Anime Mondays #68

What’s been happening this week, you guys?  I had to shell out a shit ton of money to fix my car.  My poor baby.  The air conditioning was broken, so I took it in, and the technician discovered ten other things wrong with it.  It’s just an adorable PT Cruiser, how could things have gone so awry??  It’s putting a cramp in my style, that’s for sure.  I have some Right Stuf orders I need to make (big ones), and that’s not going to happen anytime in my near future.  Gee, guess I’ll be forced to watch my backlog.  Or, you know, Crunchyroll.  Probably Crunchyroll.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Yu Gi Oh Duel Monsters – Episodes 108-128 Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters Cover

I have no shame.  I watched the entire “Noah” arc of this series.  All of it.  Pretty much in a day.  And I am stupidly confused by it…not by any of the plot/character elements, but by the fact that I was sure Noah was Kaiba’s brother and that his step-dad was pulling the strings the whole time the first time he came on screen.  And this was supposed to be a big reveal??  The bigger reveal would have been to tell us what kind of accident he had to pretty much kill himself.  And how the step-dad’s disappearance factored into all of this.  Did he injure his own son and then feel guilt about it so many years later and want to injure himself?  Goddamned censoring.  So that happened.  And in the last episode of this arc, Kaiba said what I had been feeling the whole time.  I’m paraphrasing, but it goes a little something like this: that was a completely pointless diversion from the main path, NOW LET’S GET BACK TO THE BATTLE CITY FINALS.  A fucking men.  The coolest part of this is the four way duel that goes down to see who will battle against each other because all the strategies make zero sense, but everyone thinks they are the smartest in the world for spewing some words out of their mouths.  There cannot be a strategy in a four way duel because everyone is going to fuck up your strategy.  Although, Joey does grow some balls and tells Yugi to stop helping him…but then the idiot decides to battle Marek.  Stupid.  He loses, but has another one of those technicality TKO’s where he doesn’t lose by points but because he can’t get up off the ground.  And that’s where I stopped because I couldn’t take anymore of the made-up rules.  Is this less confusing in Japanese?  Can I even track down some fansubs?

A-Channel – Episode 2 A-Channel Cover

Yeah, the second episode wasn’t any better than the first.  Everyone gets caught in a rainstorm and then they all get in the bath.  I’ll never understand why Japanese people all like to jump in the tub together.  When I’m in the bath/shower, it’s the most peaceful time of my day since I don’t have to deal with anyone and can have some me time.  I do not like this show.  I will struggle to finish it because it’s a rental.

Ao Haru Ride – Episode 3 Ao Haru Ride cover

My Crunchyroll Roku channel would not play this episode, so I was forced to watch it on my laptop.  Actually, my Crunchyroll Roku channel has not been playing a lot of shit lately.  What is up with that?  I pay for this.  And I know I have to watch it in shit quality because it doesn’t support 1080p for some unknown reason, but goddamn, when I want to watch my shoujo romances, they had better work, or I am going to shounen-ly punch somebody in the face.  Hear that, Crunchyroll??  Anyway, this episode was cute.  I almost, ALMOST thought they were going to kiss, but then they didn’t and I’m okay with that.  And now, we are going to get a plot with other people, since they all joined the student council together.  I guess that’s fine.  I’m glad the main girl will make some real friends.  I’d rather this just be a romance, though.

One Piece – Episodes 79-80 One Piece Cover

I have put Naruto on an indefinite hiatus to try and tackle some of another long-running shounen that I feel I’ll never catch up on: enter One Piece.  I have the re-released collections from Funimation, and I’m up to 9 with 10 on pre-order, but I’m watching Collection 4.  Yeah.  Trying hard to catch up.  It doesn’t help that I’ve tried to watch episode 81 at least four times, and I’ve fallen asleep every time.  Ugh.  Anyway, so when we last left off, Nami was sick, and the guys were trying to sail somewhere to find her a doctor.  Well, they come upon this winter island, where they almost get shot before they get off the boat.  Luckily, there’s a good Samaritan in his winter coat, and he takes the gang onto the island to try and help Nami.  However, the only doctor is really a witch, and Luffy and Sanji have to carry the sick girl up a giant mountain to get to her.  Yeah, that’s happening.  There are giant killer rabbits, though, so life is good.  The giant duck is the best part of this series.  I’ll be sad if he ever leaves.

Ranma 1/2 – Episodes 2-3 Ranma Cover(Re-watch)

I was watching something…and got the urge to pop in Ranma for a couple of episodes.  Clearly, it wasn’t any actual anime episodes, probably something on youtube.  I’m going through the new Blu-ray release for these.  Remember last time when I swore there were episode previews and I couldn’t find them?  Yeah, you can’t chapter skip past the ending theme.  They are there.  I’m a moron.  Akane takes Ranma to school, and he is shocked to find out she has to knock down a gauntlet of guys who want to fight her to be able to date her every morning.  What??  Yeah, that is thanks to her senpai (whose name is escaping me but he calls himself Blue Thunder) who is also in love with her and doesn’t want anyone to touch her, so he issued that challenge.  Asshole.  He fights Ranma, but they fall in the pool, and now he’s in love with Girl Type Ranma.  Suck on that, Akane.  Say what you want, but I really like this show.  It’s definitely a classic, and I think everyone should check out at least a few episodes.  Just…not in English.

Love Stage – Episode 3 Love Stage cover

OH MY GOD.  There is a scene in this episode where I about lost my shit.  It’s pretty tastefully done, all outlines and glitter everywhere, but holy crap.  Never before have I seen something in an anime on Crunchyroll.  To recap, last week I wondered how the two dudes were going to fall in love with each other since neither one appears to be gay.  Apparently, it’s just immediate, animal attraction.  I’ll buy it.  You know why?  Because both of them are traumatized after they kiss again, and neither one knows what to do with himself.  Those poor dudes.  They are just so clueless.  I really hope in the next episode they both attempt to come to terms with their sexualities (or at least the fact that they are attracted to each other, gender be damned).  A lot of people wrote this series off because the character designs aren’t the norm, or because it’s yaoi, but Love Stage is really solid so far.  It’s my second favorite show of the season.  You go boys, with your bad selves.

