Anime Mondays #65

This week has been a challenge.  Let me tell you guys, I’ve had no power since Monday night after a bunch of tornadoes ripped through our area.  It finally came back on Friday, but I was going insane.  No air conditioning.  No anime (almost).  I felt like a farmer or something, waking up when the sun came up only because I could have light to do normal things like not shower in the dark and attempt to make my hair not look horrific because I couldn’t turn on a blow dryer.  I rely on technology way too much, but, you know what?  So does everyone else.  And I learned I could charge my phone in very unusual places.  Anyway, I did manage to knock a show off the list this week because once I got internet again, I binge watched all over the place.  And, and!  This is a post with a prize inside.  You know the drill.  Also, I finished the newest season of Orange is the New Black, and damn.  That ending.  I was very pleasantly surprised.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Red Data Girl – Episodes 4-6 Red Data Girl Cover

I have absolutely no idea what is going on in this anime.  I mean, none, other than it’s some kind of Japanese spirit-apalooza, trying to lump as many different kinds of ghosts and demons in there that they can.  I mean, I know a little bit about various spirits thanks to watching other anime, but they did a much better job of explaining the details so I could understand that, oh yes, this is a fox spirit, and this one lives in the water, and this one will kill you while you sleep.  Not Red Data Girl.  Oh, no, it’s like I should just know them automatically and roll with it, but that is not the case!  I don’t want to have to wikipedia a bunch of crap on my iphone just to figure out what’s happening.  Also, it’s not a scary or action-oriented show about spirits, they all like…attend this school for endangered spirits.  It’s stupid.  I liked this show more when the preview tricked me into thinking it was a reverse harem.  PS – it’s not.  At all.  Don’t get your hopes up.

Soul Eater Not! – Episodes 8-12 (Completed!) Soul Eater Not Cover

If Soul Eater Not! had spent the whole series leading up to what happened in the final three episodes, it would have been a much better anime.  All the slice of life stuff was completely unnecessary.  The last three episodes were action, action, action, and that’s where the Soul Eater franchise belongs, not making stupid boob jokes every four minutes or trying too hard to produce some yuri undertones.  Episodes 8 and 9 were just atrocious.  They were filler and throwaway, and I had to force myself to continue on, just because I knew I wanted to knock this series off my list this week.  But the last three…epic.  The dark haired girl learns how to be a proper weapon, she “chooses” a partner, there’s a witch battle, and, most importantly, there’s another Death the Kid cameo.  Swoon.  It’s a real shame that they wasted 3/4 of a series, though.  An anime should not have to have a shit build-up just to blow it out of the park at the end.  I know a lot of people dropped this show early on, and maybe this was our payoff for sticking through, but man…don’t do that.  I rated this show 6/10 on MAL, and, yes, I added two points for the last arc.  Watch this if you really, really like Soul Eater, otherwise, I’d pass.

Beyond the Boundary – Episode 2 Beyond the Boundary Cover

This show was recommended to me in my birthday giveaway, so I thought I’d give it another try.  I had watched the first episode when it was airing, but the comedic/moe elements really threw me off.  Taking a second look at it, I was ready to watch more than one episode…but then my power went out.  Bastards.  I like the darker tone that Beyond the Boundary has going for it, and that it actually has semblance of a plot, other than like, K-On!, which is what the anime reminds me of.  Same studio.  That’s why.  It also reminds me of a Deadman Wonderland Lite, but that’s just because the main girl gets her power from spilling her blood.  And she’s anemic.  Oh my god, the moe.  However, she was less annoying in episode 2 than I remembered her being in the first episode.  I will definitely be continuing this in the near, as opposed to the far, future.  Thanks for the rec!  You picked a winner!

Hikaru no Go – Episodes 17-20 Hikaru no Go Cover

In case you were wondering exactly what I was watching when my power flipped off, this was it.  And right in the middle of an episode, too, so I had to finish off the disc over the weekend.  LAME.  So, we’re back in this internet gaming thing, where Sai is playing games and kicking ass, and people in these amateur tournaments are like, “Who is this Sai?  WE HAVE TO KNOW!” and they go around like the Spanish Inquisition asking anyone if they have any information.  Um…why didn’t they just trace the IP address?  I’m sure that information was available.  Play less Go, hack some more.  Anyway, so Akira ends up playing Sai, and he thinks it’s Hikaru, but he’s not positive because Hikaru sucked a lot in their tournament match.  Little did he know that it just wasn’t Sai cheating for Hikaru in that match, but I digress.  Hikaru and Sai decide to stop playing online because he doesn’t want to be found out, and then Hikaru jumps onto the professional bandwagon because he wants to compete with Akira.  What?  Turns out he can’t go pro unless a: he passes a test, and 2: he quits his middle school team.  What will he do?  Will he abandon his friends for his selfish desires???  Gasp!  Yeah, I don’t know the answer because that’s where the disc ended.

Karneval – Episodes 1-3 Karneval Title

Okay, I swear to god, I have seen the first episode of this anime about 30 times.  Why?  Because I can never remember what happens in it when I want to go past it, and then I will fall asleep during episode 2.  Not kidding.  I used up a good chunk of my laptop battery trying to keep from going nuts at night when I had no power watching this, and every time, at episode 2, I’d knock myself out and wake up hearing that “Be My Reason~” theme song.  I’d rewind, try to start it over, and promptly fell asleep again.  Ugh.  Karneval, why are you so boring???  The character design in this show is what drew me to it, and the colors are outstanding.  I’m like a kid staring at rainbows just going, “ooh…pretty!”  I BOUGHT this.  I mean, the art box, come on.  I just can’t get into whatever plot it may or may not have at all.  I finally watched up to episode 4 just because I was doing my nails while my laptop was on, and I couldn’t fall asleep, but ugh.  Something about a rainbow forest and some animals…I don’t know.  Greg Ayres is severely miscast in this dub (he should have played the white haired kid), but the dude who plays Yogi (the blond guy) is fantastic.  Hold on, I’m gonna look him up.  Christopher Bevins.  Marry me.

Say, “I Love You” – Episodes 8-9 (Re-watch) Say 'I love you' Cover

Okay, the dude who loves The Land is amazing.  Sorry, I love him and his blond fauxhawk a lot.  Not sorry.  And his English dub voice actor is hysterical.  Hold on, I’m gonna look him up, too.  Andrew Love.  You can marry me, as well.  Polygamy for the win.  Other than that, these were the huge communication misunderstanding episodes, and other than the last episode of the series, they are clearly not my favorite.

Sailor Moon Crystal – Episode 1 Sailor Moon Crystal Cover

I pretty much said all I needed to say about this episode in the post right underneath this one (which I will do each time a new episode airs, yay!), but I did end up watching this twice, and I liked it better the second time around.  The silhouette dream sequences are still the best part of the anime, though.

