Anime Mondays #58

I’m doing my recap a little earlier than usual this week as Sunday officially starts “wedding season,” and it’s bridal showers, bachelorette/bachelor parties and days where people proclaim their love through the end of July.  I’ve never purchased so much Tupperware in my life.  Anyway, along with the shows this week, I watched this Japanese movie called Last Quarter, which is a manga adaptation from my beloved Ai Yazawa that never was translated into English.  I don’t watch a lot of live action Japanese movies (unless they are based off an anime I like, hi, I watched BOTH Nana movies), but this one was really good.  It was shot beautifully.  The lighting, the costumes and the sets just blew me away.  The acting was pretty sub-par, but I wasn’t expecting any Oscar-caliber performances, but it was just so pretty.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Monster Rancher – Episodes 1-2 Monster Rancher Cover

So…Right Stuf was having a Discotek sale, and for some reason, I felt compelled to start collecting this series.  Yes, another Pokemon rip-off.  No, it’s not very good.  I never watched this when it was on tv (I am guessing it was, since it’s long and has an English dub…), and I have no emotional, nostalgic attachments to it, so I’ll just tell it like it is: this show is straight up bad and boring.  Some kid gets sucked into a video game.  He’s trying to fight some bad guy.  That’s about all I got out of it.  I’ll be honest, I put this in the player when I wanted to take a nap, and it did not disappoint, as I only stayed conscious for two episodes.  This is going to go immediately to the back burner.

Naruto – Episodes 107-114 Naruto cover

Shit. Just. Fucking. Got. Real.  This is not the first time I’ll say that this week (spoiler~).  Something happened in this group of episodes, where the characters all seem to have magically aged.  I don’t know how much time is supposed to have passed between the start of the series and the halfway point, but all of the ninja kids seem to be more mature now.  First of all, Sasuke has officially peaced out and left the Leaf Village.  He’s a dumbass for trying to get revenge rather than stay with his ninja group, but this aside, I have a rather shocking confession to make.  Are you ready?  I didn’t believe this happened myself.  I actually, straight up cried during an episode and felt empathy towards Sakura.  Yeah, you heard me.  Worthless Sakura.  If you’ve seen the show, I’m sure you know the episode.  If you haven’t, then, well…spoilers.  Sakura is bawling and confessing her love to Sasuke, begging him to stay with her or let her come with him.  My heart broke (this is also not the first time this happened this week).  I must be having some major girl moments or something because I felt her compassion so hard.  Dear God, I cried during a Naruto episode, what is wrong with me??  I guess I could finally relate to something in this series.  Especially since Sasuke pretty much blows her off.  AND THEN KNOCKS HER OUT.  Asshole.  In other news, Shikimaru is a BAMF and the Choji episodes…I can’t.  I am really hoping that those endings were not cut and dry.  God, please.  I’ll start bawling again.

Paradise Kiss – Episodes 5-12 (Completed!) Paradise Kiss cover

Speaking of bawling…Christ.  I sobbed at the end of every single episode of this series.  I think this is a new record for me.  And I loved (almost) every second.  However, let me tell you, that ending…I think I stared at the DVD menu for a good five minutes after it was over just thinking about how broken my heart was.  I want more of this.  😦  I know, there is no more, and the story really ended in a complete way, but, damn.  It’s not like Nana, where when the anime ends, I can just go read the manga (I haven’t yet, don’t tell me what happens), I’m pretty sure this is it.  And it was SO GOOD.  I haven’t felt this invested in a group of characters in a long, long time.  I liked every single one.  And Caroline and George…ugh.  My stomach dropped so many times for them.  If you are a fool for shoujo romance anime like I am, stop everything you are doing and track down Paradise Kiss.  I do not regret a single cent of the $72 I spent purchasing this.  Even if the dub sucked and I watched the whole thing subtitled.  I think this just made my top ten anime of all time list.  Why is Ai Yazawa so perfect?  I rated this 9/10 on MAL, the point taken off for the bits of ‘comedic’ styling and my broken heart.