Phi-Brain Season 2: Episodes 13-15 Phi Brain Season 2 Cover

I would have watched more of this, but, you know, Crunchyroll on Roku doesn’t want to play this, either.  I even succumbed to watching an episode on Hulu.  WITH COMMERCIALS.  The student council president fights Kaito with the fake ring and loses…and then he disappears.  Great.  Now I will be missing his stupid apple juice jokes for the rest of the season.  And then the Orpheus Order gets a new leader who is a real dickbag, and just starts trying to kill Kaito again.  I’d rather have Freecell, who just wants to play with him.  And then…and then…there’s an episode where they give a dog a replica ring.  Let me repeat.  THEY GIVE A DOG A REPLICA RING.  This show is fucking camp.  I can’t take it seriously.  I love it.

Bakamatsu Rock – Episode 4 Bakamatsu Rock cover

Speaking of camp, this entire episode takes place in a bath house.  Elephant noises abound!!  Oh god, I can’t take it.  You know how the stupid bath house/spa episodes always show girls running around naked?  Well, now it’s boys running around naked.  And the female anime watchers rejoice.  It’s hysterical, though, like, the guys hold a concert in an all-male bath house, and they are halfway into their first song when hundreds of dudes whip off their towels and start swinging them over their heads.  So they are legit about to start a naked mosh pit.  The fucking best ever.

Terror in Resonance – Episode 3 Terror in Resonance cover

I am starting to lose faith in this show.  There is some big plot element that’s going to be revealed, and it’s going to be something completely stupid.  I can feel it.  Also, it’s turning into a police drama, and that shit is boring.  But, it looks like 9 and 12 were in an orphanage?  Or possibly a little kid asylum?  There was some kind of bomb scare years and years ago, and while they were trying to get out, a lot of kids died.  Like, they couldn’t save them all.  So that looks like it’s going to be the reason why they are bombing seemingly random places that have to do with police and/or government.  Oh, and Lisa runs away from her crazy mom.  I really hope I’m wrong about this show, that the characters’ motivations will be something that’s relevant, but…eh.  I mean, I watch Phi-Brain.

Sailor Moon S – Episodes 32-38 (Completed!) (Re-watch) Sailor Moon S Cover

Watching the last six episodes of this series reminded me how much I love the Sailor Moon franchise as a whole, and why S will forever be the best series.  First of all, you have villains that do actual damage.  Mistress 9 and Pharaoh 90 actually BLEW UP A SCHOOL.  There’s wreckage and everything.  Secondly, they destroyed the Holy Grail and fucked up Sailor Moon to the fact that she had to force her heart crystal to pop out of her body in order to defeat them.  And Sailor Saturn had to kill herself just to fight off the evil.  Yeah, she gets re-incarnated, but still.  There are also more witches who get killed off in one episode apiece.  What??  I mean, shit is getting real.  And at the very end, Uranus and Neptune call out Sailor Moon on how unworthy she is to be the Messiah because she tried to save Hotaru instead of the world.  Ugh.  It’s SO GOOD.  I cried.  A lot.  Unfortunately, this marks a turning point for Uranus and Neptune who peace out of town after getting bitch slapped by Sailor Moon’s heart crystal power and don’t appear for the entirety of the next series.  Hence, I will be re-watching Sailor Moon Super S for continuity’s sake only.  This is just the best the Sailor Moon franchise has to offer because Sailor Moon is best when it’s serious.  I rated this 10/10 on MAL, and while I’m not positive it deserves it for all the filler, this is a show I will watch again and again.  I can’t wait until it comes out on Blu-ray.  And god, I hope they don’t fuck up the dub voices for Uranus and Neptune.  I don’t know who could do them justice.

Sailor Moon S Movie – (Completed!) (Re-watch) Sailor Moon S Movie Cover

I think I’ve seen this movie at least 50 times.  This might be showing my age a bit, but when I was a kid, I begged my parents to let me go to the post office to get a money order so I could order some VKLL fansubs.  Remember those?  Oh man.  This was the first glimpse I ever received of the Outer Senshi that wasn’t on a tiny .avi file on my computer.  And I loved them.  I haven’t seen this movie in years, though, since I got back into anime, and the whole Kaguya Hime thing?  It makes SO much more sense, now that I get the context.  I bought this Pioneer dvd off amazon or ebay or something, and it’s…interesting.  The transfer is terrible.  It looks just like my VHS tape did.  But the bonus features…man.  Shit is spelled incorrectly, but you can watch all the transformations and attacks just by pushing a button, and if I would have had this back in the day, maybe I wouldn’t have worn out my tape.  It also lets you jump to the infamous “Tuxedo Mask transformation,” and I did laugh out loud because I had forgotten about it.  Also, it recognizes — in print — that Haruka and Michiru are in love with each other.  No more cousins!  Take that, English dub!  The movie is cute.  It’s nothing special plot wise.  But this meant the world to me when I was a kid, and it will always be one of my favorites.  (In case you were wondering, the Sailor Moon movies do go down in quality the later they get.  Like, R is my favorite, then S, then Super S).  I rated this 8/10 on MAL, and I’ll stick by it.

Btooom! – Episode 1 (Re-watch) Btooom! Cover

I purchased this at the beginning of the month, and I have been holding off re-watching it for the sole fact that I didn’t want to add anything new to my list.  But yesterday, I said fuck it, and popped that sucker in.  The dub.  Oh man, the dub.  This new-ish guy who does the main dude…he is AWESOME.  Give him more work!  And then, my precious Brittney Karbowski is the main girl in the episode preview…so I’m sold.  I’m really glad I bought this.  Let’s be real, though, I really wanted to start it again just so I could watch the opening.  It does not disappoint.  And now it’s translated!  And I’ve been singing it wrong the entire time.  I won’t go much more into this since I did a whole review on this series (and that barely ever happens anymore), but it’s just as good the second time around.

Stats are the same as last week: currently watching 246 anime with 33 completed this year (re-watches don’t count).  My Sailor Moon Crystal episode review is coming, I didn’t forget about it.  As for next week…any suggestions?  My list is linked at the top of every Anime Mondays post so you can see what I’m in the middle of.  I’m kind of feeling the void since I finished off Sailor Moon S.  Help.

