptop.  Actually, my Crunchyroll Roku channel has not been playing a lot of shit lately.  What is up with that?  I pay for this.  And I know I have to watch it in shit quality because it doesn’t support 1080p for some unknown reason, but goddamn, when I want to watch my shoujo romances, they had better work, or I am going to shounen-ly punch somebody in the face.  Hear that, Crunchyroll??  Anyway, this episode was cute.  I almost, ALMOST thought they were going to kiss, but then they didn’t and I’m okay with that.  And now, we are going to get a plot with other people, since they all joined the student council together.  I guess that’s fine.  I’m glad the main girl will make some real friends.  I’d rather this just be a romance, though.

One Piece – Episodes 79-80 One Piece Cover

I have put Naruto on an indefinite hiatus to try and tackle some of another long-running shounen that I feel I’ll never catch up on: enter One Piece.  I have the re-released collections from Funimation, and I’m up to 9 with 10 on pre-order, but I’m watching Collection 4.  Yeah.  Trying hard to catch up.  It doesn’t help that I’ve tried to watch episode 81 at least four times, and I’ve fallen asleep every time.  Ugh.  Anyway, so when we last left off, Nami was sick, and the guys were trying to sail somewhere to find her a doctor.  Well, they come upon this winter island, where they almost get shot before they get off the boat.  Luckily, there’s a good Samaritan in his winter coat, and he takes the gang onto the island to try and help Nami.  However, the only doctor is really a witch, and Luffy and Sanji have to carry the sick girl up a giant mountain to get to her.  Yeah, that’s happening.  There are giant killer rabbits, though, so life is good.  The giant duck is the best part of this series.  I’ll be sad if he ever leaves.

Ranma 1/2 – Episodes 2-3 Ranma Cover(Re-watch)

I was watching something…and got the urge to pop in Ranma for a couple of episodes.  Clearly, it wasn’t any actual anime episodes, probably something on youtube.  I’m going through the new Blu-ray release for these.  Remember last time when I swore there were episode previews and I couldn’t find them?  Yeah, you can’t chapter skip past the ending theme.  They are there.  I’m a moron.  Akane takes Ranma to school, and he is shocked to find out she has to knock down a gauntlet of guys who want to fight her to be able to date her every morning.  What??  Yeah, that is thanks to her senpai (whose name is escaping me but he calls himself Blue Thunder) who is also in love with her and doesn’t want anyone to touch her, so he issued that challenge.  Asshole.  He fights Ranma, but they fall in the pool, and now he’s in love with Girl Type Ranma.  Suck on that, Akane.  Say what you want, but I really like this show.  It’s definitely a classic, and I think everyone should check out at least a few episodes.  Just…not in English.

Love Stage – Episode 3 Love Stage cover

OH MY GOD.  There is a scene in this episode where I about lost my shit.  It’s pretty tastefully done, all outlines and glitter everywhere, but holy crap.  Never before have I seen something in an anime on Crunchyroll.  To recap, last week I wondered how the two dudes were going to fall in love with each other since neither one appears to be gay.  Apparently, it’s just immediate, animal attraction.  I’ll buy it.  You know why?  Because both of them are traumatized after they kiss again, and neither one knows what to do with himself.  Those poor dudes.  They are just so clueless.  I really hope in the next episode they both attempt to come to terms with their sexualities (or at least the fact that they are attracted to each other, gender be damned).  A lot of people wrote this series off because the character designs aren’t the norm, or because it’s yaoi, but Love Stage is really solid so far.  It’s my second favorite show of the season.  You go boys, with your bad selves.

Phi-Brain Season 2: Episodes 13-15 Phi Brain Season 2 Cover

I would have watched more of this, but, you know, Crunchyroll on Roku doesn’t want to play this, either.  I even succumbed to watching an episode on Hulu.  WITH COMMERCIALS.  The student council president fights Kaito with the fake ring and loses…and then he disappears.  Great.  Now I will be missing his stupid apple juice jokes for the rest of the season.  And then the Orpheus Order gets a new leader who is a real dickbag, and just starts trying to kill Kaito again.  I’d rather have Freecell, who just wants to play with him.  And then…and then…there’s an episode where they give a dog a replica ring.  Let me repeat.  THEY GIVE A DOG A REPLICA RING.  This show is fucking camp.  I can’t take it seriously.  I love it.

Bakamatsu Rock – Episode 4 Bakamatsu Rock cover

Speaking of camp, this entire episode takes place in a bath house.  Elephant noises abound!!  Oh god, I can’t take it.  You know how the stupid bath house/spa episodes always show girls running around naked?  Well, now it’s boys running around naked.  And the female anime watchers rejoice.  It’s hysterical, though, like, the guys hold a concert in an all-male bath house, and they are halfway into their first song when hundreds of dudes whip off their towels and start swinging them over their heads.  So they are legit about to start a naked mosh pit.  The fucking best ever.

Terror in Resonance – Episode 3 Terror in Resonance cover

I am starting to lose faith in this show.  There is some big plot element that’s going to be revealed, and it’s going to be something completely stupid.  I can feel it.  Also, it’s turning into a police drama, and that shit is boring.  But, it looks like 9 and 12 were in an orphanage?  Or possibly a little kid asylum?  There was some kind of bomb scare years and years ago, and while they were trying to get out, a lot of kids died.  Like, they couldn’t save them all.  So that looks like it’s going to be the reason why they are bombing seemingly random places that have to do with police and/or government.  Oh, and Lisa runs away from her crazy mom.  I really hope I’m wrong about this show, that the characters’ motivations will be something that’s relevant, but…eh.  I mean, I watch Phi-Brain.

Sailor Moon S – Episodes 32-38 (Completed!) (Re-watch) Sailor Moon S Cover

Watching the last six episodes of this series reminded me how much I love the Sailor Moon franchise as a whole, and why S will forever be the best series.  First of all, you have villains that do actual damage.  Mistress 9 and Pharaoh 90 actually BLEW UP A SCHOOL.  There’s wreckage and everything.  Secondly, they destroyed the Holy Grail and fucked up Sailor Moon to the fact that she had to force her heart crystal to pop out of her body in order to defeat them.  And Sailor Saturn had to kill herself just to fight off the evil.  Yeah, she gets re-incarnated, but still.  There are also more witches who get killed off in one episode apiece.  What??  I mean, shit is getting real.  And at the very end, Uranus and Neptune call out Sailor Moon on how unworthy she is to be the Messiah because she tried to save Hotaru instead of the world.  Ugh.  It’s SO GOOD.  I cried.  A lot.  Unfortunately, this marks a turning point for Uranus and Neptune who peace out of town after getting bitch slapped by Sailor Moon’s heart crystal power and don’t appear for the entirety of the next series.  Hence, I will be re-watching Sailor Moon Super S for continuity’s sake only.  This is just the best the Sailor Moon franchise has to offer because Sailor Moon is best when it’s serious.  I rated this 10/10 on MAL, and while I’m not positive it deserves it for all the filler, this is a show I will watch again and again.  I can’t wait until it comes out on Blu-ray.  And god, I hope they don’t fuck up the dub voices for Uranus and Neptune.  I don’t know who could do them justice.