Sailor Moon S – Episodes 29-31 Sailor Moon S Cover

Of course, as soon as I was finished re-watching new Sailor Moon, I wanted to re-watch old Sailor Moon, and from here until the end of the series is where shit gets real.  It’s like plot, plot, plot all the time, and there are Outer Senshi everywhere, and I LOVE IT.  It’s almost as good as the arc in the middle of the series where the talismans pop out of Uranus and Neptune, but not quite.  It makes me nervous about their new English dub voices because Viz really fucked up casting Stephanie Sheh as Sailor Moon (ugh, she ruins about as much as Monica Rial does), and, while I am all for Cristina Vee (aka Mio from K-On!) playing Sailor Mars, I don’t know about the rest.  Todd Haberkorn.  Why…anyway, I’ll just watch this subtitled.  Not like I haven’t a million times already.

The Familiar of Zero – Episodes 1-9 The Familiar of Zero cover

Episodes 1-8 of this were actually a re-watch, as I have seen them all before subtitled.  But Right Stuf had a Sentai sale…and you know where I’m going with this.  Honestly, I purchased this on blu-ray from Deep Discount DVD because it was cheaper and I haven’t had issues with them in the past like every other person in the universe.  So, I watched more than half the series in one go.  Dubbed.  This is a Geneon dub, and it is GOOD.  It took me a little while to realize Saito wasn’t actually 30 years old, but once I got past that, the dub became a winner.  For the newbies, The Familiar of Zero is about a magical boarding school (think Harry Potter), but way less serious.  Our main girl, Louise, is terrible at magic.  Awful.  Everyone in her class has to pick a familiar, and she conjures up this peasant human boy from Earth while everyone else gets dragons and shit.  Poor girl can’t catch a break.  So, while all the rest of the familiars are flying around and spitting fire, Louise’s is washing her underwear.  Yeah, there are cheap jokes.  Yes, there is a harem vibe in here.  But I think this show is hysterical.  Hell, it has like, four seasons, so it must be doing something right.  I’m surprised it’s not more popular in America because it really has everything going for it, and it looks amazing on blu-ray, even though it’s ten years old.  Pick this one up if you can, it’s not out of print anymore, people.  I got my copy for $30.

Damn, that seemed like a lot for a girl with no power all week.  Here’s a free Crunchyroll guest pass:

So, I’m still currently watching 241 series, with 31 completed shows this year.  Expect both numbers to go up next week, as I will be doing my summer season first impressions.  I’m looking at that show about the rock band, the one that has the word “Hollywood” in the title, the terrorist show, and…Tokyo Ghoul.  Along with anything else that has a pretty title graphic on Crunchyroll.  I’m so easy.

Edited after the fact: I forgot that I also re-watched the rest of the first set of Dear Brother… and let me just tell you that the transfer looks fantastic.  If you can pick up these sets at Right Stuf or something, DO IT.  You won’t be disappointed.

Anime Mondays #57

I just got back from a weekend out of town where I went to a legitimate bingo casino to play, and the lady I was playing with won $3000.  No joke.  3k.  That’s so much money.  I get excited when I win $20 at the casino, but three thousand dollars?  That’s insanity.  In other news, I have a new favorite place.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Naruto – Episodes 100-106 Naruto cover

Another box set of Naruto has been completed.  I have the rest of the series coming from amazon this week so I won’t have to buy any more, but then…then it’s time to work on Shippuden.  I’m kind of dreading it, not gonna lie.  I might have to take a really, really long break.  In this little block of episodes, we get some stupid ninja mission where the gang has to play bodyguards to some dude running a race, who I swear is voiced by the same actor as one of the original ninja turtles.  It was pretty worthless.  However, we get one little throwaway comedic episode where Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura spend the entire time trying to get Kekashi to take his mask off.  More of these, please!  Oh man, even though it was cheesy and played out as hell, I still enjoyed it…except for the ending.  I won’t ruin it entirely, but it’s safe to say no one will be pleased.

Paradise Kiss – Episodes 1-4 Paradise Kiss cover

I honestly could not tell you what took me so long to start Paradise Kiss, other than the fact that I couldn’t find it anywhere.  It’s by the creator of Nana, so, in theory, it should have been top priority for me, but I have never gotten around to watching it.  Well, it came in from my rental service, and when I had this major bout of insomnia, I watched the entire disc at 4am before I had to get up to get ready for work.  Oh. My. God.  I am obsessed.  It’s completely out of print, but I didn’t give a shit, as soon as I had put the thing back into its red envelope, I had to get on amazon and ebay and price check until I could buy the whole series.  It’s different from Nana, but it has a lot of similar themes.  It also is a spin off for a series I started a long time ago called Gokinjo Monogatari (Neighborhood Story) which I liked but had a hard time tracking down, as well.  As for ParaKiss, this girl is walking down the street when a dude with a lot of facial piercings literally stops her and makes her turn around.  When he sees her face, he tells her she needs to be a model for his clothes, and though, at first she isn’t having any of it, slowly her mood changes, and she becomes obsessed with the world of these fashion school kids behind a hot pink door.  I will say this about the series; the pacing is horrific.  It just moves so quickly, it doesn’t give you enough time to really enjoy anything.  I guess that’s the downfall of having a 12 episode series, as opposed to all the creator’s similar work which is 40+ episodes.  Also, the stupid “comedic animation” style is really distracting, along with just being terrible.  Nana had a bunch of it, and I could write it off because it was mostly Hachi barking, but this stuff just takes you out of the moment.  But Yukari and George…man.  They make my stomach drop.  Obviously, this is more romance than anything else, and it’s just fantastic.  I can’t wait for my dvds to come so I can marathon the shit out of this as soon as I can open the mailer.  Also, the ending theme is “Do You Want To” by Franz Ferdinand, and that makes me happier than almost any ending theme ever.  All Ai Yazawa anime adaptations have fantastic ending themes.  Love, love, love.

Akuma no Riddle – Episodes 1-3 Akuma no Riddle Cover

And here is another anime I have become completely obsessed with.  The stupid English title aside, Akuma no Riddle is so amazing, I just can’t even deal.  Once again, I picked this up on Hulu when an insomnia fit hit (stress: it’s really bad for you unless it forces you to stay awake and watch awesome anime), and stayed awake until I had devoured every single episode that has aired already.  Yes, it’s another survival game anime, but this time, it’s a bunch of girls who are all focused on assassinating one girl…well, at least until Tokaku jumps in and changes the game, aiming to protect this girl instead of kill her.  All the characters are a little tropey, yes, but they’re also all certifiably insane, so it makes them loads more interesting.  I can’t wait to delve into all the character backstories and get to learn what they want their prizes to be if they can chop the target girl, Haru, into pieces.  Tokaku is great.  She’s not sure why she’s drawn to Haru, and that confusion makes her human instead of just a killing machine.  I love this for so many reasons, but here are two random ones that really stick out.  #1: there is a different ending theme every episode, and y’all know how much I love my ending themes.  #2: the characters spend a whole three minutes talking about nail polish in an episode.  Oh yes.  This show is going to be great.

Soul Eater Not! – Episode 2 Soul Eater Not Cover

This show is really dumb, but I am going to keep watching it in hopes of another Death the Kid cameo.  No joke.  It’s extremely trope-y, there’s not much to it, and the setting is the best part of the anime.  Meh.  In this episode, we learn a little more about Anya who sells her family crest to buy a giant Tanuki statue and then all the girls get part time jobs.  …stupid.  I hope this gets better.  Apparently, there’s something special about all of them because they are being guarded by a couple of guys, but we know nothing yet.