Anime Mondays #65

This week has been a challenge.  Let me tell you guys, I’ve had no power since Monday night after a bunch of tornadoes ripped through our area.  It finally came back on Friday, but I was going insane.  No air conditioning.  No anime (almost).  I felt like a farmer or something, waking up when the sun came up only because I could have light to do normal things like not shower in the dark and attempt to make my hair not look horrific because I couldn’t turn on a blow dryer.  I rely on technology way too much, but, you know what?  So does everyone else.  And I learned I could charge my phone in very unusual places.  Anyway, I did manage to knock a show off the list this week because once I got internet again, I binge watched all over the place.  And, and!  This is a post with a prize inside.  You know the drill.  Also, I finished the newest season of Orange is the New Black, and damn.  That ending.  I was very pleasantly surprised.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Red Data Girl – Episodes 4-6 Red Data Girl Cover

I have absolutely no idea what is going on in this anime.  I mean, none, other than it’s some kind of Japanese spirit-apalooza, trying to lump as many different kinds of ghosts and demons in there that they can.  I mean, I know a little bit about various spirits thanks to watching other anime, but they did a much better job of explaining the details so I could understand that, oh yes, this is a fox spirit, and this one lives in the water, and this one will kill you while you sleep.  Not Red Data Girl.  Oh, no, it’s like I should just know them automatically and roll with it, but that is not the case!  I don’t want to have to wikipedia a bunch of crap on my iphone just to figure out what’s happening.  Also, it’s not a scary or action-oriented show about spirits, they all like…attend this school for endangered spirits.  It’s stupid.  I liked this show more when the preview tricked me into thinking it was a reverse harem.  PS – it’s not.  At all.  Don’t get your hopes up.

Soul Eater Not! – Episodes 8-12 (Completed!) Soul Eater Not Cover

If Soul Eater Not! had spent the whole series leading up to what happened in the final three episodes, it would have been a much better anime.  All the slice of life stuff was completely unnecessary.  The last three episodes were action, action, action, and that’s where the Soul Eater franchise belongs, not making stupid boob jokes every four minutes or trying too hard to produce some yuri undertones.  Episodes 8 and 9 were just atrocious.  They were filler and throwaway, and I had to force myself to continue on, just because I knew I wanted to knock this series off my list this week.  But the last three…epic.  The dark haired girl learns how to be a proper weapon, she “chooses” a partner, there’s a witch battle, and, most importantly, there’s another Death the Kid cameo.  Swoon.  It’s a real shame that they wasted 3/4 of a series, though.  An anime should not have to have a shit build-up just to blow it out of the park at the end.  I know a lot of people dropped this show early on, and maybe this was our payoff for sticking through, but man…don’t do that.  I rated this show 6/10 on MAL, and, yes, I added two points for the last arc.  Watch this if you really, really like Soul Eater, otherwise, I’d pass.

Beyond the Boundary – Episode 2 Beyond the Boundary Cover

This show was recommended to me in my birthday giveaway, so I thought I’d give it another try.  I had watched the first episode when it was airing, but the comedic/moe elements really threw me off.  Taking a second look at it, I was ready to watch more than one episode…but then my power went out.  Bastards.  I like the darker tone that Beyond the Boundary has going for it, and that it actually has semblance of a plot, other than like, K-On!, which is what the anime reminds me of.  Same studio.  That’s why.  It also reminds me of a Deadman Wonderland Lite, but that’s just because the main girl gets her power from spilling her blood.  And she’s anemic.  Oh my god, the moe.  However, she was less annoying in episode 2 than I remembered her being in the first episode.  I will definitely be continuing this in the near, as opposed to the far, future.  Thanks for the rec!  You picked a winner!

Hikaru no Go – Episodes 17-20 Hikaru no Go Cover

In case you were wondering exactly what I was watching when my power flipped off, this was it.  And right in the middle of an episode, too, so I had to finish off the disc over the weekend.  LAME.  So, we’re back in this internet gaming thing, where Sai is playing games and kicking ass, and people in these amateur tournaments are like, “Who is this Sai?  WE HAVE TO KNOW!” and they go around like the Spanish Inquisition asking anyone if they have any information.  Um…why didn’t they just trace the IP address?  I’m sure that information was available.  Play less Go, hack some more.  Anyway, so Akira ends up playing Sai, and he thinks it’s Hikaru, but he’s not positive because Hikaru sucked a lot in their tournament match.  Little did he know that it just wasn’t Sai cheating for Hikaru in that match, but I digress.  Hikaru and Sai decide to stop playing online because he doesn’t want to be found out, and then Hikaru jumps onto the professional bandwagon because he wants to compete with Akira.  What?  Turns out he can’t go pro unless a: he passes a test, and 2: he quits his middle school team.  What will he do?  Will he abandon his friends for his selfish desires???  Gasp!  Yeah, I don’t know the answer because that’s where the disc ended.

Karneval – Episodes 1-3 Karneval Title

Okay, I swear to god, I have seen the first episode of this anime about 30 times.  Why?  Because I can never remember what happens in it when I want to go past it, and then I will fall asleep during episode 2.  Not kidding.  I used up a good chunk of my laptop battery trying to keep from going nuts at night when I had no power watching this, and every time, at episode 2, I’d knock myself out and wake up hearing that “Be My Reason~” theme song.  I’d rewind, try to start it over, and promptly fell asleep again.  Ugh.  Karneval, why are you so boring???  The character design in this show is what drew me to it, and the colors are outstanding.  I’m like a kid staring at rainbows just going, “ooh…pretty!”  I BOUGHT this.  I mean, the art box, come on.  I just can’t get into whatever plot it may or may not have at all.  I finally watched up to episode 4 just because I was doing my nails while my laptop was on, and I couldn’t fall asleep, but ugh.  Something about a rainbow forest and some animals…I don’t know.  Greg Ayres is severely miscast in this dub (he should have played the white haired kid), but the dude who plays Yogi (the blond guy) is fantastic.  Hold on, I’m gonna look him up.  Christopher Bevins.  Marry me.