Sailor Moon S Movie – (Completed!) (Re-watch) Sailor Moon S Movie Cover

I think I’ve seen this movie at least 50 times.  This might be showing my age a bit, but when I was a kid, I begged my parents to let me go to the post office to get a money order so I could order some VKLL fansubs.  Remember those?  Oh man.  This was the first glimpse I ever received of the Outer Senshi that wasn’t on a tiny .avi file on my computer.  And I loved them.  I haven’t seen this movie in years, though, since I got back into anime, and the whole Kaguya Hime thing?  It makes SO much more sense, now that I get the context.  I bought this Pioneer dvd off amazon or ebay or something, and it’s…interesting.  The transfer is terrible.  It looks just like my VHS tape did.  But the bonus features…man.  Shit is spelled incorrectly, but you can watch all the transformations and attacks just by pushing a button, and if I would have had this back in the day, maybe I wouldn’t have worn out my tape.  It also lets you jump to the infamous “Tuxedo Mask transformation,” and I did laugh out loud because I had forgotten about it.  Also, it recognizes — in print — that Haruka and Michiru are in love with each other.  No more cousins!  Take that, English dub!  The movie is cute.  It’s nothing special plot wise.  But this meant the world to me when I was a kid, and it will always be one of my favorites.  (In case you were wondering, the Sailor Moon movies do go down in quality the later they get.  Like, R is my favorite, then S, then Super S).  I rated this 8/10 on MAL, and I’ll stick by it.

Btooom! – Episode 1 (Re-watch) Btooom! Cover

I purchased this at the beginning of the month, and I have been holding off re-watching it for the sole fact that I didn’t want to add anything new to my list.  But yesterday, I said fuck it, and popped that sucker in.  The dub.  Oh man, the dub.  This new-ish guy who does the main dude…he is AWESOME.  Give him more work!  And then, my precious Brittney Karbowski is the main girl in the episode preview…so I’m sold.  I’m really glad I bought this.  Let’s be real, though, I really wanted to start it again just so I could watch the opening.  It does not disappoint.  And now it’s translated!  And I’ve been singing it wrong the entire time.  I won’t go much more into this since I did a whole review on this series (and that barely ever happens anymore), but it’s just as good the second time around.

Stats are the same as last week: currently watching 246 anime with 33 completed this year (re-watches don’t count).  My Sailor Moon Crystal episode review is coming, I didn’t forget about it.  As for next week…any suggestions?  My list is linked at the top of every Anime Mondays post so you can see what I’m in the middle of.  I’m kind of feeling the void since I finished off Sailor Moon S.  Help.

Anime Mondays #66 (Summer 2014 First Impressions!)

Oh god, my backlog challenge really took a hit this week.  I can’t stop watching new shows.  I know I’ll never have time to watch them weekly while they’re airing, and they are all going to require some marathoning down the line, but UGH.  I picked up so many.  For those of you new to this blog, this year I decided to attempt to cut down my currently watching list (because I never finish anything), and while I had cut it down by about ten shows, now it’s just up to…well.  You’ll see.  I am a failure.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

The Familiar of Zero – Episodes 10-13 (Completed!) The Familiar of Zero cover

See, I started off the week okay, and knocked out at least one show.  And, man, I loved this.  The Familiar of Zero wrapped up in a way where if there were to be more seasons (there are), they could continue the story, but if it stopped right there, I felt satisfied with the ending.  This show has such a simple premise, and nothing earth shattering really happens in it, but I just adored it.  Well…except for the part with the “dragon,” which was spoiled in the opening.  Once I figured that out and saw it would be the turning point of the entire series, I was really pissed they would put such a huge plot twist at the very beginning of the show.  Other than that, though, the characters were cute, Louise wasn’t annoying, and there were more cute moments than I could shake a stick at.  I hope Sentai decides to pony up, license the two middle seasons (I’m pretty sure they have the last one already), and dub them with the old cast.  The voice of Louise is going to be in the new Sailor Moon dub, so she’s still around, Sentai!  Make this happen!  I rated this 8/10 on MAL, but will probably wait a little while before I track down season 2.  I’ll hold out for that dub…unless Greg Ayres gets miscast as the lead and then I’ll just be pissed.

I, My, Me! Strawberry Eggs – Episodes 8-10 Strawberry Eggs Cover

Another disc of this came from my rental service, so I had to knock this one out, as well.  Ah, the days with only 3 episodes on a DVD…I do not miss you, at all.  Actually, this is another underrated show that I am really enjoying.  It’s a gender bender comedy, but these episodes erred more on the serious side of things where one girl professes her love to a boy, gets rejected, he professes to a different girl, gets rejected because SHE LOVES HER MALE TEACHER WHO IS DRESSING AS A WOMAN JUST TO TEACH AT THIS SCHOOL…yeah, shit just hit the fan.  It’s odd to think that all these heavy themes would be in a throwaway anime, especially because of the student/teacher relationships here.  I mean, the kids are supposed to be in middle school, but the teacher (who is a grown ass man) is both trying to aid the school in gender equality, but has a ridiculous crush on his 14 year old student.  He’s trying to do his job, and is doing it well…but then he’s going to ruin it all by falling in love with a child.  Is this still common in Japan?  I know it used to be, I mean, I watched the entire series of Maison Ikkoku, where the girl’s dead husband used to be her teacher, but here, Chris Hansen would be all over this shit, telling the teacher guy to take a seat.  I don’t know.  And it’s looking like it just may turn out that the teacher/student relationship is actually going to happen, and it’s just creepy.  But it shouldn’t be creepy…it’s just some random anime!  Anyway, I’ve rambled on for way too long about this.  The last disc is on its way to my house.  Hopefully, we will get a resolution next week.

Bakumatsu Rock – Episodes 1-2 Bakamatsu Rock cover

For some reason, this season I decided to pick up a lot of shows that are based on video games.  I have no sane idea why, as I don’t even play them; they just looked like the most interesting ones I could find on Crunchyroll.  Bakumatsu Rock has surprised me so far.  I don’t like the timeline issues they have going on (glowsticks in ancient Japan?  Okay…), but other than that, it’s a really amusing show about this dude who just wants to play his guitar and sing.  You can tell it’s based on a game, though, not only because of the awkwardly placed CGI during songs, but because there’s this thing called a Peace Soul, which looks like it’s supposed to be the little golden time thing in the game where if you tilt your guitar in the right direction you score more points.  When I did play video games, all I played was Rock Band, Guitar Hero, etc., so I know how this goes.  You get your perfect score, you sing a note during the time when the bar glows, then you get even more points.  Some people will have issues with this concept and the way that they actually inserted it into the anime, but I’m all about it.  Honestly, my opinions about the shows this season are pretty much the complete opposite of everything I’ve read/watched on youtube so far, but whatever.  I like this anime.  It will be one that I’ll watch weekly.  And there’s some crafty manservice thrown in there.  Winner.