Code Geass – Episodes 18-25 (Completed!) Code Geass Cover

Shit. Just. Fucking. Got. Real. Part 2.  Unfortunately, it took 21 episodes for shit to get real in Code Geass, and then it just hit the fucking fan.  Episode 22.  Oh my goodness.  I can’t even.  Like, the whole series just got thrown on its head in that one episode, and for the rest of it, I was HOOKED.  Like, I was watching it just to kill time while I was painting my nails after work, and then all of a sudden, I was foregoing sleep to watch it, IT WAS THAT GOOD.  But the cliffhanger ending…fuck you, anime, fuck you.  I did not want to watch season 2 of this.  In fact, until episode 22, I was just going to finish this first season and then let it go, never to have a Geass cross my anime list again.  But no.  Now I have to find out what happens.  This is worse than the goddamned Attack on Titan cliffhangers.  Jesus.  I rated this 5/10 on MAL because even if it got really great, I had to suffer through 21 episodes of crap to get there and that shit is unacceptable.

Little Busters – Episodes 1-2 Little Busters Cover

I honestly thought I had started watching this anime when I purchased it (the only reason I did was because I got it SUPER cheap for a Sentai blu-ray), but, as it turns out, I had tried, but had fallen asleep through the first episode.  Yeah…clearly, I only got through two of them.  I can’t tell you what, if anything, this show is about, other than it’s based on a Key visual novel, which I did not know.  But as soon as I started to get bored, I realized, it’s by the same people who made Clannad, and then it all made sense.  PS: if you don’t follow my post tags, ‘I hate Clannad‘ is one that’s used often.  The dub is atrocious.  Even my precious Brittany Karbowski can’t save this crap, and Greg Ayres is hideously miscast.  I fell asleep through the sub, so there’s that.  No, I don’t have narcolepsy like the main character does, but I guess that’s the selling point of this series, that some dude has narcolepsy and nobody liked him except this group of childhood friends.  Now they’re older and are going to be split up soon, hence a push to “make the most of their youth,” whatever that means.  Apparently, it’s something about baseball.  But this is not a sports anime.  Off to the pile of no return you go, Little Busters.  I’ll see you again when I am really, really bored.

Soul Eater Not! – Episode 3 Soul Eater Not Cover

I hate to admit that this show is starting to grow on me.  I actually really enjoyed this episode, and it didn’t have any cameos at all.  Maybe it was because it focused on one of the side characters and not the main ones, but it was cute.  Anya is starting to become likable.  I think I’m losing my marbles.  But the “witch” of the girls’ dorm is such a great character.  I hope they flesh her out even more.

Akuma no Riddle – Episode 4 Akuma no Riddle Cover

Yup, I still love this show.  For a yuri show, it’s not very yuri-focused, and I can dig that.  There’s no weirdo Strawberry Panic bathtub scenes…yet, anyway.  This episode focuses on the smart girl, who can draw diagrams and make bombs as well as fuck ups.  She doesn’t even want to be an assassin, but she doesn’t want to fail at it, either.  Shit, maybe she should have just gone into the armed forces or something and made weapons.  She could have avoided all of this mess.  Probably my least favorite episode so far, but it was by no means a bad one.  I can’t wait until the girl with the short red hair gets featured.  She had a little cameo in this episode, but I want to know the story.  Hurry up, Akuma no Riddle.  This is by far my favorite show of the season.

Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (Completed!) Naruto Movie 1 Cover

The best part about this movie was that I didn’t have to purchase it, and I could watch it dubbed for free on Amazon Prime.  Seriously…the best part.  If I would have spent money on this, I would have been sad.  Even my OCD completest nature is not going to force me into buying this piece of crap.  It’s a filler movie, another stupid ninja mission, but the animation looks a lot nicer.  However, once again, I’m forced to ask myself what the hell time period this anime is supposed to take place in because he’s a ninja but Naruto is going to the movies…I don’t get it.   I thought ninjas were ancient warriors.  Anyway, the plot is dumb, the main heroine is a complete bitch, and I was just glad when it was over.  Don’t waste your time on this unless your OCD is bugging you like mine was.  You must watch this after episode 101 of the anime, though, just throwing that out there, as I had to google when to watch the movies about five times because I kept forgetting.  I rated this 5/10 on MAL, and that’s being generous.