Say, “I Love You” – Episodes 8-9 (Re-watch) Say 'I love you' Cover

Okay, the dude who loves The Land is amazing.  Sorry, I love him and his blond fauxhawk a lot.  Not sorry.  And his English dub voice actor is hysterical.  Hold on, I’m gonna look him up, too.  Andrew Love.  You can marry me, as well.  Polygamy for the win.  Other than that, these were the huge communication misunderstanding episodes, and other than the last episode of the series, they are clearly not my favorite.

Sailor Moon Crystal – Episode 1 Sailor Moon Crystal Cover

I pretty much said all I needed to say about this episode in the post right underneath this one (which I will do each time a new episode airs, yay!), but I did end up watching this twice, and I liked it better the second time around.  The silhouette dream sequences are still the best part of the anime, though.

Sailor Moon S – Episodes 29-31 Sailor Moon S Cover

Of course, as soon as I was finished re-watching new Sailor Moon, I wanted to re-watch old Sailor Moon, and from here until the end of the series is where shit gets real.  It’s like plot, plot, plot all the time, and there are Outer Senshi everywhere, and I LOVE IT.  It’s almost as good as the arc in the middle of the series where the talismans pop out of Uranus and Neptune, but not quite.  It makes me nervous about their new English dub voices because Viz really fucked up casting Stephanie Sheh as Sailor Moon (ugh, she ruins about as much as Monica Rial does), and, while I am all for Cristina Vee (aka Mio from K-On!) playing Sailor Mars, I don’t know about the rest.  Todd Haberkorn.  Why…anyway, I’ll just watch this subtitled.  Not like I haven’t a million times already.

The Familiar of Zero – Episodes 1-9 The Familiar of Zero cover

Episodes 1-8 of this were actually a re-watch, as I have seen them all before subtitled.  But Right Stuf had a Sentai sale…and you know where I’m going with this.  Honestly, I purchased this on blu-ray from Deep Discount DVD because it was cheaper and I haven’t had issues with them in the past like every other person in the universe.  So, I watched more than half the series in one go.  Dubbed.  This is a Geneon dub, and it is GOOD.  It took me a little while to realize Saito wasn’t actually 30 years old, but once I got past that, the dub became a winner.  For the newbies, The Familiar of Zero is about a magical boarding school (think Harry Potter), but way less serious.  Our main girl, Louise, is terrible at magic.  Awful.  Everyone in her class has to pick a familiar, and she conjures up this peasant human boy from Earth while everyone else gets dragons and shit.  Poor girl can’t catch a break.  So, while all the rest of the familiars are flying around and spitting fire, Louise’s is washing her underwear.  Yeah, there are cheap jokes.  Yes, there is a harem vibe in here.  But I think this show is hysterical.  Hell, it has like, four seasons, so it must be doing something right.  I’m surprised it’s not more popular in America because it really has everything going for it, and it looks amazing on blu-ray, even though it’s ten years old.  Pick this one up if you can, it’s not out of print anymore, people.  I got my copy for $30.

Damn, that seemed like a lot for a girl with no power all week.  Here’s a free Crunchyroll guest pass:

So, I’m still currently watching 241 series, with 31 completed shows this year.  Expect both numbers to go up next week, as I will be doing my summer season first impressions.  I’m looking at that show about the rock band, the one that has the word “Hollywood” in the title, the terrorist show, and…Tokyo Ghoul.  Along with anything else that has a pretty title graphic on Crunchyroll.  I’m so easy.

Edited after the fact: I forgot that I also re-watched the rest of the first set of Dear Brother… and let me just tell you that the transfer looks fantastic.  If you can pick up these sets at Right Stuf or something, DO IT.  You won’t be disappointed.

Anime Mondays #59

So, I watched Attack on Titan on Toonami last night…I mean, that should be all I need to say, right?  Maybe it’s because I haven’t watched anime on television since I was in the hospital for an extended period of time and couldn’t sleep because I was getting surgery the next day so I stayed up all night in a morphine-induced haze while watching reruns of Full Metal Alchemist and Inuyasha, but it seems to me that Cartoon Network could have handled their editing a little better.  I mean, they cut the opening and ending to pieces, which are the best parts of the show, and had a really awkward commercial break segway.  As for the dub…scouts?  What is this, Sailor Moon?  Say “Survey Corps,” it’s not hard, and most people who own a dictionary will get it.  Also, Baby Eren’s voice is ANNOYING, and it hurts my heart that nobody can pronounce “Mikasa” correctly.  I mean, all you have to do is listen to the Japanese version once.  It’s not that difficult.  The best voice acting was done by Eren’s mom, and well, we won’t be hearing her again anytime soon.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Naruto – Episodes 115-129 Naruto cover

Clearly, I really got into Naruto this week, at least, until they started the extended Sasuke flashback episodes and I switched to something else.  I hate flashbacks.  I hate extended flashbacks even more.  But you guys…GAARA IS BACK!!!  And apparently, he’s a good guy??  I don’t know how I feel about this.  I mean, obviously I’m a happy fangirl because he’s back and I can hear his wheezing voice again, but he was such a good villain…and I’m in the camp where bad guys should be bad guys.  If they turn good, then they’re either trying to trick you or they’re doing it wrong.  But all the super ninja got defeated and now it’s Naruto vs. Sasuke again, who is all power-hungry and makes me want to punch him in the face.  God, just go home, Sasuke.  Are you too good for your home??  ANSWER ME!  (Bonus points to whoever got that awesome movie reference.)

Soul Eater Not! – Episode 4 Soul Eater Not Cover

Thankfully, this episode had another Maka cameo.  Unfortunately, it was a stupid one.  Stop teasing me, Soul Eater Not!.  Just give me a good three minutes with the old gang or something, and don’t have them all act stupid.  This episode was more about the protector guys than anybody else.  And although we still don’t know exactly what they are protecting the three girls from or why, at least we now know they have actual personalities.  I’m digging the dark haired dude.  I can’t tell if he actually likes the weapon girl or if he just takes his job really seriously, but that’s a good thing.  Keeps me guessing.  In case you couldn’t tell, this episode was also about forced romances.  Nothing to really write home about.