Dramatical Murder coverDramatical Murder – Episode 1

I hadn’t even heard of this show and had absolutely no intention of watching it until I saw a summer preview youtube video where I found out a: it’s based on a video game, and b: it’s based on a video game where boys kiss a lot, so then, of course, I had to give it a shot just so I could understand people’s shit show reactions.  I’m not a huge yaoi fan, mainly because I haven’t seen anything except Gravitation that I especially liked (and even that wasn’t that good), but I’ll watch anything as long as it doesn’t have robots.  Anyway, so I caught the first episode…and I really hated it.  The character designs are ugly, the music is nothing special, and the plot only kicked in in like the last two minutes.  I did like the perso-com pets, though, and I’ll be interested to see if this turns into a trapped-in-a-video-game series like Sword Art Online, but it’s not something I will rush to watch every week; in fact, I probably won’t watch more of it until I get bored and need to check it off my list.

Shounen Hollywood – Episode 1 Shounen Hollywood cover

This show has everything going for it where I should like it: a bunch of guys, an entertainment setting, a BOYBAND…but I found the first episode to be ridiculously boring.  I don’t know if it’s the unengaging characters, or the color palette, or the lack of plot, but I just could not get into it.  I’ve already started referring to the guys by their horrible boyband taglines, though, so, while, yes, they are terrible, they sure work.  My favorite is the lucky boy, in case you were wondering.  The main dude doesn’t even know if he wants to be in this boyband, and his apathy is the most major turn-off here.  Hello, you’re in a BOYBAND.  Do you know how many people would want to trade places with you?  Hell, when I was in high school, all I ever dreamed of was becoming the next Britney Spears, and I even went to music school to chase the dream.  I just really want to punch the main guy in the face.  I hate the character designs, too.  I’m still on the fence over whether or not I’ll watch this weekly or just marathon it when it’s over, but…meh.  I’m disappointed.

Ao Haru Ride – Episode 1 Ao Haru Ride cover

Ah, here we go, something I will watch on a weekly basis.  In fact, as soon as this episode was over, I was crying over that I wouldn’t get another one until next week.  Oh my god, how I love my shoujo romance shows, especially ones that remind me of Kimi ni Todoke, which is one of my favorites of all time.  Ao Haru Ride is by the same people, and it shows, from the color palette to the character designs…except it’s BETTER because there aren’t as many deformed sequences.  I’ll admit, when I heard of the premise in the preview videos I watched, I couldn’t really understand it, but when I watched the show, it all made sense.  Our main girl loved the main guy in middle school, but she opened her mouth and said something stupid and wrecked the relationship before it could even begin, and then the dude moved away.  Then, she got teased so badly by her female classmates because she was “cute” (aka that’s girl code for slutty, when she’s not really a slut), and in high school, re-invented herself so she could have more female friends and not be outcast.  Meanwhile, main guy is now at her high school, and can’t understand how the girl could change herself so much just to fit in.  I get where she’s coming from, but I get what he’s saying, too, and this anime will not only be about the romance, but about the girl’s quest to find herself — to see if she can be happy and have friends without being fake.  This is going to be good.  My heart’s thumping already.

Kimi ni Todoke – Episodes 1-6 (Re-watch) Kimi no Todoke cover

Sure did have to start this series over again after I saw Ao Haru Ride.  And it’s just as good as I remember.  Sawako is SO CUTE, I can’t stand it, and her relationship with Kazehaya is the most adorable thing I have ever seen.  If you love shoujo romances and haven’t seen this, stop whatever you are doing and watch it right now.  You’ll thank me later.  I’ll wait.

Sword Art Online II – Episode 1 Sword Art Online 2 Cover

Yes, I fell asleep while watching this episode.  But…I fell asleep at the end, where the “action” was taking place.  If you don’t know/remember my feelings on the original Sword Art Online, I wrote a whole post on it, but the tl;dr version is that I liked it because of its romance aspects and not much else.  So, of course, the fact that more than half of the first episode was about Kirito and Asuna talking and holding hands on a bench made my heart all a-flutter.  Ugh.  I still love them.  Fuck the haters.  I really could give  a shit about him having to go back into a game and play with guns…I just want to see Kirito and Asuna do cute things.  I have no idea if I’m going to like the sequel at ALL, because from everything I’ve seen, Asuna isn’t even going to be in this…but I’ll keep watching.  I guess.  Maybe not weekly, though.

Say, “I Love You” – Episodes 10-13 (Re-watch) (Completed!) Say 'I love you' Cover

I finished my re-watch of this, and I’m sorry to say that I didn’t like it as much the second go round.  I’m guessing this is because I watched the dub.  Or it could be because I wasn’t surprised by anything that happened.  Or maybe because I hated all the supporting characters a lot more this time.  I don’t know.  But when I got to the end, I was left with an even worse taste in my mouth than the first time I watched, and I still believe this should have ended at episode 12, and 13 was a pointless throwaway.  My rating didn’t change — 8/10 — because it’s a good shoujo romance…it’s just not one of my favorites anymore…at least until I go back and watch it in Japanese again.

Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters – Episodes 82-90 Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters Cover

I’m almost caught up on purchasing this series (note to self: do an anime pickups post in the near future so you can put shit on the shelf), so I popped it in so I could have something on dubbed in the background while I did other things.  Shit is getting real, guys.  This Battle City Tournament is insane.  Marek stopped playing around and is now Marek, Joey won against an Egyptian God Card (what?!) and poor Mai is going to be a sacrificial lamb.  Again.  I love Mai.  She deserves to win at least one tournament.  I don’t get why the Egyptian God Cards are so dangerous, though.  I mean, it’s a card game.  Everyone thinks that by defeating Marek, they are saving the world, and that’s completely inflated.

Beyond the Boundary – Episodes 3-5 Beyond the Boundary Cover

Told you I would watch more of this.  This anime is still really good, but I’m finding myself getting confused with who all of the side characters are and what they are supposed to be doing.  Like this one girl with a giant weapon came out of nowhere, and I felt like I should have known who she was because she looked like someone else…but I wasn’t.  New character.  Ugh.  The main dude does have a really interesting power, though, you know…when he’s almost dying.  I’m finding it hard to watch more than one episode at a time, though…fucking moe.