Here’s the count: currently watching 239 shows (sad that I picked up two crappy ones) and have completed 23 shows this year!  Nothing in my backlog is really jumping out at me to watch right now to tease you for next week.  All my anime rental dvds have been returned (sidenote: why is it taking so long to have them marked as received? :/ and no, this is not Netflix, but I’m used to a one week turnaround time, and this has been almost three for one of my discs…), I don’t feel like starting anything new…I did get Hellsing recommended to me to finish, and I’m almost halfway through it, so maybe I’ll knock it out.  Is this a burn out?  Is this “the void” left by Paradise Kiss???  My heart…it still breaks.

Anime Mondays #27 (Summer 2013 First Impressions!)

Here’s your spoilers: this post has a prize inside like the cereal box.  Just scroll down to the bottom if you want to claim it first.

Now that that’s out of the way, this week, I took some time out to watch first episodes of a lot (for me, anyway) of the shows that are currently airing this season in Japan.  Please be warned that I HATE watching anime weekly (case in point, I’ve binge watched over half of Orange is the New Black on Netflix since Friday — and I am starting to pre-write this post on Saturday) and I don’t know if I will continue to write about each show on a weekly basis.  I also haven’t started a couple I was really looking forward to watching and…I have no idea why.  Apparently, I’d rather write about some random shit I found on Crunchyroll by scrolling backwards through the simulcast list.  Let’s get this party started.

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers up to the episodes listed!

Naruto – Episode 1 Naruto cover

I’m painfully aware that this is not new.  In fact, I don’t know why I even started this, seeing as it’s 220 episodes for this series alone, not counting spin-offs, and everyone either talks about how terrible it is or how ridiculously in love with it they are.  But it was cheap on amazon.  And I’m trying to find a show that will fill the void left in my heart by the ending of Soul Eater.  This show is not going to be it, but now I’m compelled to finish it because I started it.  Naruto is about some kid who wants to be a ninja, but sucks at it.  However, he doesn’t really suck at it, he’s just got these powers locked up inside of him.  The first episode didn’t really do much except for try to prove how much of a bad ass this kid would be, but I’m not really buying it.  I’m sure it’ll improve as it goes on (after all, it has 200+ episodes to convince me), but for now, after one episode, I turned it off and continued the Smallville marathon I’m trying to complete before Comicon in August.  I’m halfway through season 2.  I don’t know if I’m gonna make it.

Watamote – Episode 1 Watamote Cover

The full title of this show is really long in both Japanese and English and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense either way, so let’s just go with Watamote.  So there’s this girl, and all she wants is to be popular, especially with boys.  However, she’s a giant weirdo.  Like…seriously.  There’s no other way to describe her.  She’s even worse that the protagonist from The World God Only Knows.  Like, that guy’s a douchebag, and this girl isn’t, but she just…wants to conform.  She makes facebook duck faces and puts her hair in pigtails and tries to give herself an extreme makeover to fit in with the other kids at school, and completely and utterly fails.  It’s funny, but it’s like…I want to give her a giant hug and cry my eyes out for her.  She reminds me more of Konata from Lucky Star than anyone else for some reason I can’t quite put my finger on.  Maybe it’s the art style.  This poor girl has giant bags underneath her eyes, and if she Google searches all this crap about making friends and being cute, she should probably start with a makeup blog and learn about concealer first.  Just sayin’.  I like this show, though.  I don’t know if I’ll continue it weekly, but I’ll definitely finish it sooner rather than later.  You can stream it on Crunchyroll if you want to check it out.

Blood Lad – Episode 1 Blood Lad Cover

Okay, so in the first three minutes of this show, I got a complete Soul Eater vibe.  Like, yes!  This could be it!  This could fill the void left behind by my beloved Death the Kid.  Plus, I love vampire anime.  Don’t judge me.  At least I don’t love Twilight.  Anyway, this vampire (who is obsessed with Japanese otaku crap) is the boss of one territory in the demon world, and a human girl mysteriously comes to his world.  He, of course, goes batshit on her, talking about junk like Final Fantasy, and I laughed so hard I almost spit out my Diet Coke.  However, shit hits the fan when she ends up dead and becomes a ghost.  Our good vampire friend claims to not be that interested in her anymore, but he makes it his mission to get her soul back into her body and revive her.  Um…okay.  This series is only ten episodes, so I really don’t know how they’re going to cram what feels like a gigantic plot into this tiny series, but I’ll stick with it.  Even if Viz won’t release it on DVD until like 2015.  It’s definitely not going to be my new Soul Eater, but maybe it could be my new Vampire Knight.  You can check this out on Hulu/Hulu + if you don’t want to wait 13 years before it gets a dub.  Why you so slow, Viz Media?