Baby Steps – Episode 2 Baby Steps Cover

I’m really upset that I don’t like this anime.  Our main dude has realized he can take cell phone pictures and video to track his tennis form, so now he’s going to be obsessed with perfecting it because hitting the ball in perfect form was like some religious experience for him.  I just don’t give a shit about any of the characters, still.  I don’t care if they win or lose or if they ever hit the ball perfectly.  I’m over it.  I’ll finish it…but I’m over it.  This may be one of the sports shows that I have to marathon to enjoy, but we’ll see.

And that’s the end.  My backlog challenge has really taken a hit lately.  I’m currently watching 239 shows and I have completed 20 anime so far this year.  I’m all about taking a nap right now, though, instead of catching up on the stuff I missed over the weekend.  Sleep is trumping reverse harems.  I never thought I’d see the day.

Anime Mondays #56 (Spring 2014 First Impressions)

Can someone enlighten me on how this year’s weather works?  Seriously.  It’s like we get two gorgeous days in a row where I can wear shorts and no coat and then we go right back to snow.  Is this, like, an apocalypse lead up?  I am not amused.  It’s April, this should be the time where I get to wear capris until October.  Anyway, I know you did not come here for a weather report.  Here’s this week’s anime recap.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Baby Steps – Episode 1 Baby Steps Cover

I cheated on my backlog challenge so hard this week.  Once I started watching the new series, it was like I couldn’t stop myself.  And then, when I tried to finish a couple off so I could go back to my original number, my ADD kicked in hardcore and I could only get through a few episodes at a time.  Ugh.  But Baby Steps.  I don’t know about anyone else, but this anime reminded me a lot of Marmalade Boy.  I don’t know if it’s the weird, almost retro art style, or the fact that it’s about tennis, but has melodramatic undertones (as opposed to Marmalade Boy, which is a melodrama where the main character sometimes plays tennis…), but it went there.  Unfortunately, this was not a good thing.  I feel like I’m going to contradict myself many times this week, but I wasn’t buying the sports/slice of life drama Baby Steps has going on.  Maybe it’s because I connected absolutely 0% with the main character.  He studies really hard in school to get perfect grades, but for no real reason.  He doesn’t enjoy it, he just thinks he has to.  He has no life to speak of, other than that he copies his perfect notes for his classmates, and wants to pick up a sport so he can get some exercise.  Yeah.  He’s not passionate about anything at all.  I’m sure the point of this set up is to show how eventually he will become passionate about tennis, but the way the anime went about this was just overkill.  The female lead he’s paired with is pretty much devoid of personality also, other than that she loooooves tennis and wants to go pro.  I just wasn’t feeling the first episode, but since it looks like the first half of this series is going to be one big training montage, I won’t feel the need to marathon it and can watch it as it airs.  Bad for a sports series but good for my backlog challenge.

Princess Nine – Episodes 5-26 (Completed!) Princess Nine cover

Unlike Baby Steps, here we have a sports anime mixed with drama that I absolutely LOVED.  Princess Nine made my heart whole, broke it completely, and then put it back together again.  Oh man.  Once I started watching this anime, I just did not want to stop.  In fact, I didn’t watch anything else at all until I completed it earlier this week.  And once it came to the end, I was a sobbing hot mess.  God, I wish there was another season of this show.  I know it’s so old that it will never ever happen, and there isn’t even a manga I can read, but I fell in love with every single character so much that I just want more.  For a sports anime, the pacing is completely off, and, honestly, that’s the show’s biggest downfall.  We know in the very first episode that the girls will need three years to play at Koshien, which is the equivalent of the World Series for Japanese high school baseball, but by the time we get to where this is a legitimate possibility, it’s episode 25 already.  Yes, there are a lot of training episodes, but they did not take away from the overarching story of the show (except for the one with Ryo’s extended dream sequence…trust me, you’ll know what I mean when you get there) and I felt that the love triangle here was top notch.  A lot of the problems are all miscommunication based (as seems to be the norm in romance anime), but I bought it.  Oh, how I bought it, hook, line and sinker.  Please get past the terrible pacing and the in-game stock footage.  Just do me a favor and watch this show, if for no other reason than to hear Monica Rial perform a dub voice that doesn’t sound like a petulant, high-pitched whiny child for 80% of the show.  SHE IS GOOD, GUYS.  Except for the first five episodes, where the high hot mess comes out, but as the character develops, so does her voice, and man.  I am so in love with Princess Nine.  I rated it 9/10 on MAL, and if you like your sports anime with a high dose of drama and characters you give a shit about, I highly recommend it.

Naruto – Episodes 94-99 Naruto cover

Tsunare is a bad ass.  That pretty much sums up these few Naruto episodes, but it’s oh so true.  She not only takes down the bad guys, but she heals Sasuke and becomes the fifth hokage.  God, a character on Naruto I like who is not a bad guy and not a child.  I’m honestly shocked.  The filler (I’m just guessing this is filler because the story arc seems to be over…) episodes after the battle aren’t half bad, either, but since I have no idea what everyone is going to do now that Tsunare’s the fifth hokage, it means I have no idea what this is leading up to.  More Chunin exams?  I’m all about it.  I bet there will just be some lame ninja missions, though.

Soul Eater Not! – Episode 1 Soul Eater Not Cover

Yeah…this is not Soul Eater.  I’ll cop to squealing at the cameos by the original characters in the first episode, though.  Especially Death the Kid, my anime husband, flying by as someone looked out the window.  No shame.  But, they looked so…weird.  The art style has completely changed, so Maka didn’t look like Maka (she has moe eyes now, gross) and Soul was like…this ugly, mute shell of a person.  I didn’t even recognize Sid.  The only returning character who looked somewhat normal was Black Star, and his cameo was by far the best.  Other than that, Soul Eater Not! is about two girls who are going to fight over this weapon girl who has zero personality.  Actually, the two girls fighting over her don’t have much of those, either.  One is a bitch, and the other is dumb.  That’s about it.  Seriously.  It may end up being a cute show, but it’s not anything that I would have wanted out of a Soul Eater spin-off.  However…I do want to cosplay as the weapon girl.  Her outfit is the cutest school uniform I have seen in awhile.

Kamigami no Asobi – Episodes 1-2 Kamigami no Asobi Cover

Well, you know how I said I was looking for a reverse harem to fill the void left by the end of Brothers Conflict?  FOUND IT.  This anime has absolutely no shame in what it is.  This is like…the reverse harem to end all reverse harems, packed chock full of manservice.  I mean, in the first five minutes, we are treated to a magical girl transformation sequence for a male character.  Oh yeah.  It went there.  Like, you know how on the Americanized edit of Sailor Moon how they erased all the lines in the girls’ silhouettes?  None of that here.  Kamigami no Asobi is about Zeus bringing a bunch of gods from different mythologies together and dropping them in a fake school he creates with one human girl, saying they all need to learn about love and interactions with people.  So, pretty much this one girl is going to have to date every single one of them for the good of all man kind.  Um, sign me up.  She’s not as devoid of personality as most reverse harem girls, so I don’t hate her (yet), even if she did try to run away.  Why…why do these reverse harem girls never realize how awesome their lives are?  I don’t understand it.  Dumb characters are dumb.  This anime will have no plot and will more than likely also be dumb, but I am going to enjoy every moment of it.  True facts.