Love Stage – Episode 1 Love Stage cover

I’ve heard from so many people that they hate the character designs in this show, the eyes are weird, etc….I love them.  I think they are unique, and I LOVE the eyes, especially of our main little otaku character Izumi.  He is ADORABLE.  I can’t even.  He hates his entertainment family and just wants to be a normal kid, and I can respect that.  Meanwhile, his parents are trying to push him into the family business.  He has the looks, but he doesn’t have the personality. If you don’t have the drive, it’s all good.  This is another boys making out with boys title, and it does absolutely nothing to cover that up.  The opening is amazing and gay and I love it.  In fact, there’s nothing I dislike about this show at all.  I can’t wait to see how it turns out, especially with the romance, and I’m just sad that it’s only going to be ten episodes or something.  Lame.  So lame.

Phi Brain Season 2 – Episodes 2-4 Phi Brain Season 2 Cover

It may not look like it since this post is getting to be ridiculously long, but I had trouble finding something I actually wanted to watch that wasn’t new this week.  Back to Phi Brain, a show I am watching only for the plot.  This anime is ugly.  I mean, ugly.  The characters are ugly, the colors are ugly, the backgrounds are ugly…but I watched one whole season of it, and when I started back up season 2, I can’t deny how much I loved this franchise.  It’s about this group of friends who solves these deathly puzzles.  I mean, it’s not like the plot is convoluted or anything…I don’t know.  I just really enjoy it.  It’s also fun to laugh at the cheesiness as each of the enemies are named after a card game.  I mean, some dude’s name is Freecell.  It went there.  This is the show that I’m about to go turn on after I finish writing this, and I have no shame in it.  Talk about a guilty pleasure anime, Jesus.

Naruto – Episodes 152-153 Naruto cover

Okay, so I don’t know what I did, or if the DVD came this way, or what, but episode 153 on my DVD is completely unplayable.  It’s like there are these gross scratches on the disc, and I can’t remember if it was like that or if they just magically appeared, but let’s just say that I actually watched this stupid filler episode about people being buried alive because I just can’t get it to play.  Rock Lee is back.  You can see me jumping for joy over here.  PS – that’s sarcasm.  I’m sure I didn’t miss much anyway.

Oh my god, this post.  Never again.  I’ll break my impressions posts into two next time.  Currently watching: 245 shows.  Definitely went over my magic number of 240.  I’ve completed 32 anime this year, though…re-watches don’t count.  See you next week when I promise not to ramble so much.  Seriously.

Pokemon – Episodes 19-26 Pokemon Cover

I’ll admit to popping in this DVD just because I saw some youtube videos talking about people’s favorite Pokemon.  And there are like…over 700 of them now.  I seriously only know of the first 150 so I was completely lost.  I need to catch up ASAP.  So, first season of Pokemon it is.  Now, I’m already one episode off because one of them was pretty much banned in the US and was only aired once because James from Team Rocket had fake boobs, so I’ll watch it on youtube to keep my episode count accurate.  I’m guessing that the MAL list is for the Japanese version and not the English one, so I’ll have to correct that…but I did watch eight episodes of this.  That happened.  And I can’t tell you anything specific that went down, other than the introduction of the psychic and ghost Pokemon.  Ash battles some gym leaders!  Ash gets some badges!  Brock acts like a creeper!  Misty hates boys!  The ghost episodes were funny, though.  That Haunter…what a little shit.  OH WAIT.  The episode where Ash lets his Butterfree go is in this group, too.  When I saw this on tv when I was a kid, I BAWLED.  This time, not so much.  Goodbye, Butterfree.  We hardly knew you.

Doujin Work – Episodes 11-12 Doujin Work Cover(Completed!)

Told you I would finish this anime.  Honestly, it wasn’t anything to write home about.  If I hadn’t paid a whopping $5 for this whole series, I probably never would have watched it.  Thanks, Crunchyroll mystery boxes!  Of course, you only gave me two out of three, so I had to get the other volume off amazon.  Bitches.  If you want to know the outcome of the live action series without actually watching it, the voice actresses finish their doujinshi and sell it to some creepy fan boys.  They get the tv and the PS3.  You’re welcome.  The live action segments are TERRIBLE.  The anime was cute, though, despite the power of friendship ending.  At least the heroine didn’t have any magical powers.  She still ended up not being able to draw.  I rated this 6/10 on MAL.

Ristorante Paradiso – Episodes 1-4 Ristorante Paradiso Cover

I watched one episode of this anime years ago, declared it boring, and decided that I didn’t have to watch any other episodes.  Then I got onto this reverse harem kick.  And while, technically, this anime is not a reverse harem at all, I bought it anyway when Right Stuf had their Nozomi sale.  Hey, I can’t turn down a gift with purchase, no matter how hideous the art style is.  Speaking of, the female characters are just ugly.  There is no saving them.  The male ones…well…they’re old.  “Distinguished.”  Gentlemen.  They look nicer.  The main premise is that this college girl goes to Italy to look for her mother and call her out for marrying a man who is not her father, and oops, he doesn’t know she even has a daughter.  He owns this restaurant where the entire staff is made up of gentlemen who wear glasses, and while she almost outs her mom straight off, she stays silent for awhile because of how charming the waiters are at this restaurant.  Seriously.  The college girl even ends up falling for one of them, who is as old as her real dad.  Yikes.  It’s a slice of life anime that is very calming, but not calming in the shitty way like Aria the Natural (yep, still hate it).  I’m interested to see whether or not she will ever call out her mom in front of her step-dad or if she’ll ever make Claudio fall in love with her.  Slice of life with a plot?  Who would have thought??  It’s just hard to watch more than a couple episodes in one sitting since it will put you to sleep.

Rose of Versailles – Episode 23 Rose of Versailles Cover

In an attempt to show my mother what I spend a ton of money on, I tried making her watch an episode of Rose of Versailles.  She’s a French teacher.  She’s all about Marie Antoinette.  Unfortunately, it was met with eye rolls from her before she fell right asleep, so see if I do anything nice for her ever again.  It wasn’t a boring episode, though.  That one evil chick finally got what was coming to her and got branded.  BITCH WENT DOWN.  But everyone still hates Marie because they’re jealous, obviously.  Not everyone can be as awesome as her.  They also brand her and Oscar as lesbians.  This can’t be good.  I swear, if they lynch Oscar, too, I’m going to be pissed with this whole show.