High School DxD – Episode 1 High School DxD Cover

So, I know this isn’t new either.  But the Funimation Roku Channel had two episodes of the dub up, so I gave it a shot.  And I’ve said it way more than once, but I’ll say it again: why does Japan ruin perfectly good concepts for shows with a shit ton of fanservice???  And it’s so much more than that here, it’s like full out cartoon nudity.  Yuck.  The dub is actually hysterical with all its boob references, even if I think I heard a “hells yeah!” in there somewhere.  But, Jesus Christ, I’d much rather see an edited version of the animation.  Sadly, the plot seems really interesting: these girls are all devils and this loser guy keeps getting killed for some reason yet to be explained, but the girls keep bringing him back to life.  I don’t know, I’m all for the occult stuff.  But I just…can’t.  If they start busting out some bananas for no reason Girls Bravo-style, I’m out.

Fantasista Doll – Episode 1 Fantasista Doll Cover

Card Captor Sakura meets Magic: the Gathering?  I don’t know, guys.  I know this was the first episode, but the plot of this show was just not explained well enough for me to want to keep watching.  Our main girl is a card game prodigy, and some freak slips a cell phone with a card reader into her bag on the train, and suddenly, she’s running for her life and being entered into a game where she controls these dolls through cards…I just don’t get it.  And they’re all bitches, too.  There’s something bubbling under the surface here, and I don’t know what it is, but it’s not dark like Madoka or anything, so I really don’t care.  This is one of those shows that I’m going to put on the backburner for a month or so and hope it gets better before I eventually finish it.  If you want to try to figure it out, it’s on Crunchyroll.

Sunday Without God – Episode 1 Sunday Without God Cover

This was one of the shows I was most excited to check out, and the first episode was, in a word, disappointing.  From the preview, I was expecting something a lot darker, and there was too much comedy in here for my liking.  Like, I really wanted this gory murder mystery with zombies, and I got some little girl calling this creeper her dad and both of them making stupid jokes to each other.  I’m trying to fill my Higurashi void, and I just don’t think anything is going to do it for me until I cough up the money for the first Umineko set.  I already bought the second.  Don’t judge me.  Anyway, this show is about some little girl whose mom is dead and her dad is a deadbeat who is told he has to be the town’s gravekeeper.  Because, you know, God just gave up on this world and turns people into zombies after they die unless a gravekeeper buries them.  It should be really good and gothic, right?  So far, it’s not.  Crunchyroll has it up, but it’s not on my must watch list anymore.

Stella Women’s Academy High School Division Class C3 – Episode 1 Stella Cover

Damn, this anime has a gigantic title.  What is it with the long titles this season?  First impression?  Strawberry Panic meets K-On! meets Btooom!.  I know…that sounds really odd.  I was super excited in the first few minutes thinking that this would be a fucked up show about girls in boarding school.  Then our main girl finds a gun under her pillow, and I was like, “if this turns into some mech bullshit, I’m out.”  Luckily, there are no giant robots to be found.  Instead, Stella is about a club full of girls who like to play war games.  No real blood is shed, even though it’s weird to see a bunch of cute girls running around shooting air machine guns at each other.  I’m guessing this is like paintball without the paint?  It really wasn’t made that clear.  But they bribe the main girl into the club with cake.  The concept sounds odd, but it was kind of charming and amusing.  However, if they stop playing the war games like K-On! stopped showing the band, I’m out.  I’ll keep tabs on this one on Crunchyroll for the rest of the season.

Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist – Episode 1 Makai Ouji Cover

I was drawn in by the character styles for this show, but once I watched it, I found I wasn’t interested at all.  The animation is weird and looks almost unfinished?  I can’t quite put my finger on what I don’t like about this show, but I’m just not that into you, Makai Ouji.  It’s basically about this rich dude who loses all his money until he finds out he’s a descendent of King Solomon or something and all these devils need him to elect them to become king of the demons…it’s just strange.  And not good strange.  The bad guy was pretty cool, though.  I was digging him.  It was like a cosplay dream, especially with his purple ombre hair.  If I get desperate for something to watch on Crunchyroll, I might try this again, but don’t count on it for awhile.