La Corda D’oro Blue Sky – Episodes 1-2 La Corda D'oro Blue Sky Cover

Oh, my precious La Corda, you are back with a vengeance.  How I have missed the halls of Seiso Academy with cute boys playing instruments everywhere with horrible animation and still frames to infer movement.  The first series was the shit.  It’s what made me excited for anime again when I realized that it was so much more than Sailor Moon and Unico.  I was like, reverse harem?  That’s a thing???  Oh, yes.  But this spin off…I’m not really feeling it.  Firstly, TOO MANY CHARACTERS.  Lord, in the first episode, I think we were introduced to ten of them, with barely any warning or development, and it all went by so quickly that I couldn’t even register the different hair colors.  Secondly, the premise is just…dumb.  In the first series, the main girl couldn’t play the violin at all until a music fairy helped her and gave her a magic violin that practically played itself.  That I could buy.  This time, it’s about this oddly dominant purple haired dude who practically kidnaps his two friends and forces them to enroll in Seiso without any pretense whatsoever.  I mean, their luggage is magically waiting for them at the dorms.  They didn’t have to apply?  Audition?  What about the parents?  How does this even happen?  Stupid.  Thirdly, the best characters are going to be the ones that go to different schools, and we will barely get to see them, I can tell already.  I’m sad.  I miss my trumpet playing anime boyfriend Hihara.  Plus, I want to punch the lead girl in the face.  Win some, lose some.

Love Live! School Idol Project – Episodes 4-5 Love Live! School Idol Project Cover

Once I started all these new shows, I tried really hard to finish some old ones.  Unfortunately, I started with Love Live, so that didn’t end well.  I had to switch to Hulu Plus to watch after episode 5, and for some reason, it didn’t have subtitles?  So there went that.  Man, this show is boring.  You’d think I’d like it since it’s about a girl group and music, but…no.  It’s more first season K-On! than anything worth watching.  The characters aren’t cute (minus the red haired girl), there’s no real plot to speak of, and, though I like the fact that they aren’t succeeding right away, but how long is it going to take for them to at least form the whole group??  I know there’s nine of them, I’ve seen the intro, but we just haven’t gotten that far yet.  In fact, it’s taken me five episodes to even distinguish between the characters to tell them apart in the intro.  Another show where I hope it gets better.  It’s not going to, is it?  I’m trying.

Persona 4: The Animation – Episodes 8-12 Persona 4 Cover

Okay, so I like Rise…but I still don’t like this show.  The episodes without all the fighting and without the Midnight Channel, are still the best episodes, and for an anime that’s really supposed to be about the fighting and this alternate world, that’s really bad.  Also, I can’t find the rest of this series dubbed to rent anywhere, so now I don’t know when I’ll get to finish it.  Is the game a whole lot better?  That’s the only thing I can think of, that people who love the game really love this anime, because I’m not buying why a lot of people think it’s so great.  Someone help me.  Anybody.  Bueller?

School Rumble Season 2 – Episodes 15-17 School Rumble Season 2 Cover

So, I found this show randomly in a box of anime I need to watch because after I sent back that Persona 4 disc, I needed to look at something I actually liked.  I watched the first season years and years ago, along with the OVA and half of the second, but then I just put it aside for some reason.  Let me tell you, when I put it back in the player, I immediately picked the storyline back up and remembered every single character and what they were about and how much I liked them.  This is a difficult feat, especially for a comedic anime, and a testament to how good School Rumble is.  Sure, it has its faults, like the dub is terrible (so that’s really just a Funimation fault, whoops) and you have to really pay attention because the dialogue is so rapidly paced, but it’s a good, solid comedy.  These episodes were especially good because they all involved Harima staying at Tenma’s house and then being kicked out and having to go on this adventure with Sawachika…ugh SO GOOD.  I felt so terrible for Harima because Tenma is just so clueless and he looooves her, but I could not stop laughing.  Man, I hope he gets his head out of his ass and picks a different girl because they are all so much more deserving than Tenma.  It’s hard to watch more than a few episodes in one sitting, but this show is worth it.

Supernatural: The Animation – Episodes 17-19 Supernatural the Animation Cover

Watching the Supernatural anime just made me want to watch the Supernatural tv show, which I am a huge fan of…even though I haven’t gotten past season 4 yet.  No spoilers!  It’s a good companion piece to the tv show because it has animated episodes from the show, along with anime only episodes, so it doesn’t get boring.  Also, the anime does things that the actual show would never have the budget for, like a giant robot demon made out of junkyard cars.  Oh yes.  Plus, each episode is introduced by Jared Padalecki or Jensen Ackles, so that’s worth your money right there.  And, Jared does the dub voice.  (If you didn’t know, I think he is one of the most attractive men on the history of the planet, so enjoyment level is up to rooftops here.)  Still, it’s hard to marathon this because continuity is a big issue.  Also, the art style isn’t my favorite.  But, I mean…it’s Supernatural.  That’s enough.

And that’s enough for this post.  I am currently watching 237 anime (god, fuck you spring season 😦 ) and have completed 20 shows this year.  There may or may not be a post next week, as I’m going out of town, but if not, just look for a double in two.  I also want to pick up at least a couple more spring shows…I know.  I shouldn’t.  But they’re so shiny and new…lord help me in the summer.  Oh!  And I got my Crunchyroll mystery manga box in the mail.  All Tokyo Pop titles, and most I have never heard of, but I’ll take some pictures and get something up on it before I leave for next weekend.  See you then!

2013 Anime Wrap Up and 2014 Backlog Goal

Happy new year!  What are you looking forward to in 2014?  Personally, I’ve got another Disney vacation in the planning stages and a move.  Ooh, scary.  Also, I want to spend as much time with my baby nieces as possible…unfortunately, they live in a different time zone, but I’ll figure something out.  I’ve got my anime backlog project to keep me busy, and here is the starting number:

animelistThat’s right.  240 anime currently being watched.  (It would have been 241, but I finished something this morning.  Whoops.)  I will not go over this number.  I’d like to cut it down to 200 by the end of the year, but I have no idea if that’s even possible.

As for 2013, I finished more than I thought.  After a few calculations (aka: I scrolled through all my Anime Mondays post and counted off all the shows I marked as completed), I figured out my magic number of shows I finished: 32.  Of course, that includes 7 short OVA series and movies, but that’s still pretty good.  As you can see, I never finish anything.  I have to beat last year by 8 titles to hit my goal, and I’m pretty sure I only have a couple OVA series in my list, which means I have to watch entire series.  The countdown is on.

Speaking of countdowns, here is a list of my favorite anime of 2013.  Please keep in mind that these may not have been made in 2013, but they are ones I finished.  Feat in itself.  How about…seven of them.  Does that sound good?  Anything to put in a Nana reference.