Akuma no Riddle – Episode 12 (Completed!) Akuma no Riddle Cover

God.  This ending.  THIS ENDING.  I can’t decide if I am mad at it or not.  Let’s be real, I love happy endings.  I love where all the characters get resolved and you see what happened to each of them in the future.  I just don’t know how this one would be even possible.  Last week, we found out Haru had this thing called a Primer power where she could make people do whatever she wanted.  Okay.  So, then Tokaku was supposedly about to stab her.  Turns out that wasn’t really Tokaku, but Nio disguised as her.  Tokaku is still in Camp Haru, no worries.  So Tokaku kills Nio.  And then Haru RUNS AT TOKAKU WITH A KNIFE.  WHAT???  Why???  This is the part I don’t understand.  Why would she try and kill someone who has protected her this whole time?  And then, (and here comes the worst part) TOKAKU STABS HARU.  SHE STABS THAT BITCH IN THE HEART.  WHY?  There is no reason for this.  They try to explain it with some bullshit, but honestly, I don’t understand the reasoning.  Can someone please tell me why Tokaku would kill Haru?  And then she immediately regrets it because when she was asked what her wish was, she said no one could grant it.  Commercial break.  Haru is alive.  Alive.  Bitch had titanium ribs (what?!) and survived getting stabbed so she graduates from Class Black.  They flash through all the assassins who are also still alive (how???) and end with Tokaku picking her up from graduation and they walk off together.  The end.  I can come up with two semi-plausible explanations for the ending: #1 – Tokaku’s wish was that Haru would graduate from Class Black, basically pulling a Madoka Magica where nobody dies and shit goes back to normal… or #2 – Haru used her Primer power to force herself to live, and then used it on everyone else to make sure they were all alive, as well.  Either way, the ending was a cop out.  I just want to know why Tokaku would stab Haru in the first place.  Still my favorite show of the season, I rated this 7/10 on MAL.  Yes, a point got taken off for the ending.  Duh.

Naruto – Episodes 149-151 Naruto cover

STUPID BUG ARC.  More Byakugans than I could shake a stick at.  Completely glad it’s over.

I am currently watching 241 anime and have completed 29 shows this year.  Making an effort people, making an effort.  I guess I’ll take this time to tell you I’ll be covering each episode of Sailor Moon Crystal from the summer season.  I haven’t had a chance to look at the chart, so I’ll leave that for next week, but from the videos I’ve seen, there are a good handful of shows I’d like to check out.  I can’t believe how quickly this season has gone.  Insanity.

Anime Mondays #62

Well guys, I am sick.  Sick, sick, sick.  And not in the head, I mean physically.  Unfortunately, it’s not like, sick where I can lie around and watch a bunch of shows because I can’t do anything else, it’s like, goddamn, I’m dizzy and want to be unconscious as much as possible sick.  Gross.  This post should be interesting.  While I still have my wits about me, don’t forget to enter my giveaway to win a free two month Crunchyroll Anime membership.  Just in case you were wondering, I am not sponsored by them in any way, I’m paying for this myself like a boss.

Attack on Titan – Episodes 6-9 (Re-watch) Attack on Titan Cover

I finished off one blu-ray to check for scratches!  Win!  There weren’t any.  So now I feel kind of cheated that I forced myself to plow through this so quickly when I didn’t have to.  The dub is still okay.  Armin is fantastic.  Not a fan of Mikasa.  Still on the fence about Eren.  Everyone else is everyone else.  Watching this for a second time and knowing what happens does take some of the awesome factor away, though.  I mean, when Eren popped out of that titan, the first time I was like HOLY SHIT, NO WAY WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?!!  And this time, I was just like, “oh yeah, there goes Eren popping out of  a titan.”  On the second watch, it does, however, make more sense.  Like, the flashbacks with the basement key and everything…and then leading up to the (stupid) ending of the series, if you think about key events that happened in these very first episodes, then that last three seconds feels more validated.  Still not that happy I paid $30 extra just to get a couple necklaces, though.  And I want an art box.  I know better for next time.

Soul Eater Not! – Episodes 6-7 Soul Eater Not Cover

I had every intention of catching up with this series this week and then life got in the way.  However, DEATH THE KID CAMEO!  Finally.  I only waited half the season for this.  And let me tell you, it is the best ten seconds of the entire series, even if he is jacked up in this hideous animation style.  Actually, Patty and Liz (Death the Kid’s weapons) surprisingly are featured cast members in these two episodes, and we get to learn a lot more of their back story.  Not that I’m particularly interested, but anything that gets me more of my anime boyfriend on screen, I’ll take.  Also, the main villain of this series finally shows herself and starts causing a whole ton of crazy shit.  Finally, things are getting good.  It only took HALF THE SERIES.  I’d really like to catch up and finish before I leave on vacation next weekend…but don’t hold your breath.

Bleach – Episodes 30-31 Bleach Title

Look, I told you I would watch more Bleach!  Thanks, illness insomnia for making this happen.  Ichigo unleashed some ridiculous power and kicked some major ass on this bad guy.  That was about it.  God, the pacing.  Help me.

Hikaru no Go – Episodes 13-16 Hikaru no Go Cover

Another disc down, another four episodes closer to finishing.  So Hikaru competes in his first Go tournament with Akira, and although he agrees that Sai should play him, because all Akira wants in the world is to take down Sai, Hikaru decides that he wants to see how much better he’s gotten by himself and plays Akira without Sai’s help.  Dumbass.  Of course, he loses, and Akira gets all pissed off at him because he underestimated his abilities and has wasted all this time in a middle school Go club when he could have been getting ready to go pro.  Okay then.  What a little bitch.  He won.  Quit crying about it.  After that, Hikaru decides to start playing Go online on a super old iMac, and lets Sai play all the people he wants.  Dangerous when it leads up to an in-person tournament.  THE DANGERS OF THE INTERNET PEOPLE.  Stalkers abound.  Can’t wait to see what happens when Hikaru gets found out.

Naruto – Episodes 142-148 Naruto cover

Well, I couldn’t remember what episode number I finished on and had to go look it up on Wikipedia, where I saw that THE ENTIRE REST OF THE SERIES IS FILLER.  I mean, I kind of knew it when they started bringing back old characters from episode 1 that I couldn’t remember to save the life of me, but oh my god.  That’s like…80+ episodes of filler.  I will not get to see if Sasuke comes back until I move on to the next series.  Fuck my life.  At least Ino’s back.  I love her.  This newest mission is about some bugs.  I don’t love that.  But…ugh…filler.  Is it even worth it to finish out the series?  Normally I don’t drop anything ever, but 80+ episodes of nothing happening might just kill me.

Doujin Work – Episodes 5-10 Doujin Work Cover

I will say with confidence that I will finish this series next week.  This group of episodes has turned pretty much into our main girl “fighting” her rival to see who can sell more doujinshi copies.  But the rival girl is drawing guy on guy action now, and, honestly, that’s where most of the jokes are coming from.  And they are hysterical.  Everyone else can take a backseat, rival girl is where it’s at.

Hunter x Hunter (2011) – Episode 1 Hunter x Hunter 2011 cover

I did not intend to start this series.  I have fallen asleep watching the first episode of this about 20 times, and that was what I was banking on when I turned it on again: nap time.  And, then, of course, I stayed awake for the whole thing.  Honestly, it’s not terrible.  And you know how I feel about my long-running shounen series.  It was just a matter of time before I picked this up, and now it’s all I want to watch.  Hunter x Hunter (the x is silent) is about this kid named Gon who wants to take the hunter exam so he can see why his father abandoned him to go do it.  Now, I don’t know if hunters hunt monsters, people, etc., but it sounds a lot like One Piece without the pirates.  Since pirates are the only reason I watch One Piece, I’m on the fence.  But the characters aren’t annoying me so far, and the premise is good, so…here we go.  I just wish I could track down the first volume of the original series because my OCD is hating me right now.