Danganronpa: The Animation – Episode 1 Danganronpa Cover

I think I’ve found my weekly show for the season.  This shit is right up my alley.  First of all, it’s got the Battle Royale aspect, where 15 extraordinary high school students are trapped in a school, and then in order for them to get out, they have to commit a murder.  PERFECT.  Let’s all watch the shit go down.  Apparently, this is based on a game, which explains the atrocious art style, but even with all the ugly characters, I’m still going to eat this up.  The first episode just basically introduces everyone and the premise (the evil teddy bear who put them all in the school has done something to their friends/family members, which motivates everyone to get out instead of just staying at the school forever), and although the characters are all cookie cutter, I was still drawn to a couple (namely the fashionista and the the blond heir guy with glasses).  The main character is pretty worthless, but as with most anime, this is to be expected.  I cannot wait for the next episode, even if Funimation releases them almost a week behind when they actually come out.  I may have to sneak around for this show.

Best of the Week: Danganronpa, Watamote, Stella Women’s Academy

Love it or Leave it: Blood Lad, Naruto, High School DxD

Hope it Gets Better: Sunday Without God, Majai Ouji, Fantasista Doll

And now for your prize: a Crunchyroll guest pass!

Next week may be a postponement because I have friends coming in from out of town, but I’ll try to get something up, even if I’m late.  What do you think of the new summer shows?  Is there something I’m missing?  Don’t say Free!.  I’m going to get to it…hold your half-naked horses.

Anime Mondays #12

Welcome to this week’s double post of doom!  Okay, so it’s not really doom-like at all, I have a couple new shows in here, a conclusion, some regulars…it’s been a busy week in Glitterbots Grove.  Yes, I just made my screen name into a fictional place.  Alliteration for the win.  Hey Monday!

All images are from MAL, and there are spoilers below up to the episode numbers listed!

Chihayafuru 2 – Episodes 7-8 Chihayafuru 2 Cover

How does this show keep getting better and better?  Honestly.  Somebody answer me.  This is the only show of the new anime season I’ve constantly kept up with, and for good reason: it’s fantastic.  Chihaya and friends go from the Tokyo regional karuta tournament immediately to the national tournament.  Look, mom, no filler!  Thankfully, everything seems to be coming up roses for the team as they win their first round match against a group of “foreigners.”  How cute was it when Chihaya was writing on the board in English???  Ugh, she loves karuta.  She loves when other people love the game just as much as she does.  CHIHAYA JUST LOVES EVERYTHING.  Oh, and can we talk about Arata coming to surprise her and Taichi to watch the team matches?  But that Queen…something is brewing here, and I don’t know what it is.  Bitch needs to leave the three amigos alone so they can get some BFF time in.  I don’t really like where some of this is going…you know…this Chihaya/Arata relationship that might be slipping through the cracks (Chihaya/Taichi forever!~), but I’m interested to see where this goes.  Watching this one week at a time is TORTURE for me, especially since I marathoned most of season one in a couple days, but I’m sticking it out.  Friday afternoons when I get off work are my favorite times.

GetBackers – Episodes 1-5 GetBackers Cover

So, this is what came from my anime rental service lately (that I actually chose to watch, hello, Gintama DVD that’s been sitting here since October, ugh).  Firstly, this dub is atrocious.  I don’t know if it’s my crappy television, or if my DVD player is on the fritz, or what, but the audio mix on the English version is absolutely horrible.  Most of the first episode sounded like the characters were either underwater, trapped in a tunnel, or echoing their faces off.  Add to this that one of the main guys is voiced by the dude who did Kenshin (and I watched all 90+ episodes of that hot mess) and that the lead female is worse than Monica Rial on the screech scale, and I turned the subtitles on immediately.  It’s not that much better in Japanese, but the first four seconds of the theme song are extremely catchy (I love songs that start off with just a drum beat and then add a vocal).  Of course, it goes downhill from there, but whatever.  GetBackers is one of those episodic, we-do-anything-for-money, long-running shonen shows, wow, just like Gintama that I keep putting off!  These two guys “get back” things people have lost or have gotten stolen.  The first two episodes are terrible, but, luckily, the next three are all connected in a series and the villains are pretty bad ass.  It’s sad that the girl who uses poisoned perfume as a weapon and Dr. Jackal, who has weapons INSIDE HIS BODY, are relegated to being a transport team instead of causing general debauchery, but I hope their tasks get more evil as the show progresses.  This show is like 50+ episodes long.  They have time.  As a sidenote, ADV really tried to give some good extras with their release, including voice actor interviews and commentaries, but they’ve got to be the most BORING interviews and commentaries I have ever heard.  The actors try too hard to be funny, or they’re just so wooden no one cares, and it just doesn’t work.  This show is going to be a chore to plow through, I can feel it already.