7.  Btooom! Btooom! Cover

I almost put Diabolik Lovers here, but I cared about this show so much that I made an actual review on it, so Btooom! wins.  My love for the survival game premise knows no bounds, and even with an unfinished ending, this deserved a place on my top list.  Sure, it was OVER said top on multiple occasions, but where else can you watch a bunch of people chuck bombs at each other and get a love story out of it?  …Don’t say Future Diary.  That got left off the list for its shitty ending.  I guess unfinished trumps shitty.

6.  Danganronpa: The Animation Danganronpa Cover

What did I tell you?  It’s like survival game-a-palooza up in here.  I watched this show weekly, and it was the only one of the season where I screamed at my tv wanting more immediately.  I really hope the game sequel gets an anime because I need more Junko in my life ASAP.  Also, this has one of the best ending sequences I’ve seen in a long time.  It was decidedly simple, but I loved that moment when the camera panned out and you got to see who had gotten killed and what they were like before the shit hit the fan.  And the song…THE SONG.  I loved it.

5.  Say ‘I Love You’ Say 'I love you' Cover

It was between this or My Little Monster to put in the #5 spot, and although they are both pretty similar, Say ‘I Love You’ made the cut.  I loved the premise of this show, and it reminded me of one of my favorites, Kimi ni Tokdoke, but with a less annoying female protagonist.  And I love Yamato.  I have no shame.  He has absolutely everything, but he loves Mei, and that’s all that matters.  It did start to fall apart some towards the end, but if you like the shoujo romance shows, you should not skip this one.

4.  Lovely Complex Lovely Complex Cover

Speaking of shoujo romances…ugh.  I LOVE Lovely Complex.  It’s right up there with Nana as one of my favorites of all time.  I’ve said it before, but Risa is pretty much me in anime form.  So if anyone wants a really tall girl who doesn’t give up, please, take my number.  I don’t have a thing for bunnies, though.  Anyway, this show made me cry more times than I am willing to admit, so you know it’s got to be a lot.  It also has one of the best anime kisses ever and it gives me the feels.  You know.  Lord.  All the underground hype for this show is completely worth it.

3.  Interstella 555 Interstella 5555 Cover

Yup, this is a movie, but what a fantastic movie.  Firstly, it’s entirely scored in Daft Punk music.  Secondly, it takes place mostly in space, and I DON’T HATE IT.  And, lastly, it’s about a band, which I always love.  If you watch one anime movie in the next few months, this should be it.  Find it while you can, because, sadly, it’s going out of print.  I could watch this every week and not get bored.  My love for Interstella knows no bounds.

2.  Soul Eater Soul Eater Title

This was the longest series I completed in 2013, and it only got finished because it was SO GOOD.  I could not stop watching this.  Death the Kid has one of my favorite character designs of any anime ever, and even if the ending is kind of bogus, I still loved this show.  And there is a spin-off coming!  Here’s to hoping it has a few cameos from the original cast.  And I think I’m the only person who didn’t think Black Star was annoying.  I should get a medal.

1.  Mawaru Penguindrum Penguindrum Cover

Best show of my 2013 hands down.  No contest.  Penguindrum had absolutely everything I could have ever asked for in an anime wrapped up into two awesome box sets.  It’s got the sense of fucked up that I like, has beautiful characters, a psychological storyline, and PENGUINS.  YEAH, PENGUINS.  Seriously, though, it won’t be for a lot of people, but it was my most favorite thing.  I encourage everyone to watch this, but only if you’re prepared to get your mind fucked for hours upon hours.  If that’s your cup of tea, you won’t be sorry.

And I have definitely posted way too often this week.  I’ll be back on Monday with my first completed show of the year.  Spoiler: it wasn’t a very good one.

Anime Mondays #33

I feel like another addition to my “Dumb Things Boys Do at the Bar” series should be forthcoming, kids, as I went to the bar this weekend, and wow, they did a plethora of dumb things.  On the same token, so did some of the girls.  But that is for another time and place.  This place is about anime.  Are you ready?  Here we go.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed below!

Blood Lad – Episode 2 Blood Lad Cover

After giving this show a rest for a little while, I decided to give it another shot, just to see if I could at least stay awake through the second episode.  It took a couple months, but I finally plowed through it and was immediately disappointed.  What I thought could have been an entertaining vampire comedy turned into something that was not at all like my precious Soul Eater, and more just like a bunch of nothing.  So the vampire takes the human girl turned ghost back to the human world to see if he can fix her and then just ends up being a vampire tourist, geeking out over trains and manga.  Seriously?  I started it, so OCD insists I finish Blood Lad, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to like it or complete it anytime soon.  It’s sad when I just don’t care anymore.

Interstella 555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (Completed!) Interstella 5555 Cover

I am a HUGE Daft Punk fan and I didn’t even know this existed until I saw a Glass Reflection review of it.  I knew that the video for “One More Time” was anime and was completely enamored by it the first time I saw it, but I just had no clue they turned the entire album into a movie.  Discovery was the first album I purchased just by hearing it being played in a store.  I remember being in Virgin Megastore (RIP) in Chicago, hearing “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” and immediately asking the first employee I could find what this was and purchasing the CD.  It’s one of those albums where absolutely every song is amazing, and I played the hell out of it even though none of my friends were interested at all.  The movie has no dialogue and is completely scored by the album and a few sound effects.  I know.  It’s got this Fantasia-esque concept, but in a long form, and it feels like the best music video ever made.  Take that, Michael Jackson.  Basically, this band from another planet gets kidnapped by this dude from earth, gets brainwashed, and gets forced to become a band from Earth.  Meanwhile, an alien dude who is in love with the girl in the band tries to save them…it’s really good.  My enjoyment of this movie is kind of biased, seeing as I love Daft Punk and wanted to work in music videos for the longest time until they became less about the art form and more about how many girls in bikinis they could show spraying champagne on some rapper, but I digress.  It’s not going to be everyone’s thing, just like a lot of people really don’t like Daft Punk, but I loved it.  I actually rated this 10/10 on MAL because it’s the only thing I’ve ever seen of its kind, and I had fun with every second of it.  It’s on DVD, but rumors have it going out of print soon, so if you can pick it up, I’d do it.  I got my copy for under $15 on amazon.

Dangan Ronpa: The Animation – Episode 12 Danganronpa Cover

OH MY GOD THIS EPISODE.  Like…I’m so happy my theory was proven wrong.  So, so happy.  Well…I guess there is a slight chance it could be right, but just the fact at who the “mastermind” really is…SO EXCITED.  I mean, come on, we’re in the spoiler zone, right?  My cosplay of choice :).  There is only one left, and I’ll be sad to see this end.  Does the game have a sequel?  I don’t know how it could, but if it does, I hope this gets another season.  I have thoroughly enjoyed this show, and it has succeeded in keeping me on my toes, which I can’t say about a lot of anime.  Wins all around.