White Album – Episodes 4-13 (Completed!) White Album Cover

I knew this week that I had to knock out another show, and it came down to either White Album or Anohana and this one won out.  I immediately regretted this decision.  Okay, for all you people who say School Days is the biggest piece of shit out there, I implore you to watch the first season of White Album.  Talk about a male protagonist whose head needs to be cut off…ugh.  Firstly, it’s painfully obvious that this show is based off a visual novel because half the shots are of these girls all talking to the camera from the perspective where the viewer is the asshole guy.  There are also all these weird captions that come up on the screen every now and then that are supposed to show his inner thoughts, or whatever, mostly centered around, “this girl is a goddess,” or “is this girl a goddess?” or “goddess of the day.”  It’s really annoying and also proves my point as to what a scumbag this Fuji dude is.  He’s supposed to be in a relationship with this girl named Yuki who is an upcoming idol.  He calls her his girlfriend, they kiss, etc. etc., which is all well and good.  Except, then, all these girls start throwing themselves at him for absolutely no reason.  He’s a lazy dick and doesn’t do much and is in no way attractive, but at least five other women are in love with him.  Okay, it’s a video game…I can buy it.  But then, he cheats on Yuki SO MANY TIMES that I cannot keep count.  He tells his senior that he loves her after letting her stay at his dad’s house for weeks so they can make some costumes for a stupid play.  He has sex with Yuki’s manager, even though he KNOWS she is only using what tiny bits of sex appeal she has to keep him away from Yuki, and Fuji even states that her lips are cold and dead like doll lips.  His best female friend is in love with him.  The girl he tutors is in love with him.  Yuki’s rival idol is in love with him and he does everything in his power to help all these other girls out and give them false hope, and then he COMPLETELY IGNORES YUKI FOR LIKE A MONTH.  And so many of the problems this couple has could have been solved if they both had cell phones…and then I realized in episode 11 that this anime is supposed to take place in 1986.  Um…why did it take so long for the viewer to have this important detail spelled out for them?  Sure, they probably put a date stamp up in the first episode, but like hell I’m going to remember that weeks/months later.  Anyway, I hate Fuji.  I hate him because throughout this whole thing, even though he tells other girls he loves them and sleeps with that whore of a manager, he still thinks he should get some sympathy because he cries about how much he loves Yuki.  In fact, he tells the manager that she might not be Yuki, but they could be “something else” together.  Ugh.  I just hate him.  This anime has a second season that I probably will not watch for a long, long time, until I get this horrible taste out of my mouth.  I rated this show 4/10 on MAL.  Yuck.

Blade of the Immortal – Episode 1 Blade of the Immortal Cover

This is one of the shows I got from my latest Crunchyroll Mystery Box, and I started it because I was all Naruto‘ed out.  As far as I can tell, there’s this samurai who goes around killing a bunch of people who is immortal.  Once his sister gets killed, he pledges to only kill bad people and has to knock out a certain number of them before he feels like his life will be vindicated or something.  It’s pretty dumb.  I wasn’t that impressed.  It’s kind of gory in theory, as in, they show shadows of people’s heads being cut off, but not the actual heads, but there’s still blood everywhere.  The dub is pretty subpar, but the DVD packaging is nice, so that’s why I popped it open.  Also, the opening theme is REALLY stupid.  It’s about a rabbit.  And this is a bloody samurai show.  Okay then.

Akuma no Riddle – Episode 5 Akuma no Riddle Cover

Nooooo, they got rid of the awesome Pocky girl already!  Goddamn it.  I want a reunion special.  I know a lot of people are turned off by this monster-of-the-week episode style this anime has going on, but I really like it.  Blame my massive consumption of Sailor Moon, if you want, but it doesn’t bother me.  This was a really good episode, even if I lost one of my favorite assassins.  Though whatsherface pulled out her yuri card towards the end…watch out, Tokaku, she’s coming for you.

Sailor Moon S – Episodes 26-28 Sailor Moon S Cover

Speaking of Sailor Moon, now that we have a release date for the new show (July 5!), I am frantically trying to finish the series before the new one comes out.  I might actually be better off reading the manga — I just finished volume 5, which is what equates to the end of season 2, and it was SO much better than the anime, holy shit — but I’m still fighting the good fight here.  We’ve gone into the Hotaru-centric episodes, and I keep remembering all the awesome Outer Senshi moments that happen here, especially since Haruka is being a super BAMF and getting pissed off all the time.  I love her.  She’s by far one of my favorite anime characters of all time.  The Outers are more powerful than everyone else because they are supposed to protect the planet from things in outer space…but since shit got real down on earth, they are working below their stations now, slumming it to “help” Sailor Moon. I use that term loosely because they really just want to find the Messiah and make sure she doesn’t turn all evil and rip the place to shreds…and we all know who that is supposed to be, right?  Right?  I get confused around this point because I sort of remember what happens but sort of don’t, so finishing off this season will be both good and bad.  Good, because I’ll get everything straight.  Bad, because then I have to delve into Super S, which is all about Chibi-usa…shoot me.

Save Me! Lollipop – Episodes 9-10 Save Me Lollipop Cover

I really had the intention to knock this whole series out last night before Attack on Titan came on, but then I got on the phone, so that was put on hold.  These two episodes were actually pretty cute.  It turns out Zero has a nutso fiance, and Ichii used to be in love with his (not blood related) sister.  Yeah, fucked up stuff in a girl’s show~!  This anime has actually not been as shitty as I thought it was going to be, and it’s not all cutesy fluff crap, either.  Don’t get me wrong, I still want to finish it immediately just to get it off my list, but it’s not as bad as Fantasista Dolls or anything.

So now we’ve come. (pause) To the endddddd of the road. (pause) Still I can’tttttt lettttttt goooooo. (pause).  Okay, I’m done.  Boyz II Men do it better than anything I could type in this box.  Current tallies: I’m still currently watching 239 anime and have completed 24 shows this year.  I have already promised myself I’ll knock out Save Me! Lollipop for next week and I will try for one other.  I got the urge to finish Golden Time, but I don’t know if I’ll have the actual time to get through more than 10 episodes of it for next week.  I guess this is the cliffhanger.  Dun dun dunnnnnn…okay, I’m done.