Akuma no Riddle – Episode 11 Akuma no Riddle Cover

God, I almost forgot to put this on here because I accidentally left it off my MAL.  Lame.  And not because it was a forgettable episode, just because I’m an idiot.  Let’s blame the cold medicine.  Well…we now know it all.  Haru has some sort of compulsion power where she can make people do whatever she wants, including not killing her and making Tokaku turn into her protector instead of her enemy…at least that’s what the lady in charge wants us to think.  I don’t know.  Does Haru really have this power?  Is it just her personality?  I guess what matters most is that now Tokaku feels really betrayed and has decided to slice Haru into pieces.  And I say, good on ya.  This series was supposed to be yuri, but I haven’t gotten a single hint of it, other than in the last few minutes of this episode, and that’s only if Tokaku feels so put out because she trusted Haru enough to fall in love with her…but I’m not even quite sure that happened.  I think it’s just a friendship.  I’m totally fine with either way, but there’s still a lot of elements in this anime that have been left unresolved, and that’s one of them.  Let’s see how next week ends up.  I’ll tell you now that this remains my favorite show of the season, though, and even if the ending is shit, that’s not going to change.

That’s it for this week.  Here’s the counts for those of you playing the home game.  I am currently watching 243 shows and have completed 27 anime this year.  God.  I need to get a handle on this backlog challenge ASAP.  Post will be late next week as I’ll be out of town, so it may have to be Anime Tuesdays, but I’ll get it up.  Time to see if I can knock anything out before my cough medicine knocks ME out.  Sounds good.

Anime Mondays #61

I have no idea where the spring season went.  Seriously.  No idea.  All of a sudden, it’s new chart time and in less than a month I’ll finally have my new Sailor Moon, and I AM NOT READY.  I saw the trailer.  I don’t know how I feel about it.  It looks so digitized and fake…but it’s Sailor Moon.  I hope it’s good.  It’s going to take a year for them to even air the series, but I just…I want it to be good.  I’m terrified.  Lots to talk about this week since I’m doing a three week backlog.  It’s time.  You will be rewarded at the end.

Red Data Girl – Episodes 1-2 Red Data Girl Cover

Wow, I just realized I’ve been away for so long that I couldn’t go into my MAL history because it doesn’t go back in time that far.  Instead, I had to go into my RSS feed…which I didn’t even know I had.  Creepy.  People can stalk me by anime episode.  Anyway, funimation.com put up the dub preview of Red Data Girl, so I had to watch it.  I actually pre-ordered this, but who knows when it will come.  I still haven’t gotten my gift set of Attack on Titan from Right Stuf yet because I ordered it with something that doesn’t come out until July.  Lame.  Well…it’s good in this case because I am utterly broke right now, but I digress.  Once I realized that Red Data Girl would probably turn into a reverse harem, of course I had to pick it back up immediately.  But it’s…weird.  It’s like this ghost of a princess from another world is going to take over this girl’s body, and all these dudes have to protect her because she’s the vessel…I don’t know how I feel about it.  But the dub is solid.  I had to re-watch the first episode because I didn’t remember what happened, and after watching it a second time, I still don’t really remember what happened.  So maybe it’s a forgettable reverse harem.  I’ll finish it when it comes in the mail.

Kaitou Saint Tail – Episode 6 Saint Tail Cover

A few weeks ago, I really wanted to knock a huge chunk of this show out…and then I watched one episode.  I don’t know if I got distracted or what, but this is the episode where the little cop dude gets a rival…and boy, is she annoying.  My quest to watch all the magical girl shows is really taking a beating right now.  Shit, I pretty much ruined my backlog challenge.  I mean, you’ll see from the stats at the end of the post, but I will need to finish a lot of my seasonal stuff in the next few weeks just to get back down to the count I started with.  I need to kick my ass back into gear.

Akuma no Riddle – Episodes 6-10 Akuma no Riddle Cover

This show got harder and harder for me to watch each episode because you know the assassins are going to “die,” and I love me some villains.  It’s like my favorite characters are getting knocked off one after the other, never to be seen again…or are they?  I know a lot of people didn’t like the Romeo and Juliet episode, but I loved it.  Yeah, the writing was sloppy and the end felt like a cop-out because Chitaru was my very favorite and she pretty much went and killed herself, but UGH.  I bought into it.  The pool episode was okay but rushed.  The ones with the gel nails girl were probably the best, if only because it took two episodes to finish her arc and I want more time with these characters.  And then the last girl…holy crap.  Haru completely did a 180, but I knew something was wrong with her, and she wasn’t this perfect little victim like everyone made her out to be.  We’re in the home stretch here, and while I know there probably won’t be a second season, I just hope we get to see some of the assassins again…and not in puppet form.

Soul Eater Not – Episode 5 Soul Eater Not Cover

I’m going to be completely honest here and tell you that I don’t remember anything about this episode at all, other than apparently I watched it.  Not a goddamned thing.  I’m going to finish this just to knock it out, but Soul Eater Not has NOT left a great impression on me.  Bad puns aside 😉

Doujin Work – Episodes 1-4Doujin Work Cover

This was one of the titles I received in my latest Crunchyroll mystery box, so I decided to go ahead and start it.  Doujin Work is a comedy about a girl who decides to begin drawing her own doujinshi for…some reason I can’t remember.  Not because she’s into it.  I think she needs money or something.  Anyway, she has no idea what she’s doing, but she has a bunch of friends who do and encourage her, and it’s pretty hysterical to watch this girl first freak out and then completely accept drawing questionable comics to cater to fanboys.  This show kind of reminds me of Hayate no Gotoku, but it’s easier to digest because the episodes are only 12 minutes long.  Unfortunately, they’re packaged with these live action segments that drag on and on while two of the voice actors from the show try to draw their own doujinshi so they can get themselves a big tv, a PS3, and pay for an after party for the anime’s staff.  I think I’ll skip the real people from now on and just stick to the anime — at least that is intentionally funny.

Kamigami no Asobi – Episodes 3-4 Kamigami no Asobi Cover

Back into reverse harem territory we go.  Are you ready for adventures with some hot guys?  Well…I guess I wouldn’t call them adventures, even if a lot of clothes do come off in these episodes.  Don’t get excited.  It’s a beach episode.  Basically, the main girl decides to teach all the gods about summer school and clubs, and she takes them to the beach and tries to help Hades with his astronomy club.  While Hades gets a little crack in his I HATE EVERYONE exterior, no one is really impressed by summer school, other than that the blond guy with short hair gets elected class president or something.  God, they’re all meshing together for me now and I’m referring to characters by hair color.  Thankfully, this is anime, and I can do that because having blue hair doesn’t mean you’re strange like it does in real life.