Watamote – Episode 11 Watamote Cover

Can I just tell you that after all the crap I gave this show when I marathoned what I had left to watch…and then this episode came…it made me want to take back some of the crap I gave the series.  See, Tomoko can act like a normal person when she has a friend.  Even though sometimes she gets a little crush on her friend Yuu, she can act like a human being when they’re out together.  And then with the Culture Festival Chair dressing up like a bear and giving her a balloon and a hug…I almost lost it.  Seriously.  I was legitly trying not to cry.  I want Tomoko to have a school friend so badly, and if she doesn’t fuck this up, she just might have one.  Please let the final episodes of this series not turn her into a monster again where I’m cringing through every episode.  It’s amazing what friends can do for a person, and the change in Tomoko is just astounding.

Day Break Illusion – Episodes 1-9 Day Break Illusion Cover

I’m so late to this summer season party where I’m starting all these shows in September, but this one just might be worth it.  I watched a review of the first episode that said this was supposed to be like the red-headed stepchild of Madoka Magica, and you guys know how much I love my Madoka, so I had to watch it.  Needless to say, I’ll probably finish the rest of it that’s out before the day is up.  And while this anime does have some parallels to Madoka, it is by no means up to the caliber of that show.  Day Break Illusion is about a girl named Akari who inherited fortune telling abilities from her dead mother, along with, apparently, the ability to turn into a tarot card-based magical girl who fights tarot card-based magical demons.  Her card is the sun card, which means she can make plants grow.  Anyway, the Madoka comparisons begin because unlike children’s magical girl shows, this one has people dying right off the bat.  It has the magical girls doing the killing.  Plus, they don’t skimp on the blood here.  When shit happens, there’s red splatters all over the place.  The animation quality for this show is pretty sub-par, as most of the characters look like “more anime” style versions of characters from Panty and Stocking, and the writing…well, it’s not that great.  I mean, the girl who has the moon card’s name is Luna and her sister’s name is Serena.  Come on, now.  The characters, so far, have gotten very little time to establish detailed backstories, other than one girl’s mother died, one used to be poor, one lost her best friend to one of the demons they’re fighting, and one has a twin sister.  Something that I found quite engaging about this series, though, is that the girls’ parents and family members actually know they are magical girls.  They don’t have to hide it from anyone, and it’s refreshing to see them discussing the trials and tribulations of their duties with their elders, who have gone through it or know someone who has, as their abilities are hereditary.  In fact, one of my favorite scenes was when the one girl’s father came to visit his daughter at her “magical girl school,” and they could sit and talk about how she was making all this money from her battles that could help out the family.  Day Break Illusion definitely has peaked my interest, but if you’re looking for a quality show, this is not it.  It’s like when Shadowstar Narutaru came with all those weirdo plot twists, but had the shittiest animation known to man.  Okay…it’s not THAT bad, but that’s the best comparison I can make right now.  It’s no Madoka Magica or Lyrical Nanoha (another show I really enjoyed), but it’s good for what it is, and I can’t wait to see how they are going to wrap everything up, especially after episodes 8-9 when shit literally hits the fan.

GetBackers – Episodes 41-45 GetBackers Cover

You guys, I AM ALMOST DONE WITH THIS SERIES!  In fact, I have the final disc in my possession, but no telling how long it will actually take me to watch it…because the last arc is another Makubex arc.  WHY, GETBACKERS, WHY???  The first one went on for so long, and the series is going to end on one.  I guess I’m ready for it to be over now, though.  An almost 50 episode series, and the best episodes were the standalone comedic ones.  So sad.

Naruto – Episode 4 Naruto cover

Slowly making my way through this series…I watch this before I go to bed, and it literally took me until late Saturday night to make it through just this one episode because I kept falling asleep through it.  So Naruto and his new gang have to grab a bell from their teacher or they don’t get to eat lunch.  Somehow, I think there are more prevalent problems in their world or some better training they could receive, but episode 5 promises to explain why this is so important….too bad I keep falling asleep through that one, too.

Best of the Week: Interstella 5555, Dangan Ronpa, Day Break Illusion, Watamote

Love it or Leave it: Blood Lad

Hope it Gets Better: GetBackers, Naruto

Just a heads up now; October is going to be an extremely busy month for me, so I may or may not get Anime Mondays posts out.  I’ll be sure to put up my guest passes, though, and there will be different, non-anime content as I get ready to go out on my Disney vacation.  Please feel free to keep up with me on MAL (dangeresque), Hummingbird and Crunchyroll (magica), and Twitter (glitterbotstoo) for the latest ramblings.  See you next week!

Anime Mondays #31

I believe this was a week of fucked up shows.  Now, you guys know how much I love my fucked up anime.  I mean, hello, three of my favorite shows of all time belong to the genre I like to refer to merely as “psychological fucked up shows.”  (For those of you wondering, these shows are Revolutionary Girl Utena, Madoka Magica, and Mawaru Penguindrum.)  But, I think I took the cake this week for the shows I chose to watch, and I didn’t even re-watch any of my favorites.  And I have now learned that sometimes “fucked up” is not as great as I’d like it to be.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers below up to the episodes listed!

The Wallflower – Episodes 14-16 The Wallflower Cover

So, I was in the mood to watch something light where I wouldn’t have to think too much, and I pulled out this gem of a reverse harem show.  It’s kind of sexist in a way — a group of hot guys have to teach this girl obsessed with horror movies and death to be a proper lady or their landlady will put them in the poor house — but at the same time, it’s pretty hysterical.  Plus, the girl who needs to be trained reminds me of myself.  Goddamn it, you can be goth and girly at the same time, though, hello, just look at some of the side characters, including the goth-loli trio who annoy the hell out of everyone.  True to form, however, I can’t remember a damn thing about the episodes I actually watched because I was doing something else at the time.  This show is funny as a whole, however, so I’m not dismissing it; it’s just taking a really long time for me to finish, seeing as I started it over a year ago.

Pokemon – Episodes 10-13 Pokemon Cover

I wrote on twitter the other day that all I want out of life is a boyfriend who’ll watch Pokemon with me and not rip on me.  It’s okay if he rips on the show…just not me.  I mean, is this possible?  We can watch other stuff, too.  I’ll sit through Star Trek, or something…shit.  I like to watch this when I want to turn my brain off and don’t need to focus on things like plot or characters for too long…plus it’s cute.  I like cute things.  So sue me.  One of my goals in life is to watch every Pokemon episode ever made, but seeing as I have the first three seasons and I’ve only watched 13 episodes in the course of about six months…I guess I’m not doing too well.  I actually remembered one of these episodes from when I was a kid, the one where the gang goes to that weird scientist’s house who is trapped in some kind of extinct pokemon shell…let’s just say this anime does not age well, even with the nostalgia factor.

Attack on Titan – Episode 21 Attack on Titan Cover

Um….the few words I have to say about this episode can pretty much be summed up with the following: what in the actual fuck just happened???  Really?  REALLY?  After last week when I said I didn’t want anyone else to die…and what did they do?  PRACTICALLY EVERYBODY DIES.  I can’t handle Eren getting eaten one more freaking time.  Leave this poor dude alone.  I can’t take Misaki breaking the hell down because she watched the love of her life get chomped on by that bitchy blonde titan.  I just…ugh.  What are they going to do to wrap this up?  I’m so into this show, and it hurts.  I want to marathon it, but I can’t wait that long.  What are you doing to me, Attack on Titan?  Just sit down for a second, and stop being so awesome.