Anime Mondays #42

Dude…there are some weird things people search for that lead to my blog.  Seriously.  They’re not even on my page.  Please stop.  You know which search terms you are.  Anyway, I’ve been ridiculously sick all week, which leads to copious amounts of marathoning fueled by cold medicine.  You have been warned.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle – Episodes 1-16 Phi Brain Season 1 Cover

See, I told you.  I never sit down and watch this many episodes of a show in a row, but I’ve been consistently going back to Phi Brain all week when I haven’t been knocked unconscious by Nyquil.  This is not a show I would have normally picked up; all the characters are ugly, the art style is just atrocious…yet, here I sit watching episode after episode.  The story is based around this genius named Kaito who is crazy good at puzzles.  He solves this one that tries to kill him, and then gets this armband which stimulates his brain to make him crazier good at puzzles.  Then there’s this puzzle league where people create these death traps masquerading as puzzles that may or may not have prizes attached…but you can only get them if you don’t die.  I guess it’s almost survival game-ish?  Maybe that’s why I like it?  I have no idea, but I can’t stop watching it.  There are three seasons, so it’s going to take me awhile, but I’m ready for the ride.  Also, it has one of the greatest opening theme songs I’ve ever heard.  I’ve literally had two bars of it stuck in my head since I started watching at the beginning of the week.  The opening sucks, but the song is amazing.  I’m banking on finishing the first season this week, so we’ll see what happens after I plow through it.

One Piece – Episode 74 One Piece Cover

So there were some giants fighting and one giant killed the other, and then some enemies came all up in here and started trapping people by capturing them in wax, and all Zoro wanted to do was make an awesome pose…that’s about all I can remember.  I switched a disc?  So I’m on the last one of collection three.  Yippee?  Don’t worry, I have a bunch of Christmas presents to wrap, so I plan on moving to collection four before the holiday.  On a side note, I hope Funimation decides to release more One Piece collections; I don’t want to change box art to have to continue the series in the stupidly overpriced voyage format.  Yuck.

Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters – Episodes 25-40 Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters Cover

This is what has replaced Naruto as the show I watch before I go to sleep until I get another set in, and since I’ve spent most of this week in various stages of sleep and insomnia, I watched a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh.  AND THE TOURNAMENT IS OVER.  And what a tournament it was.  Mai (who is the best character) copped out of her duel with Yugi, Joey beat that weirdo guy with the machine cards, and then it was Joey vs. Yugi in the Pokemon finals…wait.  Wrong show.  Anyway, since they got on the goddamned island, I was like, “Yugi doesn’t care about money.  Why doesn’t he just give Joey the money if he wins?”  I guess Joey would have been a shitty Duel Monsters player forever if that happened, and we wouldn’t have been treated to the most ridiculous montage ever before Joey and Yugi got it on, but what happens at the end?  Yugi gave Joey the money.  Called it.  Oh yeah, and then Yugi fights Pegasus, which dragged on for five episodes, I fell asleep a lot, the end.  If you didn’t know who was gonna win this battle then…I don’t know what to tell you.

Cardfight Vanguard – Episodes 1-2 Cardfight Vanguard Cover

Apparently this week was all about card game anime.  Unfortunately, this one sucks.  I only got through the first two episodes, but the game was so complicated that I really couldn’t follow along.  Also, it starts with bullying, and that’s never fun.  Cardfight Vanguard is less magical millennium puzzles and more stupid fight sequences, but it’s really boring.  And now that I’ve started it, I’m gonna have to finish it, and I’m dreading my life because the first season alone is 65 episodes.  It’d be so much easier if this had a dub…but I really hope it never gets one.  I mean, if this gets licensed before, oh, let’s say, the amazingness that is Chihayafuru, I will just hurt somebody.

Venus Vs. Virus – Episode 1 Venus Vs Virus Cover

Random surfing through the Funimation Roku Channel brought me to this, but, honestly, I’ve been trying to watch this for quite awhile, although I couldn’t tell you why.  And now that I’ve seen the first episode…I still can’t tell you why.  I can’t even give you a plot summary because all I remember is that it’s about these two girls who work together to shoot monsters…and then one of them turns into a monster.  I know, I’m not very helpful.  The dub was good?  Does that help?  If I randomly surf through there trying to find something else to watch, I’ll go check out another couple episodes and try to get a better read on this.

Shakugan no Shana – Episodes 1-3Shakugan no Shana Cover

Well, I did it.  I finally broke down and purchased the entire Shana series.  Amazon AND Right Stuf were having sales…so I had to take advantage of that.  I re-started season one and the only thing I can think of is that the male protagonist is voiced by the same guy who played the guy in Black Lagoon.  Seeing as I hated Black Lagoon, I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.  But basically, he’s not a human, but he has treasure inside of him, so Shana, who’s not a human either, but is named after her sword that she flails around like a bad ass, follows him around, I am guessing, to grab his treasure once he fades away.  The story is kind of hard to follow, mainly because I have no idea what’s going on.  I mean, most of the people who are “torches” like the main dude fade out within a day and are pretty much zombies, but he’s very cognizant and knows what’s going on.  I don’t know.  The blu-ray of season 1 looks like crap, though.  The picture is not crisp, at all.  I mean, I know this anime is older, but damn.

Sailor Moon S – Episodes 16-25 Sailor Moon S Cover

Yes, I’m still doing it.  I’m attempting to finish the entire Sailor Moon series before the new one starts.  Supposedly, it’s going to happen next month, but since we’ve seen absolutely no promo for it except that it’s going to only air on the internet….come on.  Please happen.  Don’t disappoint me.  Anyway, this group of episodes contains my absolute favorite ones that I have seen so far, including Haruka’s back story and the episode where Uranus and Neptune “die” because they find out they have talismans inside of them.  Sorry, I’m not sorry, but Sailor Uranus is my favorite senshi.  And I love her and Neptune together.  God.  My heart.  The feels.  They are perfect.  Go and watch this whole block of episodes and tell me you don’t love them.  This also has the Crazy Minako episode where she gives all her blood away until Eugeal shoots her with her giant rifle, and the one where Usagi gets drunk and everyone tries to speak really poor English.  BEST EPISODES EVER.