Naruto – Episodes 136-141 Naruto cover

One arc ends, and another begins.  Sakura proves (and to herself this time!) how fucking useless she is and decides she needs to make a change…right after someone is talking to the new Hokage about how each ninja squad should have a medical ninja.  Then, oh so conveniently, Sakura asks her if she can be her apprentice.  Did I mention new Hokage is the best medical ninja ever?  Yeah.  So now she can put her useless-ness to some kind of work, since she can’t fight to save her — or anyone else’s — life.  Also, we find out that Orochimaru has Sasuke and we probably won’t see him again for three years.  Seriously?  Does that mean he’s out until Shippuden??  I don’t know if I can take 80 episodes with no Sasuke.  That’s like blasphemy.

Hello Kitty’s Fairy Tale Theater – Episode 1 Hello Kitty Cover 1

I picked this up when Right Stuf was having a bargain bin sale.  It’s no secret that I have loved Hello Kitty since I was a little kid.  Hell, Hello Kitty’s Furry Tale Theater was my absolute favorite Saturday morning cartoon.  And, honestly, I hoped that that was what this series was, even though I was pretty positive the show I watched so long ago wasn’t anime…it’s not.  Completely different show.  Completely different vibe.  Not as good.  It’s also a compilation of a bunch of OVAs, which makes tracking it next to impossible.  The first episode was split into two parts, one of them the Hello Kitty version of Snow White, and the other The Boy Who Cried Wolf.  The latter was pretty stupid, and the dub was TERRIBLE.  I thought my ears were going to bleed from Badtz-Maru.  Snow White was okay, but the animation was stilted, and it’s yet another character Monica Rial ruins.  I wish more of her voices were like the one she did in Princess Nine, but I digress.  It’s good to see Hello Kitty in her natural Japanese habitat, but I liked my English adaptation of this better.  I hope it’s still on Hulu, but I have a feeling it’s not, since I know for sure it got taken down from Netflix.

Hikaru no Go – Episodes 1-12 Hikaru no Go Cover

My rental service and I are back on good terms, so I powered through three whole DVDs of this show because it’s extremely easy to watch dubbed.  With subtitles, I fell asleep.  The dub voices are so annoying that I am forced to stay awake and listen to these kids go at it board game style.  I guess Go isn’t the same as Othello, though, it’s way more complicated, and the show makes that clear.  The basic premise now is that Hikaru wants to play Go as much as possible, and he joins a Go competition team at his middle school.  His rival, Akira, who is skilled enough to go pro, takes a giant step down and plays for his middle school team for the sole reason of wanting to play against Hikaru as much as humanly possible.  But everybody hates Akira.  In fact, these kids start doing some Boys Over Flowers-esque shit just because he beats them at a board game.  I don’t remember if I have talked about the saga it was for me to finish that anime, but for a girl who loves her some melodrama, even I couldn’t take some of the shit that went down there.  Anyway, with the dub, I can power through this show and have two more discs on the way.  I’m going to be a Go master once I’m finished.  …yeah right.  I still don’t even understand how to play, and they have tutorial live action sequences after each episode.

Dragon Half – Episodes 1-2 (Completed!) Dragon Half Cover

Guys, I have real life friends who watch anime now.  I know!  I’m as shocked as you are.  So, after my birthday dinner at Medieval Times (I know how jealous you are that my life is completely awesome), I went back to their house slightly tipsy, and they introduced me to the hot mess that is Dragon Half.  I had never heard of this show in my life.  But the ending song is about like…eggs.  It’s NUTS.  Apparently, it’s one of my friends’ favorite shows because of how ridiculous it is, and when you’ve been drinking vodka all night, it’s even funnier.  However, it was SO BAD that they only made two episodes.  Hysteria.  Dragon Half is about this girl who is — gasp! — half dragon.  And there’s a boyband idol, some dudes trying to kidnap her to get to her parents, a tournament fighter…it’s just nuts.  It makes absolutely no sense.  If you have an hour to kill, grab yourself a bottle of Pinnacle and have a good time.  I rated this 5/10 on MAL.

Ben-to – Episodes 1-2 Ben-to Cover

Once again, another dub preview comes up on funimation, and I feel compelled to watch it immediately.  I actually tried to pick up Ben-to while it was airing, but I fell asleep during the first episode.  This time, I fell asleep during the second episode, but I was really wrecked.  It’s basically a show about people who have a fight club revolving around half price boxed lunches.  These bitches beat the shit out of each other to net that $5 beef bowl.  It’s so ludicrous that it works, and I don’t hate the characters, so that’s a plus.  The dub is passable, nothing special.  I won’t be buying this one, but I’ll watch the rest of it on the funimation streaming service.  I pay for that shit, you better believe I use it.

I My Me! Strawberry Eggs – Episodes 5-7 Strawberry Eggs Cover

This random blast from the past came to me along with my Hikaru no Go discs from my rental service, so in order to send it back, I watched it.  This is actually a cute little show.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a cute little stupid show, but it’s still cute.  This dude is really getting into being a cross-dressing teacher to help his students out.  In true trope fashion, these episodes contained a “health exam,” a camping trip and some kind of sports festival…I think.  I was multitasking while I watched this.  But I do remember it being funny.  The DVD menus are weird, though.  I can’t even explain them other than that they are ridiculously hard to navigate.

Attack on Titan – Episodes 1-5 (Re-watch) Attack on Titan Cover

While my gift copy of this show has not arrived at my house yet, the Collector’s Edition I bought from the Funimation store did come in.  Yes, I pretty much paid $30 extra for some necklaces and some pins.  They’re not even good quality and the chains are short as hell.  I would have been better off ordering from the etsy store where I got my first Attack on Titan necklace that gets compliments all the time.  Let me tell you, the packaging on this sucks.  It’s not in a box, the case doesn’t close, and you can’t take the book out of the package to look at it.  I heard reports that a lot of the discs were fucked up, so while I wasn’t planning on watching this now, I stuck the first Blu-ray in the player just to make sure it worked.  And while it works, the volume is so freaking low, I had to turn my tv all the way up just so I could hear the dialogue.  I normally watch it at like…11, and I had to turn this all the way up to 42.  NOT CUTE.  I’m not impressed with the release at all.  The picture looks amazing, but I thought they were going to re-animate some of the footage to not show still frames…yeah, still frames are still everywhere.  The dub commentary is a joke.  The director specifically pointed out that he spent a long time researching how to pronounce the German names of the characters so they wouldn’t be incorrect, and then NO ONE can say “Mikasa” correctly.  And while all the others characters are passable, Eren’s voice completely grates, even when he grows up.  Maybe it’ll get better in titan form.  One can only hope and dream.

Bleach – Episode 29 Bleach Title

Amazon Prime now has the dubbed version of this anime up to watch for free, I think up to season 5.  Now I have no reason not to knock some of this out…except that this episode was completely boring and it advanced the plot absolutely nowhere.  Come on, Bleach.  Get good already.