Watamote – Episode 4 Watamote Cover

For some reason, I forgot where I was in this show, and since MAL was down, I accidentally rewatched episode 3…but I got 4 in there, so I guess it wasn’t a total wash.  I now understand what people were saying at the beginning of this series about the cringe factor.  It’s becoming really difficult to watch.  Like, I just want to see this girl make a friend so badly, and she’s so awkward that she just…can’t.  I feel bad for the one friend she has because she’s put in these awkward situations like being forced to go with to buy underwear.  Just…man.  Someone throw this girl a bone.

Another – Episodes 9-12 and Flash Video (Completed!) Another Cover

Here’s where the fucked up shows begin.  I really wanted to like this.  I really did.  And if it were for the fucked up factor alone, I would have.  But, I tried to get a plot out of this.  I tried to figure out some motivation for the characters’ actions.  Hell, I tried to remember the names of the characters…and I’ve got nothing.  The last time I watched this, I made a mental note that I would have to re-watch it just because I had no idea what was going on.  However, I watched it all the way through to the end and actually paid attention.  They explained the entire backstory and the plot.  I still couldn’t get it.  The last few episodes just became this ridiculous, giant bloodbath, and while that’s all well and good in slasher films that don’t even claim to have a plot, I just found the whole thing lacking here.  If this show had not tried to be some kind of psychological mystery horror show, and instead was just some kind of hack and slash anime, I could have gotten behind it more.  Watch the death scenes on youtube, if that’s your thing.  Don’t bother with the rest of this show, as it doesn’t bother with the viewer…so why should you put out the effort to care?  Also, the little bonus episode was pointless.  Don’t even bother watching it if you bought the DVD set.  I ranked this 7/10 on MAL for the fucked up death scenes…now that I think about it, I should have gone down another point, but the dub was good, so I’ll stick by this ranking.

Haganai – Episodes 8-9 Haganai Cover

Unfortunately, this show is turning into what I hoped it wouldn’t: a gigantic fanservice mess.  I did actually laugh out loud at one point, but that was completely the blonde girl’s fault.  I think she said something like, “What a shitty game!” and I just lost it.  But the fake dating sims are becoming the best part about this series…and that’s pretty sad.  Come on, Haganai, get better.  This is why you don’t have many friends.

Danganronpa: The Animation – Episode 10 Danganronpa Cover

Really?  This is a reality show?  I mean…I should have seen it coming.  That makes pretty much all the plot twists plausible.  But I don’t like it.  It feels like a cop out to me to say, well, this whole high school is just a television show.  However, it does give some credibility to my hypothesis that everyone is still alive after they “die.”  And did you see the ending credits?  All the characters were in the shot now.  It didn’t matter if they were dead or alive, they were in that shot.  I hope it wasn’t just a mistake or the animators being lazy…I hope that means I’m right.  There won’t be any more deaths, but the plot is going to wrap up in the next few episodes…I just want to know what’s actually happening already.

The Future Diary – Episodes 2-10 Future Diary Cover

Here we go, guys, this is the fucked up show I’m currently obsessed with.  My limited edition boxed set shipped early, so I pretty much marathoned most of part one on Saturday.  But, first, can I just say, the limited edition bonus item…valentines?  Seriously?  I couldn’t get a keychain or something?  Or maybe a box where the corner wasn’t all fucked up?  Anyway, this show is gold.  It’s so messed up.  Yuki is not as worthless as I pegged him to be in the first episode, and Yuno…holy crap.  This girl is psychotic.  I pretty much love her.  She loves Yuki so much that she literally kills for him.  And he’s so disgusted by it, but he feels like he has to use her to stay alive, but then maybe, just maybe, he has some kind of feelings for her…man.  You know how I liked Sword Art Online because of the romance?  Well, this is pretty much the antithesis of that, but it’s really freaking epic.  Also, the dub is awesome.  I love Ian Sinclair.  He plays a weird character called The 12th, and I heard him speak and was like, “Excalibur from Soul Eater!  He’s going to California!”  It was so great.  The girl who plays The 4th, she was also Ringo from Penguindrum, so clearly, she’s a pro at playing these fucked up characters.  I love, love, love this show.  I just am really broke and can’t afford to buy part two right now, so I’m hoping it’s up on the Funimation Channel by the time I finish with the set.  Come on, guys, throw me a bone here, I stood by you through all that Roku downtime…

Best of the Week:

Love it or Leave it: Watamote, Pokemon, The Wallflower

Hope it Gets Better: Haganai, Another

I forgot to mention this at the beginning, but this post has a prize inside!  Please enjoy this crunchyroll guest pass on me:

See you next week!

Anime Mondays #27 (Summer 2013 First Impressions!)

Here’s your spoilers: this post has a prize inside like the cereal box.  Just scroll down to the bottom if you want to claim it first.

Now that that’s out of the way, this week, I took some time out to watch first episodes of a lot (for me, anyway) of the shows that are currently airing this season in Japan.  Please be warned that I HATE watching anime weekly (case in point, I’ve binge watched over half of Orange is the New Black on Netflix since Friday — and I am starting to pre-write this post on Saturday) and I don’t know if I will continue to write about each show on a weekly basis.  I also haven’t started a couple I was really looking forward to watching and…I have no idea why.  Apparently, I’d rather write about some random shit I found on Crunchyroll by scrolling backwards through the simulcast list.  Let’s get this party started.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Naruto – Episode 1 Naruto cover

I’m painfully aware that this is not new.  In fact, I don’t know why I even started this, seeing as it’s 220 episodes for this series alone, not counting spin-offs, and everyone either talks about how terrible it is or how ridiculously in love with it they are.  But it was cheap on amazon.  And I’m trying to find a show that will fill the void left in my heart by the ending of Soul Eater.  This show is not going to be it, but now I’m compelled to finish it because I started it.  Naruto is about some kid who wants to be a ninja, but sucks at it.  However, he doesn’t really suck at it, he’s just got these powers locked up inside of him.  The first episode didn’t really do much except for try to prove how much of a bad ass this kid would be, but I’m not really buying it.  I’m sure it’ll improve as it goes on (after all, it has 200+ episodes to convince me), but for now, after one episode, I turned it off and continued the Smallville marathon I’m trying to complete before Comicon in August.  I’m halfway through season 2.  I don’t know if I’m gonna make it.

Watamote – Episode 1 Watamote Cover

The full title of this show is really long in both Japanese and English and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense either way, so let’s just go with Watamote.  So there’s this girl, and all she wants is to be popular, especially with boys.  However, she’s a giant weirdo.  Like…seriously.  There’s no other way to describe her.  She’s even worse that the protagonist from The World God Only Knows.  Like, that guy’s a douchebag, and this girl isn’t, but she just…wants to conform.  She makes facebook duck faces and puts her hair in pigtails and tries to give herself an extreme makeover to fit in with the other kids at school, and completely and utterly fails.  It’s funny, but it’s like…I want to give her a giant hug and cry my eyes out for her.  She reminds me more of Konata from Lucky Star than anyone else for some reason I can’t quite put my finger on.  Maybe it’s the art style.  This poor girl has giant bags underneath her eyes, and if she Google searches all this crap about making friends and being cute, she should probably start with a makeup blog and learn about concealer first.  Just sayin’.  I like this show, though.  I don’t know if I’ll continue it weekly, but I’ll definitely finish it sooner rather than later.  You can stream it on Crunchyroll if you want to check it out.