And that’s it from me.  I hope you have a nice holiday if you celebrate it this week, and if not, I hope you get some time off work.  And don’t drink the egg nog.  That shit is just gross.

Anime Mondays #23

Okay…so I almost had a post everyday of the week last week.  I pre-wrote all of them ahead of time except for Saturday thinking that I’d have plenty of time to do it and tons to talk about….yeah, that didn’t happen.  Instead, I was nursing an awesome birthday hangover courtesy of going to Medieval Times the night before, which everyone should attend.  I highly recommend it.  If you are in the Chicago area, I also recommend trying to sit in the green section because he is by far the hottest knight and looks like Adam Levine with long hair.  Needless to say, he gave me a flower, I swooned, accepted his proposal, and we are getting married to unite some kingdoms.  I wish.  No, but seriously, he’s the hottest one and I did get that flower.  Just be prepared to drop a lot of cash on souvenirs you don’t really need like awesome crowns and mini kitana swords.  I don’t know how those fit in, but I wanted one SO BADLY.  Anyway, if you made it through that hot mess of a paragraph, why don’t you enter my giveaway?  It’s free, easy, and only one person has entered so far, meaning there’s a 100% chance of you winning a prize if nobody else posts a comment.  Awesome, right?

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers listed up to the episodes below!

GetBackers – Episodes 18-20 GetBackers Cover

Okay, so  even though this Makubex arc is STILL going on, at least we’re getting somewhere.  But, when I say somewhere, I mean like, three of the minions have been defeated, with no boss battle in sight.  But these guys aren’t killing anybody, oh no, they are bringing them back to get magically healed by some doctor because they all used to be friends.  Ugh.  The power of friendship wins again.  Lord, how I hope this arc ends in the next disc.  I feel like over half the series has been this stupid storyline.  Oh, and Makubex is building an atom bomb.  NO ONE CARES ANYMORE.

Attack on Titan – Episode 8 Attack on Titan Cover

Yeah…I’m breaking my own cardinal rule and watching this weekly…BUT I CAN’T HELP IT.  IT’S SO FREAKING GOOD.  AND HOLY CRAP THIS EPISODE.

Oh, snap, here come some spoilers.

EREN IS ALIVE.  ALIIIIIIIVE.  And in the most awesome way.  I think.  I’ve seen the episode after this one but I’m still not entirely sure on what’s going on but….man.  I love this show.

Uta No Prince Sama Season 2 – Episodes 1-5 Uta No Prince Sama Season 2 Cover

I guess I’ll just say this now: I’m not enjoying season 2 of this show nearly as much as season 1.  Maybe it’s because they’re not technically at music school anymore.  Maybe it’s because I know Haruka is not going to pick a boy.  Maybe it’s because THE STUPID CAT IS BACK AND HE’S A MAIN CHARACTER.  But it’s lost some of its charm.  My two favorites got their episodes in this first bunch I watched, though, and by the time I got to Ren’s episode, I had to take a break.  I guess there’s such a thing as too many hot anime characters.  The horror.

Sailor Moon S – Episode 15 Sailor Moon S Cover

I’ve been in this mood lately where I really, really want to watch Sailor Moon Sailor Stars.  And while, technically, I can since I have finished S and Super S already, I can’t because I’m in the middle of my re-watch of doom and feel compelled to finish S and Super S again before I can watch Stars.  And, holy crap, these Chibi-usa centric episodes are like torture.  I don’t know how I’m going to get through an entire season of them…AGAIN.  At least in S, I have Haruka and Michiru, but man…once Super S hits I’m gonna want to jump off a bridge.  The things I do for Sailor Moon…

Negima! – Episodes 1-6 Negima! cover

Yes, I am trying to collect the entire first crap season of Negima! the anime that tries way too hard to rip off Harry Potter, and is so far failing miserably.  Did I mention that Negi is 9 3/4???  After I heard that, I was pretty much done, but I’ll continue to watch this unless they pull a Girls Bravo and I start to have gross ecchi convulsions or something.  Once I watch disc 2, I’ll have more to say, but right now, I’m pretty much over it.

Cowboy Bebop – Episodes 3-5 Cowboy Bebop Cover

You know how I said last time I wasn’t digging this show too much?  I have two words for you: EPISODE FIVE.  If the rest of this show is anything like episode 5, I will understand why people call it the best anime ever because it was both compelling and beautiful and scary and full of action and oh my god.  Maybe I just should have started there.  It’s really that great.  Well…not Attack on Titan great, but I am enjoying it so much more than the first couple episodes.

Sorry this was kind of clipped.  I have 8 million things still to do tonight.  But you only have one: enter my giveaway!!!

All you have to do is leave me your crunchyroll username in that post and I will be picking two people to win a free month of a crunchyroll anime membership.  I will un-screen the rest of the comments once the giveaway is over, so please don’t think I am ignoring them, I just want an accurate count for this.  Thank you for the birthday wishes!!  I see them!! 🙂

Anime Mondays #7

So by now we’ve all established that I’m way behind, right?  I’ll try and get through as much of this as I can this update and save the rest for the next one because with my new job, I’ve barely had time to breathe, let alone watch anything.

As always, all images are from MAL and there are spoilers below!

Say ‘I Love You’ – Episodes 11-13 Say 'I love you' Cover

I hate shows that end unresolved.  I know, I know, there is going to be an OVA, but that doesn’t mean that I wanted the tv show to end the way it did.  Let me sum up the last three episodes: Mei and Yamato get set up to sleep together and they don’t.  Summer festival that should have been the season finale where I would have felt extremely happy with the ending.  Pointless filler episode that made me hate everyone and wonder why the fuck it was added in the first place.  Seriously, they just should have ended it with episode 12 where Mei realizes she cares about Yamato so much that she’ll dress up in a yukata for him (I don’t really get the reasoning behind this, but I’ll liken it to women dressing up for their men in highly uncomfortable lingerie, so I’ll buy it).  They have a kiss that makes my stomach drop.  The end.  But no.  They had to add on this ridiculous extra thing where Yamato is sick and his sister is being a wench and not letting Mei come over, and everyone gets their signals mixed and it’s extremely contrived like a stupid episode of “Everybody Loves Raymond.”  DUMB.  Even if they switched the last two episodes around, it would have been better.  Shitty ending aside, I really did like this show.  I still haven’t finished Sword Art Online, so I can’t say if it’s my favorite of the season or not, but it’s definitely #2 if it isn’t.  I ranked Say ‘I Love You’ 8/10.  It would have rated  a nine if not for…well…you get it.