AND WE MADE IT!  Here’s a free Crunchyroll guest pass:

Y6V9FQZD9B9

I’ve completely screwed up my backlog challenge, but here are the counts.  I am currently watching 242 shows and have completed 27 shows this year.  Ugh.  I’ll try to knock one out for next week, but it’ll be a short one since I have concerts and a wedding to go to.  Life.  So, did you miss me?  Don’t forget to enter my birthday giveaway to win a free two month Crunchyroll anime membership!  Now you missed me because I’m giving you presents.  I see how this goes 😉

Anime Mondays #60

Damn, it has been one hell of a weekend.  A good one, but I am so ready for about six million naps.  May is always busy, and this year is no exception.  I feel like this would be a good point in time to let you guys know that Anime Mondays will be going on hiatus until June.  I’ll be out of town, out of the country, out of my mind, etc. for the next few weeks for a bunch of celebrations including my birthday. ( ~!!!)  Don’t worry, though, before I leave this time zone, I’ll leave you with a couple posts, along with another birthday giveaway like I had last year.  I’ll definitely be doing it differently, though, I just have to figure out how I want to go about it.  Speaking of a giveaway, this is a post with a surprise inside, so scroll down to get to the goodies.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Mahou no Star Magical Emi – Episode 1 Magical Emi Cover

Yeah, I know, what the hell am I doing watching another Studio Pierrot magical girl show when I just barely started Creamy Mami, and I’m not even sure that I like it?  Blame late night fansub random searching, okay.  When I checked my list to see what I had watched at the beginning of the week, I had forgotten entirely about this show, so take that for what you will.  Magical Emi is pretty much EXACTLY the same as Creamy Mami except for a few choice details, ie: the main character’s name, the type of magical friend animal she has, that her family is a group of magicians rather than owning a crepe truck…I seriously thought I was watching the same show at certain points in time.  Though, if I’m being honest, I’m more behind the concept of Magical Emi and liked it a little bit more than Creamy Mami just from what I’ve seen so far.  I’m more apt to believe that a girl from a family of magicians would be a magical girl than just some random literally picked off the street.  Now I just have to track down the rest of the episodes because I know where I was watching it only had up to episode 13…and it’s a long series.  Super.

Save Me! Lollipop – Episodes 11-13 (Completed!) Save Me Lollipop Cover

I told you I was going to knock out this show this week.  And for my efforts, I was treated to another “power of friendship” ending.  Super.  If you know anything at all in Anime Mondays history, you will know how much I loathe the power of friendship ending.  It’s one of the biggest cop outs of all time.  It’s just as bad as the “to be continued…” ending, which I also hate.  Anyway, despite the shit ending, Save Me! Lollipop wasn’t that bad of a shoujo anime.  I’m sure it was something Funimation had to take in a package deal because there’s no way anyone would voluntarily license this AND dub it, but I liked it.  The main characters were cute, the plot was pretty adorable, and Brittany Karbowski is always a welcome addition to any dub.  However, there were way too many side characters/villains to keep track of, and the plot completed got turned on its side in the last two episodes, bringing out this super evil thing that was never even mentioned up until then, which threw me for a loop. If you want to kill three hours watching a mindless show, you could do worse, but I won’t highly recommend it as something YOU MUST WATCH RIGHT NOW OH MY GOD.  I rated this 5/10 on MAL, if you’re jonesing for your animated candy fix.

Golden Time – Episodes 9-24 (Completed!) Golden Time Cover

So happy I finally finished Golden Time, not because I wanted to mark it off, but because I unashamedly enjoyed it.  Once I started watching it, it was pretty much the only thing I watched all week.  When I started this as it was airing, I said it would probably be one of my favorite shows of the season, and I stand by that statement.  Golden Time is something special, not because of the “supernatural” plot elements (because, really, I could have done without them), but because of the relationships portrayed.  Once Banri’s amnesia started to hit full force, the show almost went downhill for me, but I love Koko, so I carried on.  I’m one of those people who will do anything in her power to make people happy, so when I saw her faking her way through dinner and wearing a cute apron just to get a smile of approval from Banri, all whilst thinking that her relationship could dissolve at any moment, I was like…yup.  Been there.  It’s hard to be secure in something that could change just because of someone else’s whim, where you really can’t control it.  I wanted them to succeed as a couple so badly, and their relationship did not disappoint.  The side characters, the amnesia, whatever other plot points happened didn’t leave me with much of an impact, so meh on that.  Guys, but let’s talk about those openings and endings.  That second opening…that song haunted me ALL WEEK.  It’s so weird because the first time I heard it, I was like, what the fuck is this, how could you replace the perfectly girly first opening with this cacophony of a song, but once I realized, hey, it goes with the plot…it was perfect.  Also, Koko running up the stairs with the stars falling was one of the greatest images ever, so someone must gif that immediately.  I looked through as far as I could go with the Golden Time tag on tumblr and came up with nothing.  Also, Nana.  NANA.  So blatant an homage.  It made me very happy.  I’ve really been into these shoujo drama/romances lately, hence, I really liked Golden Time.  I rated it 8/10 on MAL, and while it’s no Lovely Complex, if you like the genre, I’d definitely check it out.

Naruto – Episodes 130-135 Naruto cover

Well, Naruto and Sasuke had their death match, and you know who won?  NOBODY.  What a fucking waste of time.  Sasuke had to kill Naruto because he’s his “best friend” and he won’t get this advanced sharingan power unless he commits murder, so that was his motivation.  Apparently, that’s been his motivation the entire time.  What an asshole.  I’m officially off Team Sasuke now.  At least with Gaara, you knew he was a villain right off, but this feels so forced to me.  Naruto gets the shit kicked out of him but doesn’t die (can he EVER die?  It seems like he gets revived more than a video game character), so I guess technically he loses to Sasuke…but still.  At least all the other little ninja are alive.  CHOJI <3.  There was my little fangirl moment.  I don’t know…I’m pissed off.  The main goal was to get Sasuke back, and it really doesn’t seem like he should be back if he’s just a little asshole.  Give him his three years to destroy the world/be destroyed.  I’m over it.

And that’s the end.  For your efforts in wading through my love of all things Kaga Koko, here’s a free crunchyroll guest pass:

For those of you playing the home game, I am currently watching 238 anime and have completed 26 shows this year.  Knocked one off the list, YES.  I don’t know what kind of time I’ll have to watch a lot of things for the rest of the month, but taking a quick look at the list…maybe it’s time I finish Nodame Cantabile…I would start Toradora, but I’m waiting for the dub set to come out.  Hello, pre-order.  Also, if anyone has any suggestions as to what to put in this year’s giveaway, please let me know via comments, email, twitter, etc.  I want to do more than just some paid Crunchyroll time.  I’ll be baaaack.  Don’t miss me too much.