Lunar Legend Tsukihime – Episodes 1-4 Lunar Legend Tsukihime Cover

I don’t remember why I moved this anime up so high in my Netflix queue.  I think it was a prequel to something (post note: it’s by the same people who did Garden of Sinners, and now it all makes sense), but I can’t quite put my finger on it.  Anyway, this show has a premise to either be really fucked up (win!) or really boring (lose!).  The main dude can see strings of death, so he knows exactly where to chop the bad guys up into tiny, bloody pieces, even if they are monsters.  He has a pair of glasses that someone gave him when he was a child that effectively block his death-vision, and he, smartly, wears them all the time.  However, when he has to move in with his sister, weird shit starts happening.  He keeps having these weirdo flashbacks/visions of slicing some girl into ribbons, and then she magically appears right in front of him.  Turns out this girl is a vampire, and she needs him for….something.  Either I forgot, or it’s not exactly clear.  She tells him how his death-vision works and then he kills some monster for her.  Then, for some reason, she shows up like, in his bed and tries to chomp the shit out of him.  I love these mind fuck anime, but goddamn, I wish I could keep a plot straight.  Is it me, or is it the show?  I guess I’ll pay more attention to the next volume whenever it decides to show up at my house.

I My Me! Strawberry Eggs – Episodes 1-4 Strawberry Eggs Cover

Before I even talk about this show in particular, I’m going to pose a question: is it just me, or did Geneon license a bunch of anime that look exactly the same?  This show reminds me so much of about six shows I’ve gotten from those old RightStuf sales where you could get 25 DVDs for $100.  They all have similar art styles, similar harem plots and were all licensed by Geneon.  Ai Yori Ayoshi and some horrible show about maids come to mind immediately (I can’t remember the title, but it really wasn’t something to write home about), but I know there have been more.  Maybe ALL the anime made around this time period just reeks of plagiarism, but I digress.  Sidenote: what the shit with all these shows with the word “strawberry” in the title?  There are so many and I get them all confused, and there are NO STRAWBERRIES anywhere in the shows!  Seriously.  Where were the strawberries in Strawberry Panic?  Yeah, I sat through that one, too.  Okay, now onto the egg show.  This dude needs a gym teacher job and money so he can pay his rent.  However, the only school in the area that seems to be hiring gym teachers is one where they only hire female teachers.  So, instead of, I don’t know, commuting, this dude thinks it’s a smart idea to go all Rupaul on us and dress in drag so he can teach these kids how to vault over a horse in long, pleated skirts.  Um…now, I love me some “Drag Race,” but I don’t know about this anime.  To add insult to injury, he starts to fall in love with one of his students.  And now I am checked out for good.  I’ll still finish it because I’m pretty positive nothing will actually happen, but Jesus Christ, get a girlfriend your own age, already.  And throw some strawberries into this show so I can feel validated, thank you.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OVA) Episodes 6-7 Tenchi Muyo! Cover