My Little Monster – Episodes 11-13 My Little Monster Cover

Another promising show ruined by an unresolved ending.  I guess it was semi-resolved.  But I’m still gonna root for Shizuku and Yamaken.  Towards the end, Haru got ridiculous.  Their relationship just got so unbelievable that I gave up.  Not to mention, I can’t see why all these dudes are falling in love with someone who has pushed everyone away because she “needs to study.”  Someone give this show to a shrink to analyze because I’m sure it wouldn’t take much to come up with a diagnosis for Shizuku.  I completely wanted to love this show.  It sucked me in entirely at the beginning, but even with the addition of a rival, it didn’t help things along.  And they fucking never went on that picnic.  What a lie.  I rated this 7/10 with hope the OVA can bring me some closure.

Sword Art Online – Episodes 19-22 Sword Art Online Cover

I honestly had every intention of finishing this in the past couple weeks, but during my marathon, I ran out of time and had to go to work.  Of course, now I really have no time, and it’s sad to say I got completely thrown off by the scene where Asuna is caught in that computer lab and starts to get tortured by those things with tentacles.  Um…ew.  I don’t think anyone wanted to go there, let alone myself.  Kirito is facing a near impossible task trying to get to the top of the tower, and now that his sister (who’s not really his sister but is still in love with him and that’s STILL creepy) knows it’s him playing the game (which I thought she had always known?  stupid confusing.) and refuses to speak to him because he broke her heart, he’s really up shit creek.  What’s with all the incest?  Actually, what’s with the entire second half of this show?  I bought the fact that Asuna has a creepy fiance in the real world who wants to molest her in a hospital bed, but what I’m not buying is all this consciousness research and, oh, THE FACT THAT KIRITO’S SISTER IS NOT REALLY HIS SISTER BUT ACTS LIKE HIS SISTER AND STILL WANTS TO MAKE OUT WITH HIM.  Ew.  I’m done.

Hidamari Sketch – Episodes 1-2 Hidamari Sketch Cover

So I was going to purchase all the seasons from RightStuf when they had their big Christmas sale because A: it reminded me of Lucky Star, and B: it’s by the same people who did Madoka Magica so I thought I’d like it.  Um…I’m really glad I only bought the first season.  I don’t think Hidamari Sketch compares to Lucky Star at all.  Firstly, Lucky Star is actually funny.  Secondly, I can’t find anything about any of these characters that I like.  And finally, it’s weird.  It’s got that oddball ef – a tale of memories art style that I can’t get used to, and quite frankly, dislike a lot.  It’s DEFINITELY no Madoka Magica.  I’ll end up finishing the first season just because I paid money for it, but unless it gets leagues better, it will go into the category of Aria the Natural, which is the only show my OCD has allowed me to drop without feeling guilty that I didn’t finish all the sequels.  Oh, and for anyone who’s wondering, it’s about some girls who live in an apartment complex who go to art school.  Could’ve been great but not so much.

Soul Eater – Episodes 27-29 Soul Eater Title

I hate to say it, but I don’t remember anything at all about these episodes.  I’m going to have a bitch of a time getting back into this show if it’s going the way of Bleach, etc.  What happened, Soul Eater?  You used to own my heart!!  Sigh.

Lucky Star – Episodes 1-4 Lucky Star Cover

This is my second rewatch of Lucky Star, and if I’ve seen it this many times, you know it’s gotta be good.  Actually, the first time I watched the first episode, I didn’t get it at all.  I didn’t know why this was supposed to be funny.  But I kept with it.  And then I started catching some of the jokes and references.  And at the end, I was so enthralled I watched it all over again just to get some of the stuff I didn’t the first time.  I bought the deluxe version of Volumes 1-5 off amazon for like six bucks apiece (god, volume 6, why can’t I find you for under 100 bucks? :() so now I’m watching it one more time.  Shockingly, the dub isn’t too horrible, even though it’s Bandai, though my favorite character has the most annoying voice.  Sad.  (For those of you playing the home game, my favorite is Kagami.)  Thankfully, they kept the ending songs in Japanese because Konata belting the shit out of anything is possibly the greatest thing in the universe.

Sailor Moon S – Episode 14 Sailor Moon S Cover

This episode marks the entrance of Sailor Chibi Moon.  That alone was enough for me to not watch any more of this for the time being.  Seriously, worst. animated character. EVER.

Chihayafuru 2 – Episode 1 Chihayafuru 2 Cover

SPOILER ALERT!  Soon, you will all know about my undying love for the first season of this show.  Even with its unresolved ending, I still wanted to marry it and have its babies.  It was the reason I purchased a crunchyroll account in the first place.  I literally could not stop watching this show.  Want to know why?  The characters.  Good lord, I love them all.  So go watch the first season and then come back and watch the second one with me.  It’s what I do as soon as I get home from work on Friday afternoons.  It’s like, YAY IT’S THE WEEKEND!  CHIHAYA TIME!!!  And this season is shaping up to be a good one.  I’ll talk about this more soon with hearts in my eyes.

Love Live! School Idol Project – Episode 1 Love Live! School Idol Project Cover

Despite the weirdo computer animation of the characters’ bodies but not their heads, Love Live! is shaping up to be a really cute show.  Basically, a school is closing because of low enrollment, and these girls want to save it by becoming school idols because this bomb ass school has some and its enrollment is super high.  The music is so adorable and even though the situation is dire, the girls are so jazzed about this idol thing…ugh, I want them to save it.  It’s dumb shows like this that make me love anime, let me tell you.

Congratulations!  You’ve made it to the end!  And do you know what I have for one lucky person?

First come first serve.  Here you go!

And now I’m off to…take a nap probably.  Happy Monday, kids.