Blood Lad – Episode 1 Blood Lad Cover

Okay, so in the first three minutes of this show, I got a complete Soul Eater vibe.  Like, yes!  This could be it!  This could fill the void left behind by my beloved Death the Kid.  Plus, I love vampire anime.  Don’t judge me.  At least I don’t love Twilight.  Anyway, this vampire (who is obsessed with Japanese otaku crap) is the boss of one territory in the demon world, and a human girl mysteriously comes to his world.  He, of course, goes batshit on her, talking about junk like Final Fantasy, and I laughed so hard I almost spit out my Diet Coke.  However, shit hits the fan when she ends up dead and becomes a ghost.  Our good vampire friend claims to not be that interested in her anymore, but he makes it his mission to get her soul back into her body and revive her.  Um…okay.  This series is only ten episodes, so I really don’t know how they’re going to cram what feels like a gigantic plot into this tiny series, but I’ll stick with it.  Even if Viz won’t release it on DVD until like 2015.  It’s definitely not going to be my new Soul Eater, but maybe it could be my new Vampire Knight.  You can check this out on Hulu/Hulu + if you don’t want to wait 13 years before it gets a dub.  Why you so slow, Viz Media?

High School DxD – Episode 1 High School DxD Cover

So, I know this isn’t new either.  But the Funimation Roku Channel had two episodes of the dub up, so I gave it a shot.  And I’ve said it way more than once, but I’ll say it again: why does Japan ruin perfectly good concepts for shows with a shit ton of fanservice???  And it’s so much more than that here, it’s like full out cartoon nudity.  Yuck.  The dub is actually hysterical with all its boob references, even if I think I heard a “hells yeah!” in there somewhere.  But, Jesus Christ, I’d much rather see an edited version of the animation.  Sadly, the plot seems really interesting: these girls are all devils and this loser guy keeps getting killed for some reason yet to be explained, but the girls keep bringing him back to life.  I don’t know, I’m all for the occult stuff.  But I just…can’t.  If they start busting out some bananas for no reason Girls Bravo-style, I’m out.

Fantasista Doll – Episode 1 Fantasista Doll Cover

Card Captor Sakura meets Magic: the Gathering?  I don’t know, guys.  I know this was the first episode, but the plot of this show was just not explained well enough for me to want to keep watching.  Our main girl is a card game prodigy, and some freak slips a cell phone with a card reader into her bag on the train, and suddenly, she’s running for her life and being entered into a game where she controls these dolls through cards…I just don’t get it.  And they’re all bitches, too.  There’s something bubbling under the surface here, and I don’t know what it is, but it’s not dark like Madoka or anything, so I really don’t care.  This is one of those shows that I’m going to put on the backburner for a month or so and hope it gets better before I eventually finish it.  If you want to try to figure it out, it’s on Crunchyroll.

Sunday Without God – Episode 1 Sunday Without God Cover

This was one of the shows I was most excited to check out, and the first episode was, in a word, disappointing.  From the preview, I was expecting something a lot darker, and there was too much comedy in here for my liking.  Like, I really wanted this gory murder mystery with zombies, and I got some little girl calling this creeper her dad and both of them making stupid jokes to each other.  I’m trying to fill my Higurashi void, and I just don’t think anything is going to do it for me until I cough up the money for the first Umineko set.  I already bought the second.  Don’t judge me.  Anyway, this show is about some little girl whose mom is dead and her dad is a deadbeat who is told he has to be the town’s gravekeeper.  Because, you know, God just gave up on this world and turns people into zombies after they die unless a gravekeeper buries them.  It should be really good and gothic, right?  So far, it’s not.  Crunchyroll has it up, but it’s not on my must watch list anymore.

Stella Women’s Academy High School Division Class C3 – Episode 1 Stella Cover

Damn, this anime has a gigantic title.  What is it with the long titles this season?  First impression?  Strawberry Panic meets K-On! meets Btooom!.  I know…that sounds really odd.  I was super excited in the first few minutes thinking that this would be a fucked up show about girls in boarding school.  Then our main girl finds a gun under her pillow, and I was like, “if this turns into some mech bullshit, I’m out.”  Luckily, there are no giant robots to be found.  Instead, Stella is about a club full of girls who like to play war games.  No real blood is shed, even though it’s weird to see a bunch of cute girls running around shooting air machine guns at each other.  I’m guessing this is like paintball without the paint?  It really wasn’t made that clear.  But they bribe the main girl into the club with cake.  The concept sounds odd, but it was kind of charming and amusing.  However, if they stop playing the war games like K-On! stopped showing the band, I’m out.  I’ll keep tabs on this one on Crunchyroll for the rest of the season.

Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist – Episode 1 Makai Ouji Cover

I was drawn in by the character styles for this show, but once I watched it, I found I wasn’t interested at all.  The animation is weird and looks almost unfinished?  I can’t quite put my finger on what I don’t like about this show, but I’m just not that into you, Makai Ouji.  It’s basically about this rich dude who loses all his money until he finds out he’s a descendent of King Solomon or something and all these devils need him to elect them to become king of the demons…it’s just strange.  And not good strange.  The bad guy was pretty cool, though.  I was digging him.  It was like a cosplay dream, especially with his purple ombre hair.  If I get desperate for something to watch on Crunchyroll, I might try this again, but don’t count on it for awhile.

Danganronpa: The Animation – Episode 1 Danganronpa Cover

I think I’ve found my weekly show for the season.  This shit is right up my alley.  First of all, it’s got the Battle Royale aspect, where 15 extraordinary high school students are trapped in a school, and then in order for them to get out, they have to commit a murder.  PERFECT.  Let’s all watch the shit go down.  Apparently, this is based on a game, which explains the atrocious art style, but even with all the ugly characters, I’m still going to eat this up.  The first episode just basically introduces everyone and the premise (the evil teddy bear who put them all in the school has done something to their friends/family members, which motivates everyone to get out instead of just staying at the school forever), and although the characters are all cookie cutter, I was still drawn to a couple (namely the fashionista and the the blond heir guy with glasses).  The main character is pretty worthless, but as with most anime, this is to be expected.  I cannot wait for the next episode, even if Funimation releases them almost a week behind when they actually come out.  I may have to sneak around for this show.

Best of the Week: Danganronpa, Watamote, Stella Women’s Academy

Love it or Leave it: Blood Lad, Naruto, High School DxD

Hope it Gets Better: Sunday Without God, Majai Ouji, Fantasista Doll

And now for your prize: a Crunchyroll guest pass!

Next week may be a postponement because I have friends coming in from out of town, but I’ll try to get something up, even if I’m late.  What do you think of the new summer shows?  Is there something I’m missing?  Don’t say Free!.  I’m going to get to it…hold your half-naked horses.