Man, I have so much to say about this series, but almost all of it is nostalgic.  Tenchi Muyo! was one of the very first anime series I ever owned that was in Japanese with English subtitles.  I had this on VHS tape.  You know the ones that had one ova episode on a cassette and was still $30 apiece?  I have all of them.  I still have the posters and comment cards that came with them.  I remember the gigantic yellow subtitles all in caps.  I remember I made up my own words to the theme song.  I begged for new volumes from my parents for every birthday and Christmas until I had them all.  Anime is NOT a cheap hobby, friends.  I got a stuffed Ryo-Ohki for Christmas one year and I carried that thing around like a badge of honor.  I gladly explained to everyone what the hell a “cabbit” was and got funny looks when I imitated the meow, but I didn’t care.  I love, love, loved this show.  And honestly, I didn’t really get parts of it?  I just played it off that everyone ran around naked during the hot springs episode, and I wanted to be Ryoko because she was so bad ass, and I wanted to punch Ayeka in the face because she was a whiny, princess bitch.  I got my initiation into RightStuf by purchasing this show.  I went to my local comic shop to beg the dude to carry new volumes of this so I could buy it.  I’m sure he was like, what the fuck is a little girl doing watching this show about a lame dude surrounded by women, but I did not care.  Shit, I have a TV that only hooks up to a VCR in my basement that I watch when I’m on the treadmill, and I watch these tapes to time my workouts.  So, when I heard Funimation was re-releasing them in Blu-Ray, I had to have it.  I don’t care that the show’s not that great.  I don’t care that the plot is strung together at best.  I don’t care that Washu is a pervert and sticks her hand down Tenchi’s pants, and I don’t care that the longest OVA episode is filler.  I now own the entire Tenchi series (except for Tenchi Muyo GXP, which I watched and HATED) on DVD, including the Pretty Sammy stuff and the Sasami Magical Girls Club spin offs.  Like, Sailor Moon, however, I’m still in the process of watching it all.  Oh, but I’ll finish it, no matter if I still want to punch Ayeka in the face all these years later.  I just had to start with a massive re-watch back at the beginning, where the magic begins.  Sorry, I’m not sorry.

Baka and Test Summon the Beasts Season 2 – Episode 1 Baka and Test Season 2 Cover

Okay, I love the first season of this show.  I watched it in Japanese, laughed my ass off through every episode, and bought it when it came out on DVD, to which I laughed my ass off through every episode with the English dub.  I know that a lot of people pan this show, but I think it’s hysterical.  My favorite character is Hideyoshi, and goddamn, I don’t care how old the gag is, I crack up every time someone thinks he’s a girl.  However, when season 2 started the simulcast, I couldn’t get into it.  I literally fell asleep through the first episode each time I started it.  I just don’t like beach things, so sue me.  But, I bought this from the last Funimation RightStuf sale and have successfully stayed awake through episode 1.  Yahoo for school!  Yahoo for me!  The avatar fights are my favorite part, so they need to hurry and get back into the classroom.  When I want to watch something mindless, I can always turn to Baka and Test.  It’s golden.

Bleach – Episodes 21-24 Bleach Title

Netflix decided to send this my way and I devoured it as soon as it came in the mail.  I don’t know what it is, but I can get through a volume of Bleach faster than almost anything.  In this set of episodes, the gang jumped through that dimension door or whatever to go save Rukia.  Ichigo fights this giant and then a dude who rides a warthog…that’s about it.  Seriously, about nothing happens, and then the disc is OVER.  I don’t know how people watched this weekly.  I feel like I’m going to need about four more DVDs just to finish this boss battle.

White Album – Episodes 1-3 White Album Cover

This is what happened to me yesterday when I was surfing through the Seinen section on my Crunchyroll Roku Channel.  I was like, oh, White Album, maybe it’s a Beatles reference and is about music!  So, I turned it on.  And it is about music…sort of.  Basically this dude has a girlfriend he never sees because she’s trying to become an idol.  However, all these chicks are practically throwing themselves at him for no apparent reason (honestly, he’s like…super wooden).  It reminds me a lot of School Days (and I’m the only person in the universe who actually liked that anime, so shut up, it’s not a bad thing), and then I saw on MAL that it’s based on a game…great.  So this creeper really IS going to hook up with every girl with a pulse, fantastic.  I was only being slightly sarcastic with that statement.  One day, I will explain why I liked the most hated anime to ever exist, but today is not that day.  I will say that the characters in White Album are all sorts of fucked up, and I haven’t even begin to crack the surface on it, yet.  I just wish the male protagonist would be more interesting.  Maybe he is.  Maybe it’s coming.  Maybe there’s a nice boat.  We shall see….

And we have come to the end of another Anime Monday.  Next week, the post comes with a surprise inside…totally better than cereal, right?
